What do you think would be the differences in today's pop culture music?
Or would it not have made a difference?

Maybe he would have ended up old and fairly insignificant like Dylan. <_<

EC:

For sure Buddy would be old.....he'd be amost 68. IMHO, if he had lived, his amazing contributions to "modern" music as we know it would have continued for a few years, and then he would have settled into living his life and touring. Another "old" musician and fan ended up owning his entire musical catologue....Paul McCartney.

I would hardly call Bob Dylan insignificant though....at 63 he still puts on the hell of a show, and his music is still more covered than almost any other songwriter.

LL, yes perhaps "fairly insignificant" was used to loosely in the case of Bob Dylan. He had almost god-like reverence in the 60s. He doesn't get out much nowadays though.

It would be interesting to see how music would have evolved if the obvious ones like Hendrix, Joplin, Moon etc... had lived longer.

Dear EC:

Au contrare.....Dylan loves to tour. His tour schedule for 2004 includes over 80 gigs....including three in Toronto....but none in Montreal.

http://my.execpc.com/~billp61/dates.html (Scroll down to the bottom for tour sites....you'll see he is all over the globe).

If you ever get a chance to see Dylan live, do it! He still has the same rusty gear box voice, but what a performer, and what a band he has put together. My friend dragged me to one of his concerts a couple of years ago, and it turned out to be one of the best performances I've ever seen.

Woo-ee-oo I look just like Buddy Holly
Oh-oh, and you're Mary Tyler Moore
I don't care what they say about us anyway
I don't care 'bout that
I don't care 'bout that

Bang! Bang a knock on the door
Another big bang you're down on the floor
Oh no! Whatta we do
Don't look now but I lost my shoe
I can't run and I can't kick
What's a matter babe are you feelin' sick
What's a matter, what's a matter, what's a matter you?
What's a matter babe, are you feelin' blue? Oh-oh!

And that's for all all time
that's for all all time

ALL ALONG THE WATCHTOWER

"There must be some way out of here," said the joker to the thief,

"There's too much confusion, I can't get no relief.

Businessmen, they drink my wine, plowmen dig my earth,

None of them along the line know what any of it is worth."

"No reason to get excited," the thief, he kindly spoke,

"There are many here among us who feel that life is but a joke.

So let us not talk falsely now, the hour is getting late."

All along the watchtower, princes kept the view

While all the women came and went, barefoot servants, too.

Outside in the distance a wildcat did growl,

Two riders were approaching, the wind began to howl.

Funny thing LL

Was having a conversation with a musician tonight and they brought up the point you made of how often Dylan material got covered

It's a small world, but I still wouldn't want to have to paint it

For the record, I think Buddy Holly was incredible
If he were alive today - who knows

The day the music died

Good morning Vick!! I found this list of Dylan's top 10 most covered songs:

1. Blowin' In The Wind 375 versions

2. Don't Think Twice, It's All Right 217

3. I Shall Be Released 181

4. Mr. Tambourine Man 176

5. Like A Rolling Stone 172

6. Knockin' On Heaven's Door 150

7. All Along The Watchtower 144

8. It's All Over Now, Baby Blue 133

9. I'll Be Your Baby Tonight 121

10. Quinn The Eskimo (The Mighty Quinn) 118

Buddy Holly did contribute a LOT, and was by all accounts a great performer and the first real songwriter of any importance. The link to the article I posted earlier is good...I didn't know exactly how much Buddy Holly was an influence on Dylan, the Beatles, and everyone down the line, until I read it.
