Serge you were wasting your time .. you just missed LIVE from Lincoln Center on PBS - Yo Yo Ma w/ Ton Koopman and the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra performing some nice selections from Vivaldi, Haydn and Handel - I think there is a repeat on Sat. though :-)))))

I thought American Splendor was brilliant.

YoYo Ma would have been good too....if he comes back to Southern Florida Serge and I will go with you to see him. He rocks!

Agreed! But I do have to admit I didn't like it at first. ClemsonTiger stopped watching it completely. It took awhile to get into it and realize what a great movie it was. Did you watch the extras where they followed the read Harvey around? Amazing how they nailed each character :)

cj, Lance and I are about as opposite on many things as you can be, but except for his slasher movies, we usually like the same ones :)

Captain Renault: What in heaven's name brought you to Casablanca?

Rick: My health. I came to Casablanca for the waters.

Captain Renault: The waters? What waters? We're in the desert.

Rick: I was misinformed.

Try the Gilmore Girls - very snappy writing and a hunk who is, quite literally, sponge worthy (he played such in Seinfeld :awinky: ). :inlove:

yeah, but this one actually got some Oscar consideration....

This isn't one of my low grade no-budget shot on camcorder movies..heheeh

Serge, sorry you didn't like it...it definately helps to be a fan of Pekar. Glad LadyLaw enjoyed it though, so not a total bust ;-))

This would probably not be the time to recomend "Hollywood Chainsaw Hookers" or "The Corpse Grinders" to Serge ;-)

i liked american splendor, but it wasn't a movie i'd recommend to just anyone. movies like that are an acquired taste, not enough explosions or tits for most americans.

however, if you DID like american splendor then you would really like the movie "crumb", a biographical documentary about the artist robert crumb. he is a friend of harvey pekar's and the character in american splendor that encouraged pekar to start using his stories as the basis for comics.

In the thread I recomended "American Splendor" to Serge, I also suggested "Crumb" as a companion piece. I really enjoyed that movie as well...and, like American Splendor, it helps to be a fan of the subject.

LadyLaw and I have the same fondness for Stanley Kubrick, so I knew she'd like it and some of my other suggestions, but those movies wouldn't be her cup of tea either I'd assume. ;-)

That about sums it up.

Movies that require thought are never popular. Thinking tends to scare people and hurt their brains.

I love a good explosion and gratuitous nudity as much as the next guy....
I get excited about men in rubber suits (of the Godzilla/Creature From The Black Lagoon nature not the pornos that Nickhas in his basement ;-))
I just love movies and it always depends on my mood.

I'm constantly seeking out little seen movies and these often aren't crowd pleasers...."Gummo" anyone? ;-)

was looking Amores Pera up on imdb.com and didn't see it

I'm always looking for good foreign flicks and have been getting into some of the great films of Mexico, my favorites being "Santa Sangre" and "Abre Los Ojos" (which was remade as "Vanilla Sky")

No worries ;-)

my spanish is primitive at best (but getting better with watching more movies in Spanish with english subtitles)

Mexican cinematography is definately improving...Mexican cinema is improving in all technical facets....There are a ton of great storie to be told with these filmmakers and now they can be told and look better.

Y Tu Mama Tambien is also an excellent foreign movie, as are Antonia's Line and Amelie. Oh, and Il Postino.

I really need to stop reading these movie threads :P

Yeah, Desperado was made for $7000.
Robert Rodrigues is a hero of mine. I loved his 15 Minute Filmmaker Course .

I read an interview with him about that movie and he was talking about these fantastic scripts but he only had a turtle and a guitar case and so he made a movie around those props and now he can make the movies he wants.

Sykk, I hate to disagree with our resident movie critic who probably saw more movies than all of us combined, but...
Desperado budget was NOT $7000,
it was a Hollywood production in the millions.

Maricachi Rodriguez shot for under $7000
;-))))

the movie which preceeded Desperado
