My mom raised me on that shit amongst others. Good memories and I am a sucker for a good melody.

Soft side? Man, I am a just an intolerant care bear, a skinhead tella tubbie. I like to give hugs and call people stupid niggers.

Ill have a drink with every single one of you. If you dont mind hashing it out verbally first. You should have seen me and Battus. Joe looked worried. I am a nice guy, I really am. Nobody that has ever met me in this industry will say anything to the contrary.

But this could be the beer talking.

Went to pick my oldest daughter up for Christmas break her freshman year at college, and on the way home she thanked me for all the times I "forced" her to listen to Bruce Springsteen - seems that knowing all the lyrics made her seem very cool to some of the guys.

Come to think of it ... the little creep (30) still has my "Last Poets" and "Velvet Underground" vinyl.

Okay ... so I'm down wit da (early) Neil Diamond, hip to the Gordon Lightfoot, and am very fond of Sinatra and Dean Martin. I have been known to sing along with Monkees songs when no one is listening. I still remember most of the lyrics to all of the Simon and Garfunkel stuff, as well as a whole lot of Pete Seeger, Phil Ochs, Merle Haggard, Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, David Alan Coe, and the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band.

However, given a choice between Abba, the Carpenters, or root canal, my response is hold the novacaine and get to drilling.

It this where ....

Brother Loves Traveling Salvation Show

is parked

However if someone was not blood kin and took off with the Velvet Underground vinyl it would be an offense

and was that early Springsteen that was forced? I can get behind that

:)

PD, I am quickly approaching 30, my parents are in their early 50's and listened to all that stuff.

I listened to Pancho and Lefty all summer, lol!

Didn't care much for anything after Nebraska until the Tom Joad album. Mostly "Greetings from Asbury Park" and "Born To Run."

My dad listened to rock and roll, but my mom's taste ran more to the Rat Pack and folks like the Ink Spots, Platters, etc. My grandfather was a big Grand Ole Opry fan. My tastes went from Motown to the Beatles & Stones to Cream/Who/Dead. Hung around the hippy radio station a little when I was a teenager and "met" (if you can call saying hello, smoking a joint with, sharing a beer with, whatever) Billy Joel, David Crosby, Judy Collins, and a couple of other people).

Got into bluegrass when the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band did the first "Circle" recordings; started listening to country when disco became popular (although certain recordings can still, ahem, make my nose itch).

As I told my daughter when she was in her Culture Club/Cindy Lauper phase, I feel sorry for people her age.

I did not need to resort to shaving half of my head and dying the remaining half purple and orange to piss off my father.

All I had to do was grow hair.

Hot funk, cool punk, even if it's old junk
It's still rock and roll to me

It's the next phase, new wave, dance craze, anyways
It's still rock and roll to me

Everybody's talkin' 'bout the new sound
Funny, but it's still rock and roll to me

I've never ever understood the fascination with Abba. They are definitely a love or hate group, and for me the latter.

I hate for anyone to be miserable, but you know, it can really fuel an artist. And Bruce's first brief marriage to that model/bad actress (can't recall her name) gave birth to the "Tunnel of Love" album which has some incredible stuff.

Just some of the lyrics:

Tunnel of Love:

Fat man sitting on a little stool
Takes the money from my hand while his eyes take a walk all over you
....
I can feel the soft silk of your blouse
And them soft thrills in our little fun house
Then the lights go out and it's just the three of us
You me and all that stuff we're so scared of
Gotta ride down baby into this tunnel of love

Brilliant Disguise:

I heard somebody call your name from underneath our willow
I saw something tucked in shame underneath your pillow
Well I've tried so hard baby but I just can't see
What a woman like you is doing with me
So tell me what I see when I look in your eyes
Is that you baby or just a brilliant disguise
....
Now you play the loving woman I'll play the faithful man
But just don't look too close into the palm of my hand
We stood at the alter the gypsy swore our future was right
But come the wee wee hours maybe baby the gypsy lied
So when you look at me you better look hard and look twice
Is that me baby or just a brilliant disguise

Tonight our bed is cold
I'm lost in the darkness of our love
God have mercy on the man
Who doubts what he's sure of

Take the soundtrack to Pricilla, Queen of the Desert, crank the windows down and the sunroof open on a perfect GA day and head up 400 to the lake (well, now, I head DOWN 400....) and THEN tell me you don't understand. B)

Neil Diamond is NOT "Can you admit it?" material!!

