I never, ever go for less than a month. Ever.

It's usually closer to two months.

In 1998 I backpacked around the world for six months straight.

Pussies do international travel for two weeks or less.... unless of course you're just seeing one place.

Do I wanna bet? No thanks. You may well have travelled more than me. If so, congratulations. I respect well travelled people, particularly those who do it independently and at ground level instead of staying at the Hilton and doing guided tours.

I've travelled through 28 countries. Spent well over a year in total on the road.

Lots more to see of course but I'm not doing too badly for 34.

From being thrown into a ditch and smothered by my father in Lagos to protect me from a guy driving a petrol tanker into a Gov't building (Yeah there was suicide bombers even then)

Which is better depends of what you like.

When I travel I prefer to stay in a youth hostel instead of a hotel. I prefer to walk or take the metro instead of catching a cab. I avoid the tourist strips and find places filled with locals. I like to talk to people and find out how those in other countries see the world.

Sure I like slumming it, but I've seen the other side as well. You know nothing about what I can and cannot afford. I just think backpacking is a better way to travel.

Only one fluently.

Doesn't mean I can't communicate with people whose native language isn't English. I know a bit of this and a bit of that but unlike the Europeans I grew up in a country that shares no land borders with other nations at a time where there wasn't a big emphasis on learning a second language.

How many languages are you fluent in?

Errrrr... I don't speak to every local.

I speak to those I can communicate with. i.e. those that speak some English. In some instances, other travellers with better language skills, have done some translating. In fact, it's amazing what I've been able to convey even when there's been no language in common.

You know, in all my travels, the one thing I always respected about the Europeans and Australians I met were their treks. I always respected the sacrifices they made to accommodate such a long interruption in their careers -- something I have not.

Sure, many of them were doing it because they came from money and could get away with it, but many did not and I respected that because they gave something up.

But in the end, you are still left with a person. None of the people I met ever called me a pussy or questioned my choices. That is the difference between you and me.

I am not bitter because I didn't have the opportunity to learn a foreign language. I did. This is why I know some German. But the opportunity wasn't there before Year 9. Things here have changed since.

So consequently I am not jealous of the Europeans although I do envy their language skills.

Nor am I whining about it. Merely stating the facts.

That's the trick

as a wise man once told me ....

if you can keep them on the + side of the ledger .......

Edit - it was also the man who taught me to appreciate Bourbon
When he passed away a few months back I was at his bedside with a glass in hand
It was like Picasso's famous last words

I met plenty of Australians on the tours who came to Europe to see 20 countries in 4 weeks just because it takes so long to travel to Europe.

Joe,
I did both and can honestly say:
you see/learn 3 times more on the guided tours than on your own.

have you ever taken any decent guided tours?

It's a long ride on the mule, but I know Jack would be up for it. He is getting bored now that we have Jake and he does not get as much attention. ;-)

The duck was great last time and that egg plant / garlic thing Serge made was something that I have craved a few times since then.[/b][/quote]

thanks... i love having a garden and one of the benefits of living in the sticks is that I can grow alot of stuff.

This year I planted corn, tomatoes, okra, pole beans, lima beans, potatoes, onions, lettuce, squash, zuccini, cucumbers, cantelope and watermelon.

I have a separate area for all my herbs, but I have not planted it yet.

Too bad you are not around here b/c i have a guy that goes to Japan and gets all the trade-ins.

In Japan, you can only have 800 hours on farm equipment before you have to trade it in.

I got my tractor (18hp 4wd), post hole digger, tiller, box scrape, bush hog, pulverizer, hay spear and spreader for $6800!

btw, i am planning on a trip to Charlotte to see my brother. Would like to hook up while I'm there. I will let you know the date.

Trev, I really do not have that much. Not compared to many of the old timers around here.

All they want to do is pass it on to their kids who will just sell it for development. ;-(

Location, location, location.

I've seen some large lots (50+ acres) go for at little as $7K an acre here and there are 1/2 lots on the ridge on top of the mountain I live on that go for $45K (so $90K an acre).

I can't remember what Dan paid for his, but IIRC, it was less than $10K an acre and the value has probably doubled since then - and that's just the land, not including all the improvements.

Man.. what a day.

Bishop - will let you know asap. My bro lives in Fort Mill. Probably not too far from your office.

Trev - I only have 24 acres, but i am trying to buy land around me.... the 14 acres the lesbians own and the 30 on the other side of me. There is alot of good land cheap, but it is hard to find it close to town. I am only 2 miles from the city limits.

LL - One day, I hope to have you and Serge up for a weekend. It's country, so a weekend is all Serge could probably take. LOL BUt, I would show you guys a good time and we could get some good pics of Serge and my mules. ;-))

CJ - My wife hates it and I can understand it, but we live where there are many chicken houses and horse farms. We also live close to a marble quarry where a by product is ag lime. I dumped a dump truck load of chicken and horse shit and lime into my garden area. Smells like MONEY to me!

Vooman - we definitely need to hook up sometime. Tell Tony that you are going to his cabin to landscape and come here instead. hehe

KK - Tell the truth... you like tractors and 4wd's, right? ;-)))

Hey Wig,

I told Peaches that I'm definitely up for a visit. I just have to finish my painting project and get a few more plants in before it gets too hot. :)

You really did an awesome job with your property. I've always wanted to do some major work like that. Last year Tony joked that for my birthday he was going to rent me a Bobcat. hahaha

Now you know I've got a z71, the only drawback to living in LA is that no one has a yard the size that even needs a pushmower with Briggs and Stratton in it, much less a Deere :(
