View Full Version : How materialistic are you?

We're all materialists. There is no denying it.
But just how much of one are you?

Do you need to have all the best designer clothing, and drive the status symbol automobiles to impress others and yourself?

Or are you way off at the other end of the equation?

All I need is some tasty waves, cool buds and I'm fine...

I buy for myself, no one else. I couldn't care less if you're impressed by my $20 WalMart jeans or something I paid a lot of $$ for because I liked it and/or knew it would last :)

For the most part, I find the people who "dress to impress" are often dressing to cover other issues in their lives (small parts, maybe?).

I don't own a suit.

I don't own a Gucci anything.

I don't wear a watch.

I think I am better off than most.

:-)

I wear shorts or jeans 95% of the time
I have had the same black tennis shoes going on 10 years....
I drive a pontiac...
I hate watches, rings, any of that bling....

My kid keeps threatening me with the 'queer eye' treatment...

ya.. I'm a playa... ;-)

I know it will come as a shock toa few who do not know me that well, but material things do not mean to much to me. I certainly do not wear, drive, do things to impress other people.

The important things money cannot buy....

However, money does make life easier.

The number one thing money does for me is gives me more time. Time is the most valueable thing out there.

Sort of, i just want to have some nice things now and money to do fun stuff mostly reinvesting it though, but my long term goals are half materialistic, half like the american family dream kinda thing.

I want a bigass house, a diablo a rolex a benz and several more gucci wallets, this way if i end up with a bitch wife and a loser family, at least i'll have my flashy stuff to make me happy. :)

Stuff cannot make you happy.... especially long term.

Stuff eventually becomes shit over time.

Family and friends at the end of the day is all we have.

If you think owning shit ( I mean stuff) will make you happy, then you are in for a long miserable life.

50% might be the average, but not in my family.

I was raised a little differently. I imagine the 50% of the population who gets the divorces are the ones who think they can find happiness in material objects.

These are the people who are always searching for the next thing - and many times that includes the next girl/guy.

Happiness is a mindeset, it is a matter of attitude that is one of the few things in life one can ALWAYS control.

Grogan, I think you need to send me a Guicci wallet now for dispensing all these pearls!

I'm not materialistic at all. When my wife and I were still together she often reminded me that if it wasn't for her wanting to get nice things and decorating the house I would have still been perfectly happy sleeping on a couch size futon for a bed that I did when I was in college. :P

Outside of work I have been and always will be a jeans and t-shirt kinda guy. Wife tried for years to get me to wear polos and such and I just didn't like to and kept with my jeans and t-shirt wardrobe.

Now, work was a different story. When I worked in the casino biz as a floorperson and pit boss I always made sure I had a very nice suit and tie. I took that as a necessity to my job that I enjoyed. Liked shopping for ties and I had a TON of endangered species ties that I wore that always was very good at breaking the ice with customers. Always had to be a bit diferent though with my ties and footwear as I often wore very nice cowboy boots with my suits and people loved both the ties and boots. :okthumb:

I dont consider myself terribly materialistic, but I do confess to liking toys, some of which are pricey.

Pick a Beatles song ....

"All You Need is Love" or "Money"?

... Notice the Beatles covered their bases and did both. :D

I like nice things but I'm not flamboyant about my appearance.

My watch is a Seiko and my clothes all have labels… most of which tell me what temperature to use when washing them…

My wife and son are what's important to me, not how I dress or what I drive…

:)
