View Full Version : Quality over Quantity.

In todays industry, there has been a mad rush to the lowest common denominator. This includes not only the takeover of TGPs, but also in webmaster boards.

As Serge has pointed out we do not want to sink like our competition to paying for posts, giving prizes away for any and everything. We do not want Oprano filled with useless posts, or overrun by kiddies who want to talk about nailing chicks and smoking pot.

In my opinion Oprano has been and always will be about QUALITY.

The big question is, can Quality overcome Quanity? Can Oprano survive in todays busniess environment by focusing on Quality?

If so, how can we emphesis the quality and start attracting other quality webmasters?

How can we improve on the quality of Oprano?

I am convinced that no matter what the fad is, quality is timeless and always in demand.

Well of course it can "survive" but as far as how much money it makes who knows.

Since there are 20 lurkers per active user, I think the alexa ranking will stay high and advertisers will keep advertising. Nothing is certain about 2 years from now, 5 years from now etc.

Survive might have been a poor choice of words, how about THRIVE.

It is not just about money, it is also about having the cream of the industry, and offering a top notch product. Having a community of bright people who contribute, but also learn and benefit from the knowledge ( lesson and mistakes) of others.

keen observation on the state of the Industry I got today via ICQ:

"Personally I came to the party because I wanted to listen to the more successful crowd talk, see what pearls were dropped on the floor and by watching everything anticipate the next big moves.
Problem is a lot of the big players are either watching for that same move or they have made the move to fuck everything that moves."

VERY keen observation in my opinion!

OMG Serge!!!

I remember a few months ago we had a little conversation after I banned that master blogger idiot on NSC after he made just 1 post, lol.

I said something about I rather sell my soul to the devil, and you said how much.

NSC was launched for one reason and one reason only. Because J'smoron ruined amateurmasters and none of us girls could make a post without him jumping all over us. So I put up a new board for me and my friends.

Ironically, then he got banned from amateurmasters and is now stalking me on my other 2 favorite boards... Oprano and Netpond.

Webmaster boards are all overun by stalkers, pervs and carreer posters now. I rather just throw myself into a chatroom of horny surfers and make my money that way. They are much easier to deal with than "webmasters".

While I am pro-piss, and think people should be able to debate issues till the cows come home, Oprano should not be a stalking grounds for people to harass others. Especially those who try to mind their business.

A couple questions for you to consider. Answer them and you have your answer.

1) Do you and Serge still enjoy having the board?

2) Are your advertisers happy with the results they get from the board?

3) Is the board still profitable?

If yes to all 3 you have your answer for sure. If not your answer could be anywhere from a minor tweak to the board to saying fuck it and closing it down.

i agree with a couple of those quotes. The current methods of business seem to be in a downward spiral. I catch myself watching to see how it's all gonna break and looking for the new opportunities that upheaval always brings.

I think Oprano presents the best vantage point. If something were to happen like Visa/MC completely leaving adult, I cant imagine not being able to compare thoughts with the people in this forum.

In the interim, it's also hard to totally ignore some of the other boards because there is business to be done there. Although the signal to noise ratio is unbearable. Anyone copying the GFY model is short sighted, I hate posts that were made just for the sake of getting a post and your signature out there. Post only when you have something to say.

With that said, I would truly hate to see Oprano start bribing for participation. I'm not sure I really care what a guy who'll whore himself out for a DVD player has to say. Things like the football pickem are much better...it reminds people to stop by, but it doesn't encourage them to post "would you hit it" posts...

its all about marketing, value and percieved value

if i would have asked anyone here 30 years ago... "do you think 100's of companies could compete nation-wide selling bottled water and succeed" each of you would have said no.

everything is possible. no one can cause you to fail in the end but you.

Mike, at the end of it all, if the content of the discussions is "compelling" to people, you will have a crowd. Playing games by cross linking threads, jacking people in circles, and attempting to drag people over from other boards just makes Oprano like every other board. More importantly, you usually end up dragging over the most useless posters... so why bother?

Your sponsors aren't getting value from board monkeys posting "nice babe [pic]" threads... and the rest of us don't get much joy. If I want that type of BS, I go on over to GFY and lower my IQ by 80 points so I fit in.

Make Oprano the flavor you want, not the flavor of the month.

You may very well be right about the quality of the contents of the Camaro, CJ, but I have heard a lot of "yutes" use the term.

Like much of their culture here in America, however ... the first and most frequent place I've ever heard the term was used by the same sort of folks prone to talk about mybabydaddy, mybabymomma, and (yes, I really did hear this on public transportation back about 6-7 years ago) "I donts want no training, I donts want no job - I WANT MY GODDAMN TITLEMENTS!"

1) yes and no...I enjoy talking with friends, busting balls with adversaries,
but the part of the job involving pissing with OBM (Other Boards Morons) has weared me off.

2) some are, some are NOT. Bishops swears by it,
Ken Lawson was saying it wasn't worth to him and GFY is the only place he advertises, so it works for some but not for others.

3) of course board is profitable, but I have no idea how me dropping going to other boards and hearding morons here for page views will affect the sponsor satisfaction. Our fixed costs of running Oprano are $400 a month,
it's HARD to make it a loser

I am doing well, thanks for asking :)

Been feeling a little burned out lately though, so next week I am going to take a little vacation and go visit my parents. Spending a little time at my step-father's cattle farm will do me a world of good and mom will fatten up my ass for you, hehe.

Sabby:)
