JR,
I read your post about how little you remember sigs, buttons, etc....
what about posters?
how well do you remember them?
I'll tell you whom I remember well:
grogans, labrets, j'sdudes, 6packs, even less articulate Fletch,
the shit stirrers...they DO stick out.
How one uses it is another story,
but I know for a fact, that you'll respond to business e-mail from grogan faster than some unknown you can't picture in your head...
i agree with that. i remember nicknames... i completely ignore their sigs and links unless i just want to know more about who they are. in the end, people are talking to names/people, not advertisements. i think that sigs have very little value myself. i think that the whole GFY thing is mostly newbies kidding themselves because the BELIEVE there is value. i don't believe in the value of a sig. i think its a nice thing in that it makes it easy for someone to check who you are but i think that is one piece of advertising that we are all trained to ignore.

I remember nicknames too ... as well as a general impression of what has been represented behind that nickname.
Recognition of the nickname might make it more likely that I would READ an email; remembering how that nickname has presented itself would be the deciding factor in whether I responded, or what that response might be.
When it comes to doing business, I don't give a rat's ass in hell what your politics are. After all, some of my best friends (and close family members) are conservative Republicans. :D
I do, however, tend to stay away from people who use terms like "pimp" or "bling-bling" in a business context, people who overuse the contrived piss as a marketing tool, and people who demonstrate either an overabundance of regard for themself or seem to lack the basic maturity one would expect of a businessperson.

:yowsa:
:biglaugh:
JR, your opinion is YOU - but just because you don't notice them, doesn't mean nobody else does ...
without looking, off the top of my head ... serge's sig tells us whats new at his travel photo gallery, or links to one of the threads in another section. colin's has a cute sentence like 'nice pornographers run this' or something, going to pleasure labs. pd has content god button. jr, you alternate between funny phrases rarely with advertising. gonzo has his music radio & a mixture of other links. masterp has an oprano poker banner, no text. peaches has had 'and you can still email me' & something about checks for months, then changed to a big weg banner last week. billy has 2 buttons with text under, a purecash and an isjustanasshole. carrie had a stocking site 'coming soon' in her avatar for a while - then replaced it with a sig button when it was live.
i could keep going if i really thought hard about it .....
in the banners at the top is quickbuck, weg, sexmoney, epassporte, purecash and i think maxcash is still there ...
sigs start conversation if you are creative and good at grabbing attention. they get 'news' across like payout changes, product changes etc. avatars are also useful marketing tool - every time i change photos, either object or personal pic, i get a comment from someone.
a 'sig' alone might not be very effective, but combine a sig with a thread, a press release, an avatar and a banner and you have a campaign. ya just have to know which order ;-)

You think an avatar could start a sucessful branding exercise?
having long hair in my avatar has been an unintentional marketing exercise ... your fur coat pic is a marketing exercise ...
why wouldn't an avatar be a valid marketing opportunity?! its a square graphic next to your nickname ... how much more obvious does it need to be?!

Hey, when I put my foot in it, I don't see any point in not putting it all the way in. :D
It's one thing to use it as a part of advertising/promotional material, since it's become part of the venacular whether I like it or not. It's quite another to go to a website and find that ALL of the material is written to appeal to Camaro-driving pimp wannabes.

Serge ... I don't think I said I wouldn't use the technique myself to promote a product or service should the occasion arise. I said that it is an extremely ineffective way to reach me when it's being done by others.

It's funny how some things stick in the mind and others don't. I'm not sure if it's a mixture of branding or just hearing/seeing it repeated so often that it sticks.
I couldn't remember tonight what the name of 12Click's site was, had to look it up even though I see him posting all the time, but ask me what any of the folks posting in this thread work(ed) with (besides Grogan's "some email something or other") and I could tell ya.
