Is it anti-American? Or just freedom of speech?

http://www.vh1.com/news/articles/1479176/2...919/index.jhtml (http://www.vh1.com/news/articles/1479176/20030919/index.jhtml)

Bands like NOFX and Green Day say they're going to use the proceeds from this recording to make television ad spots encouraging people (mostly their own audiences) to not vote for dubya in this year's upcoming election.

Thoughts?

Actually it is a good thing as more may become politically aware ...

But this guys may be a little misguided (in more than thinking their opinions carries weight because they have commercial success)

Anti-Bush compilation album due next spring, along with tour

Ummm that's after the next election

Edit - ooops I just looked at the date of the article 09.22.2003 - ah ha ha ha it never happened

I never understood why artists of anytype think that people give a shit about their political opinions.

Artists by there very nature tend to live on the frindges of society, and a vast majority of them are out of touch with average people.

So this leads me to retort: Who cares?

Mike the boy in the whitehouse should care...

less than 25% of eligible voters under 25 vote. One civics class isn't enough to encourage them to participate, I guess.

Most students tend to be idealists and "change the world" types, so they would more likely vote democrat than republican. Younger people are influenced by what people they look up to say, and these bands certainly do have a certain fan base to pull from.

If the student vote increases by 10%, and it all goes democrat, well... yes, the boy should care.

With profits from the disc being funneled into advertising, funds for the tour will be limited, but Fat Mike said he's prepared to pick up most of the cost. "I'm planning on losing a lot of money, but I don't care. This is something I really believe in."

Haven't heard anything about this or a tour or anything so maybe the capitalistic side kicked in and they didn't want to spend the $

Having the courage of your convictions is a wonderful thing

Well Vick... you need to put down those Andy Williams CDs for a minute and listen to some punk. :P

By the way, I just noticed yoru avatar.
Is it spinning clockwise, or counterclockwise? Pretty cool illusion.

This is one of those type of things where if you have an interest in an area you'll hear about it and oif you don't you likely won't. Don't know how much effect this particular drive will have but in an extremely close election even picking up say, 300 voters, in a swing state becuase of this could be a big deal.

Damn it EC, it's Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald and Glenn Miller he he he

For me Punk is The Ramones and Sex Pistols, not much on the 3rd generation stuff

The card is spins whatever way you want it to
after all the illusion is in your mind :)

Still think the idea about the bands doing a CD and summer tour is a good one if it encourages political awareness (even if it is a little misguided) - may even get some Bush supporters to come out and do similar things
