View Full Version : 5 Favorite Movies

We might have been down this road in the past but ....
Since we've been kicking around viewing choices

Here goes

My favorite 5

Casablanca
The Wizard of Oz
Pulp Fiction
Silence of the Lambs
Beauty and the Beast

Only 1 made in the last 10 years and 2 others made in the last 15, none in this century

If someone gets the urge maybe we can boil down the offerings and come up with Oprano's top 50 movies

So what's your's?

vick, excellent idea for an O+ feature ;-)

I can never think of the movies quickly enough to make these lists but here are 5 movies I really really like - not going to commit to fave's! I try to watch things that relax me & have a positive vibe, am not big on violent, dramatic films - I like comedy - because life has enough seriousness!

Dogma
The Little Mermaid (more recently Finding Nemo)
Charlie's Angels
Gia
Flashdance

My list constantly changes...but 5 that are always in my top 5, 10, 15, etc.:

Glengarry Glen Ross
A Clockwork Orange
Texas Chainsaw Massacre
O Brother Where Art Thou (this has quickly become one of my favorites with repeat viewings)
Bad Taste

I'd have to try to fit The Exorcist in there somewhere too, but I've been enjoying the repeated viewings of OBWAT too much.....

I couldn't even *begin* to narrow down the movies I like into a favorite 50, much less a favorite 5.
However, Finding Nemo and Monsters Inc have been in the boys' "let's drive mom crazy playing this yet AGAIN" rotation this week. Even though I love both movies, every other day is a bit much.
At least today they added a Star Wars variant (the one where Yoda kicks ass).

If you want truly annoying for the parents and great for the kids, grab Leapfrog's The Letter Factory and The Word Factory (only about $9 each on DVD).

Itroduce your kids to low budget horor and sci-fi movies from the 50's and 60's. You'll get a nice change of pace and they'll discover movies that are fun and don't containa lot of profanity or graphic violence.
Best Buy has a ton of collections, usually 3-4 of these movies on single DVD for $8 as well as full colletions of 10 movies acorss 4-5 DVD's.

My kids have developed an appreciation for movies like "The Wasp Woman", "The Ape" and "The Indestructible Man". I also don't have to worry about having them cover their eyes during the "boobs and butts" moments like in more modern horror movies and there isn't the profanity or graphic violence and yet, as kids, they can have fun with these fairly harmless scary movies.

People ask why I let my kids watch a movie like "Killer Klowns From Outer Space" and I say the movie's violence is cartoonish and non-graphic, there is limited amounts of profanity, no nudity and it's just a lot of silly yet scary fun. Although I do get weird looks from some of the neighborhood moms whenmy kdids wanna play Killer Klowns and act like they are throwing acid cream pies at and shooting the friends with killer popcorn guns...hahahaha

Somehow the terms "horror movie" and "no graphic violence" don't mix. Can you tell I grew up in the 70's and 80's? :)

Silly funny scary is no problem (they handle "scary"), I just wouldn't want the butcher's knife - repeated hacking - maimed bloody corpse kinda stuff.
I was thinking of getting them MP's Quest for the Holy Grail. Much of it would go over their head but they'd still get a major kick out of it. (Not horror, I know, but a "classic" nonetheless.)

Still, we're talking 6 and 4 (on Sunday) yrs old here so pretty much anything is lost on them except for what's blatantly presented on-screen. But I'd much rather hear "I'm not dead yet!" and "I'll gnaw at yer ankles!" than the two of them role-playing Dori and Marlin. :headwall:
(A 4yr old boy trying to sound like Ellen Degeneres in a high falsetto has got to be one of the top 10 sounds guaranteed to set your nerves on edge...)