Now, even though I don't think it is "Can you admit it? material I'll admit to listening to John Denver.

Song: Rocky Mountain High
Artist: John Denver
He was born in the summer of his twenty seventh year
coming home to a place he'd never been before.
He left yesterday behind him, you might say he was born again
you might say he found a key for ev'ry door.

When he first came to the mountains his life was far away
on the road and hangin' by a song.
But the strings already broken and he doesn't really care
it keeps changin' fast and it don't last for long.

But the Colorado Rocky Mountain high
I've seen it rainin' fire in the sky
the shadow from the starlight
is softer than a lullaby

Rocky Mountain high, Rocky Mountain high

He climbed Cathedral Mountains he saw silver clouds below
he saw ev'rything as far as you can see.
And they say that he got crazy once and he tried to touch the sun
and he lost a friend but he kept his memory.

Now he walks in quiet solitude the forest and the streams
seeking grace in ev'ry step he takes.
His sight has turned in side himself to try and understand
the serenity of a clear blue mountain lake.

And the Colorado Rocky Mountain high
I've seen it rainin' fire in the sky
talk to God and listen to the casual reply

Rocky Mountain high, Rocky Mountain high

Now his life is full of wonder but his heart still knows some fear
of a simple thing he cannot comprehend.
Why they try to tear the mountains down to bring in a couple more
more people more scars up on the land.

And the Colorado Mountain high
I've seen it rainin' fire in the sky
I know he'd be a poorer man
if he never saw an eagle fly.

Rocky Mountain high, Rocky Mountain high

It's a Colorado Mountain high
I've seen it rainin' fire in the sky
friends around the campfire
and ev'rybody's high

Rocky Mountain high, Rocky Mountain high

I have a secret love for Hall and Oates. I am sure is stems from my dad going to school with Oates (same gym class) but nonethless I like them enough that I went to see them live in London two years ago. The day after I went to a Cradle Of Filth gig . Wonder how many people have done that before..lol.

You swear you've heard it before
As it slowly rambles on and on
No need in bringin' `em back,
`Cause they're never really gone

Just an old-fashioned love song
One I'm sure they wrote for you and me
Just an old-fashioned love song
Comin' down in 3-part harmony

my liking of ABBA is tough to discuss in mixed company
I'll also never forget the religious experience of seeing Barry Manilow live
it's no secret about my absolute love for old school shitkicking country and bluegrass...not this new pop country shite, but the truly tough fuckers like Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Marty Robbins, Johnny Horton, Waylen Jennings, etc.
I'm also not ashamed to admit I own almost as many Freddy Fender albums as I do Slayer albums....

I can sing most of Leo Ferré's stuff, or Georges Brassens.

But Im not ashame of it.

Can also sing most Elvis tunes... That Im a little ashamed of ;P

Also, my teen years were in a town with only one radio station. And it was top-40. So I can sing most late 80s hits. I got "cured" after that by a good dose of Metallica and NIN...

they have some really well written lyrics and can play so well live. I don't care what anyone thinks of it but Sara Smile has long been important to me (yes for mushy selfish reasons) and when they played it at that concert I cried. The good thing about seeing bands this side of their fame is that you can see them in smaller venues. They were actually part of the jazz fest and if you listen you can hear it.

Pah, I am proud.

I have never been a fan of Neil Diamond, but I've always loved Gladys Night and the Pips.

Midnight Train to Georgia is one of my all time favorite songs. Every time I hear it I feel like I am seven years old, sitting in the back of my mother's Galaxy 500, and listening to the Dan Ingram and Harry Harrison show on WABC in New York. LOL

oh man you are all finding out about my eclectic musical tastes.

Last year I was dragged to one of those 80's revival shows and ABC were one of the acts and seriously they were the best group there. They were such showman.

When Smokey Signs is a good song ..as is Look of Love and Poison Arrow. They were crooners updated for the decade.

There is an amazing cover of The Carpenters work called "If I Were A Carpenter" that has songs by Sheryl Crow, Sonic Youth, The Cranberries, 4 Non Blondes... it's really good.
