He is doing AWESOME! It was written about a week after he got there (mail moves slow....) but said everything is good and he actually DOES love it. He said he's tired, not overly, but has lost some weight. He's trying to earn the Tomahawk or something where he gets an extra day of off base leave after graduation. He also said they had the best squadron on the base and he's been rarely yelled at. And he did admit to being homesick, but just a little. :awinky:

So....I'm going to stop worrying for a bit and be really, really proud :)

You know it :)

I suspect I will embarrassingly weepy eyed at graduation :awinky:

Edited to add: I'm VERY surprised about the fitness stuff. He had planned to do push ups, sit ups and run for at least a month before he left and NEVER did. If he gets the fitness award (Thunderbolt, not Tomahawk, hehehe), then he has Wig to thank for making him do physical labor. :okthumb:

I hit the jackpot today, he also just called :) Said the worst part is doing the same thing over and over again every day. :P

He's having problems with his "red line inspections" where his clothes in the drawers are buttoned right and have strings on them. IMHO, that seems pretty darned easy to fix, but apparently this is not the case with him. Unfortunately, if he keeps screwing that one thing up, he can be recycled and not graduate on schedule. I'm holding off on making plane reservations!

What kind of academy/school is he attending?

My roomate's boy is likely going to go to Project Challenge here in Phoenix as he can't seem to keep from being kicked out of every school imaginable. Project Challenge is a 5 month bootcamp environment with Real drill instructors from the Military and teachers/councellors specially trained for dealing with fucktards. The kids emerge from the program with a "class one", I believe it is called, GED which is supposed to be the equivalent of a HS diploma.

Glad to hear he's doing well. The physical fitness aspect of the USAF is rather easy compared to the other branches. For example their timed run is only 1.5 miles whereas the USMC is 3 miles.

And don't ,the chances of him being recycled are extremely low. I would be suprememly surprised if he got held back.

USAF :)

And yes, TE, I know the "Air Farce" physical requirements are a LOT lower than any other branch, but they HAVE upped them (apparently because they got tired of being made fun of :P ). They have a 2 mile run now that has to be done in 16.45 minutes. I don't think that's his problem though - it's the situps and pushups. I'm betting he's not done either before he went to Lackland.

Peaches,

Drills (in any branch) are akin to traffic cops, they can ALWAYS find something to 'gig' ya for...

On the inspections, sending him a roll of scotchtape (matte, not shiney) will be super helpful. Tape applied to bottoms/backs of things keeps them from shifting... Just make sure they can't see the tape and will go ok.

Thin cardboard strips (inch wide, 6 inches long) make good supporting forms when doing sock 'boats'.

A small stapler (like kids use in school) helps keep tshirt rolls tacked shut (just don't put staple where can see it).

Can also use small strips of tape on clothes rod to keep hangars proper distance apart (wrap NEATLY around rod on either side of where hangar goes to create a 'notch')...

If he's allowed to have a lighter, going over all seams w/ a flame will burn off the strings and reduce fraying.

On the buttons coming undone, again use stapler (or needle/thread) to 'cinch up' the button hole of any button he doesn't really use. Just put a small staple or few stitches right under the button and won't have to worry about them coming undone anymore.

For brass polishing, send him pair of cotton gloves (he can loan out the other glove).

A rag sprayed with unscented pledge in a ziplock bag or some of those 'dust magnet' mop covers for hardwood floors are good tools to have for quick dusting (and keeping it at bay).

Mailing him a package of postcards w/ stamps attached is helpful as it's much easier to jot down a note and drop in mailslot than it is to mess with envelopes/stamps/paper...

Hope these help... Tell him to hang in there... he's going to actually miss this time in his life a few years down the road... lol

Glad you heard from him, Peaches ... and I wouldn't worry too much about the fitness stuff. They have ways of encouraging him :D

Someone needs to learn about "Questions not to ask a Mom".

And just to clarify, he's doing fine on the physical part, this is going above and beyond the minimums to earn an award - and more importantly, another off base day pass during graduation weekend. :P

Glad that you've heard from him... I think that's one of the hardest things for "Mom" is just not knowing. He'll probably do just fine. When my hubby was in basic he always called telling me all the things he was doing wrong and everything the drill sgts said he would get kicked out for... he ended up getting his "ducks in a row" and graduated just fine.

I think the pressure and the worry over not getting it is part of the total package of preparing you for "whatever" after you graduate.

Good to hear he's doing well though! :okthumb:

Well, he didn't write either myself or GonZo....

Tell him to write us, we'll find out what's REALLY going on....