The Godfather
The Sting
Pulp Fiction
Aliens
The Road Warrior

Carrie

A few old fav's just off the top of my head

Flashdance
The Piano (not The Pianist)
Tuff Turf (OLD movie with a young James Spader)
Highlander
Resevoir Dogs (howeverthahell you spell that)
The Breakfast Club
The King and I
Desperado
Last of the Mohicans

More recent ones -
Seabiscuit (starts slow but is a fantastic movie)
Secondhand Lions
Underworld
Finding Nemo
Lord of the Rings (wow)
Harry Potter (all of 'em)
Matrix

Only movie that ever scared me - can't remember the name of it but it was the first one with the flying spheres that drilled into your head. (Sykk might know.) Phantasm might be the name? The sequels sucked though. The original Nightmare on Elm Street did a pretty good job too but I was too old by then for it to really 'scare' me.

Nearly anything with Harrison Ford, Sean Connery (except the Bond movies), Anthony Hopkins, John Malkovich, Kevin Spacey, Al Pacino, Robert DeNiro... and too many damn more to mention :awinky:

And just to shock Vick... I've never seen Casablanca.
Maybe next week we'll do a classic movie night and get that one and My Fair Lady (haven't seen it either).

there can't be a top 5 as fairly it would have to be top 10's in 5 different categories. but to humor you and the rest of you who have horrible tastes and are the reason garbage films are put out, here's "a" top 5 of mine, but it really can't be totally accurate.

Citizen Kane
Godfather
Casablanca
Edward Scissorhands
The Sting

----------- ones some of you specifically wouldnt consider because you aren't smart:

Edward Scissorhands
Pee Wee's big adventure
Happiness
Jackie Brown
Raging bull
Glengarry Glenross

these are in no specific order.

this reminds me i'm a little late starting me weekly film thread, i'll get to that this weekend hopefully so i can learn you some filmamacation.

Since you brought it up here are my five favourite classic films:

Double Indemnity
Nosferatu
His Girl Friday

Citizen Kane

...and has anyone here seen "Man Bites Dog"... that almost made it into my regular top 5. A low budget, blackly humourous, mock documentary from Belgium. Pure genius. Syk, you seen this one?

I'm a 70's horror buff too, but my kids are 8,7 and 3, so they really aren't into the hack and slash. They like monster movies and creature features.

I own the Elm Street Boxset, but only to be a completist, as I got bored when Freddy went from a legit scary boggeyman to a gameshow host of death. I prefer my horror a little more straight forward (unless it's unintentional humor in my revered "bad movies")

My daughter likes Freddy Kreuger, but he frightens my son, so doesn't watch (I never force my kids to watch scary movies and if something's too intense, we turn it off and discuss the movie (they have also become dvd extra feature addicts like me and love to see how these movies were made as it takes away the scariness for them)

yes, I caught this at a movie party one of my movie geek buddies threw and had to seek it out again as I missed parts of it.

I also liked "Bad Cop, No Donut" that borrowed a few quick homages to that movie.

OPRANO WARNING: if you don't like movies that are shot on a camcorder with a budget some of you spend on strippers in a single evening, tis movie isn't for you, but if you like something inspired, fresh, innovative and fun with buddies and brews, it's a must have movie. Ferris Bueller's Day Off

Scarface

Any film with Al Pacino, Robert De Niro, Nicolas Cage or Adam Sandler (shits and giggles).

No one in my family can understand why I've got Vanilla Sky on DVD and none of 'em will watch it with me again.
It's a total mindfuck, that's why I like it :)
Also under the "total mindfuck" category I think you could put 12 Monkeys and Jacob's Ladder.
Aw crap, I forgot to put Tim Robbins in my list... and Jeff Goldblum (purrr)

Miss Eve I loved her hair!! And her voice - god I wanted to talk like her so much when that movie came out, hehe. And that's the movie where I developed a never-ending lust for James Spader that still thrives to this day :P

Has anyone seen "Honey"? I'm really wanting to rent that one. Kinda looks like an ebony version of Flashdance. I love dance movies; one of the first dates Hubby and I went on we went to see Striptease. They didn't show on the commercials just how racy that movie was truly going to be - I thought it would just be a lot of dancing and pretty outfits! I was SOOO embarrassed sitting in the theatre I wanted to leave; I'm thinking "Oh my god I take this guy out to a movie where there's nekkid women practically fucking each other right on the screen, he's probably sitting there thinking I'm some kind of a pervert!!" lolol

We could do a "List of Movies You Couldn't Pay Me To Watch" thread... I've got a bunch of those :)

Shit add these to my favorites, Colin had to go and mention a Western...
Tombstone
Quigley Down Under
The Magnificent Seven
Unforgiven
Young Guns
The Quick and the Dead (okay the cinematography style was cheesy but it was a good story)

Joe, what was your beef with Forrest Gump?
This says it better than I could... particularly at this time of night! (http://blogcritics.org/archives/2004/03/25/234440.php)

But the real question is, what did you like about it?

