Powerslave for me. When I started listening to heavy metal back in '83, Iron Maiden was the first band I listened to. Number of the Beast was the first album I heard from them and then in 84 powerslave came out and havn't stopped listening to it since. Don't know why.

If you would have asked me last year I would have said Powerslave.
But this year I am gonna have to go with The Number of the Beast.

Where Bruce makes his first appearance. Cmon, run to the hills, children of the damned, number of the fucking beast. This album almost single handedly created and defined an entire genre of metal. All of melodic death, black, scandinavian death, metalcore, owe it all to Iron Maiden.
I dont like later maiden, I forget they exist after Powerslave.

first Maiden album I owned (I had the coolest mother in the world, she bought it for my birthday)

Bah, I owned Killers when I was a kid, and there is no way you can say Bruce is not superior.
But Murders in the Rue Morgue is a magnificent song. I would play that song over and over when I was a kid. Got to where my mom could almost sing along.
Damn, they must have remastered that hard, it sounds fantastic. way better than I remember.

I actually still have Killers and even Maiden Japan...
Piece of Mind was the first album from them I'd owned though.
Bruce is a much better vocalist than Paul D'ianno was. Blaze wasn't bad, he just had big shoes to fill and IMHO, he sounds better now with Iced Earth.
Anyone else have the old Samson album "Head On" with Bruce Dickinson (calling himself Bruce Bruce) singing and that dude Thunderstick playing drums?

Have to agree, they are a better band with Bruce and may have never reached the level of success without him
Didn't post to the fav Iron Maiden song thread but Murders is it
Steve Harris is an amazing bass player, huge influence (along with Billy Sheehan) for me when I was playing
Cheap ass early MTV video (http://www.ironmaiden.com/discography/video/wrathchild_128.wmv)
Which album had Eddie walking down a street with a bunch of famous bars on it?
Hammerjack's (where I was a glam fag regular for years) was one of the bars

yeah, but it's been years since I heard it. I would have to hear it again to ring a bell. I like Maiden a lot. They are the ones who got me to want to see other countries. All their albums had their tour dates listed and I remember always wanting to go to those place and see them play.
I've seen them 5 times, all with Bruce and all in Los Angeles, Irvine, Universal, and great western forum,

Iron Maiden without Bruce Dickinson is like a meaty cock without a nutsack. I think Blaze Bailey was talented, but it just wasn't right. My favourite album.. Toss up between Powerslave and Number of The Beast. But there's not much Maiden that i don't like.

I think we are the same age, what a great show that must have been. I would have killed to see that at that age.
My first show... Depeche Mode. 16, music for the masses tour. Girlfriend at the time was little emo goth girl. Wasnt a bad show really. Bout as good as 3 guys on keyboards could be in the mid 80s.
Ive never seen Iron Maiden live, an empty space in my heart that will never be filled. I dont want to see contemporary stadium maiden. Oh to have a time machine...

Amen.
It was an ugly growth period for metal, but we were lucky to witness the birth of a genre. Although I wish I could have been born a little earlier so I could have witnessed the really early punk and glam metal like the Dolls and Stooges etc.
I try and picture being 70 and listening to Cradle of Filth. Its going to happen. And its not like my taste in music gets any better. There has never been a better time for metal than right now. Its so fucking good, so much crossover, the kids of today who grew up on the old school and getting heavy doses of all that death related sub genres of metal are really doing some great things. 80s style thrash is creeping into all kinds of shit lately, I never thought thrash would come back.
Metal. A reason for living. Metal will never nag or cheat on you.

yup, history and literature thanks to Iron Maiden
I'm 34, so about the same age as most of you and I'm sure we all have the same reasons for becoming Maiden fans...outsider types who kept to themselves, generally artistic, not a lot of friends but a couple great friends, a passion for this aggressive music that was coming out that was unlike the generic pop music coming from our newly added to the dial MTV or our local radio stations (which you could set your watch by what song was on)
I remember this "discovering" of bands that did it louder, harder and faster than everyone else...Maiden, Priest, Sabbath, etc. It was darker and more sinister than the hippy metal our fathers listened to...it spoke to us on a level that nothing else would or could.
I remember my dad exposing me to not only a lot of this music, but the forefathers of metal like Blue Cheer, Iron Butterfly and Deep Purple (Black Sabbath just managed to transcend everything) but he also exposed me to the early blues, country, bluegrass and even some of the hippy rock...
I'll disagree to a point with Labret on that there was some great music at the time, you just couldn't find it on MTV, the radio or in pop music magazines...you had to dig deep and trade tapes around and it was all about the word of mouth....and the hour a weekend dedicated to the heavier stuff on the show Night Flight (that played stuff that even MTV's Headbangers Ball in the years to come wouldn't touch). Just like now, there's a ton of good music out there, you just have to search it out...P2P is the new tapetrading and it's going to help a lot of bands reach a couple more fans that would never have even heard of them otherwise...

Sometimes I wonder if we were twins seperated at birth. If that is the case, I obviously got all the penis girth and length and left you with a mangina.
The first time I heard Run to the Hills with Steve Harris having that fucking seizure on the bass I was thinking "holy fuck" I think I was maybe 12 years old, was a few years after it came out. And if I thought that was an amazing album, you should have seen my eyes when I was introduced to Black Sabbath's music.