It's shit.
review is very skewed and onesided,
total lack of balance or understanding of the movie and what it was all about.

as for replying me with question to my question,
you are NOT Jewish,
please stick to goim's format and just give me a plain answer

What's the difference between a Catholic wife and a Jewish wife?

The Catholic wife tells her husband to buy Viagra.
The Jewish wife tells her husband to buy Pfizer.

With you on The Wrath of Kahn, TE ...

Forest Gump was a good movie, but probably wouldn't make one of my "top" lists. Saving Private Ryan is in the same category.

Others I'd probably list, given the day:

Sort of surprised how many have listed Shawshank Redemption

It's a great movie but didn't think it would make so many top 5 lists

I read the story years ago

It's in Different Seasons from Stephen King by the name of "Rita Hayward and the Shawshank Redemption"

The movie is pretty true to the novella

My Bloody Valentine
The Eye (if you liked The Ring, check out this badboy)
Ringu

Plan 9 From Outer Space
Dead Alive aka Braindead
BasketCase
Frankenhooker
Tormeo And Juliet

I normally hate these kind of movies, but Jack Black was so amazing, the kids weren't the typical annoying whiny kids (and the fact they played their own instruments and did it well) and the music was great. It also spoke to my inner failed musician.

Terror in Tiny Town (only for those that do/used to smoke pot)
Masque of the Red Death (Vincent Price rules - especially doing poe)
The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly (all the leone spaghetti westerns)
Blade Runner

so hard to decide...
North by Northwest
Double Indemnity
Reservoir Dogs
The Birds
Stir Crazy
The In-Laws
MASH
A Clockwork Orange (they pussied out burgess's book or it would be a top - burgess is one of/if not the greatest literary figure of the 20th century...twas BS to rape a great novel like kubrick did)
Cool Hand Luke
SOB
Dr. Strangelove
Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back
Full Metal Jacket
The Hustler
The Shining
Kelly's Heroes
Going South
Animal House
Apocalypse Now
Which Way is Up

Damn this is harder than I thought, but here's some films I can watch over and over...

Ferris Bueller's Day Off
Heat
Face Off
Dirty Harry
Scarface

Any film with Al Pacino, Robert De Niro, Nicolas Cage or Adam Sandler (shits and giggles).

And I've got a thing for Sandra Bullock as well :D
After reading all that.... I'll go to the movies with you I think Trev ;-)

The Man With 2 Brains is my favourite movie of all time though... how do feel about Steve Martin?

The movie I recall blowing me away more than any other at the time I first saw it was Mad Max 1
I think Steve Martin is excellent! One of my favs is dead men dont wear plad. :okthumb:

Mad Max :rokk:

This should have been a top 500 movies thread :D

Watched 21 Grams the other night. It doesn't hit my top 5, but it's worth recommending! :okthumb:

I just saw "The Cooler" last night with William H. Macy and Alec Baldwin...damn good flick, could easily end up in my top 25 (I generally have to watch a movie more than once to place in amongst the top).

Two actors I really enjoy, acting their asses off and the extremely sexy Maria Bello.....can't beat that with a stick

I hate Alec Baldwin, the man, but when ths guy is on the screen and on his game, he owns that screen.

How many other actors could dominate a movie and only be on screen for about 15 minutes (as in "Glengarry Glen Ross")? His performance was about the only good thing in "Malice" and here in "The Cooler" he plays the asshole really well.

No Atlanta for me.

The boy is now almost 3 years old. (and what a handful he is)
He's a computer geek already, logs in with his own name and password and he plays educational (mostly) video games for hours on end.
