My New Favorite Movie

I'm not joking, this is my new favorite movie. It's definitely the most powerful movie I have ever seen, a title heretofor held by Saving Private Ryan (closely followed by Braveheart), in terms of invading my psyche. It's the first movie that I shed a tear in since I was 4 years old and watched Bambi (when Bambi's mother gets blasted).

The part that really punched me in the chest was when Jesus falls carrying the cross for the second time, and his mother runs to him and they do the flashback.

And as for the claims of anti-semitism, I just didn't feel it. The Jewish leaders who demanded Jesus' death were displayed as self-serving, as was Pilate, and the mob of Jews who fell in line with their leaders were offset by groups of Jews begging for the beating to end. It seemed very fair to me.

Be you religious or not, I think you'll get something positive out of this movie. At the very least, this movie will cause you to think about who you are and whether or not you're being the person you ought to be. I know most of you are above reproach, but I definitely came away feeling somewhat inadequate -- I don't know if I have what it takes to suffer through a beating like that for my convictions.

That's my take. If you've seen it, please share your thoughts.

how does it end?
when will they shoot the sequel?

I am writing the script, together with Luke Ford,
"Saving Private Christ", and expect it to be the hit...anybody looking for $30 mils to invest?

It doesn't end. It stays with you after you leave the theatre.

During that scene, I thought about how strong a woman would have to be to watch that happen to her son and be powerless to stop it. I wondered how my mother would react, and how destroyed she'd feel and it made me gasp for air.

no wonder people die watching this movie...have your brain not nurished with enough oxygen would do it.

I wouldn't suggest watching this movie in South America...the movie theater full of people with upset stomachs would result in HIGHER rates of suffocation than in USA.

BUFF,
When you have a 13 year old daughter as i do and you see how they are inundated with porn every time the log on to the internet you may think twice about a lot of things you do....

Children have a way of making you feel powerful and helpless at the same time.

These are the things i have thought a lot about the last year out of the biz....

It made me think about myself and whether I can live up to the example of love and tolerance that Jesus set for me. It made me think about whether it makes me a whining little pussy when I complain about anything and whether I take this life for granted. It made me think about how tough I really am and how tough I ought to be, and finally it made me think about the bond between mother and child and whether I show my mother how much I love her often enough.

it makes you think that if Jews asked for the oither guy to be put on the cross instead-
the entire world would have been Jewish and Christian religion would never exist...

That's another thing the movie shoved into the spotlight: the political nature of organized religion. The Vatican could take a good look in the mirror after this movie and ask itself whether it in any way resembles what Jesus had in mind for those who wished to follow in his footsteps.

Why is there a "real problem"? Everyone always thinks there's a problem.
Some of the oldest writings we have are people complaining about the world.

This is the way the world is. Deal with it.

I liked your first review better. :)

Haven't seen it. May watch it when it comes out on cable.

Don't really consider myself a Christian any more, but back when I was, the agony of the crucifixion was (IMHO) significant to the story of Christ, but not the central message. While the Roman Catholic Church feels the need to keep him on the cross (amidst the other idols they display), the true miracle of Christ is the resurrection.

It's funny to me about how when the movie first came out, the "anti-semite" clamor was so loud, and now that regular folk have gone and watched it, that accusation has been blown away by their opinions of the movie.

I haven't seen it yet, btw. I'll wait for it to come out on DVD. Hardly any movie is worth seeing in the theatres when it costs you over $35 before you get to your seat.

After all you know how it ends

What do you think about free spaghetti dinners with the movie? Paired with a nice Chianti?

What strikes me as funny is many accepting this movie as gospel (pun intended)

Your Christ and Your God and all your Gods are superstition and only have the power you invest in them by your faith

Step back for a second and consider how bizarre this sounds,

Being a Catholic and being raised by a staunch Catholic mother I feel no need to watch anything like this film!

So buff -

you seem a bit transformed by this movie. Perhaps an enlightening..or at least positive reflection on your life and how you look at it.

How long is it going to to you, (and the others that were touched by this movie) to slip back into your old habits.

And if you ARE religious and practicing your beliefs, why is it that you need a movie to remind you of such.

Sounds to me like instead of following ANYTHING, you need to be leading yourself every day.

You are the only person that can push yourself....

This at your house?

:P[/b][/quote]
I charge a lot more than that. :P

So
Katie,

How do you like Tampa so far and how do you compare it to New Orleans?
Miss anything about NO? What's better/worse etc?

I like Tampa. It is cleaner than NO which is always a plus for me.
I seem to get a sense that a lot more people spend time OUTSIDE and enjoy the sun and the weather.... in NO, I am not as willing to ride a bike down the street.

There are a lot of things that I like about new orleans though, the food, the history...but luckily we can still get our fill of it when we visit for the weekend.

I tend to enjoy cities more where the residents WORK, have insurance...and just plain don't make me feel uncomfortable walking down the street or in a store.

I know that sounds bad, but...hey, it is reality

Any religious types, please avoid this blasphamous, horrible post that follows.

The whole passion play thing as well as the "guy nailed on a cross" thing ... has always been a weird thing.

I've paid my dues and I've "put in my time" being raised Catholic and having gone to parochial school for 12 years of my life, (for anyone who wonders from what background I speak.)

And it has always seem weird. "Jesus suffered and died for our sins." So let's make sure he suffered REAL good!! Beatings, thorn crown, spear in the side, nailed to the cross instead of the normal ropes, you name it. If he suffered, and we're horrible sinners redeemed from his actions, then let's make sure it was a whole LOT of suffering. And let's constantly remind people of it all the time. Every church interior is surrounded by the 12 stations of the cross, and the main symbol of the church will be a gigantic dead tortured guy on a cross above the alter, center stage, 20 feet to 50 feet high if possible. And let's make sure we do passion plays repeated every year during Lent. And every Mass make sure we say enough times how he suffered.

Ok. So ... how come they don't make "happy religions?" You know, like, the giant Kool Aid guy. Always happy, busting through walls, nice rosy complexion, and tastes good. Smiles and a party erupts every time he shows up. Now that would be a cool happy religion, I think.

In fact I'm switching tonight. Not sure if I want to join the Strawberry or the Grape Sect yet though.

Because man is fallen -- we have a flawed nature, and religion attempts to explain it. The reason we have such depressing religions is that religion deals with the issues of life vs death and good vs evil. And since everyone dies, religion is already faced with a negative....

With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion. - Steven Weinberg

Religion is the masterpiece of the art of animal training, for it trains people as to how they shall think.- Arthur Shopenhauer

History does not record anywhere at any time a religion that has any rational basis. Religion is a crutch for people not strong enough to stand up to the unknown without help. But, like dandruff, most people do have a religion and spend time and money on it and seem to derive considerable pleasure from fiddling with it. - Robert Heinlein

Religion is for those who don't want to go to Hell. Spirituality is for those of us who have already been through it. - Anonymous

We must respect the other fellow's religion, but only in the sense and to the extent that we respect his theory that his wife is beautiful and his children smart. - H. L. Mencken

I was once told by my mother’s priest after he had left the church that "Religion is for the fanatics but faith is for the believers"

It works for me.

Yeah, the first thing I noticed about NO is it's dirty.

Have you been to the Dali museum yet? When you go (first time or again), remember that when Dali paints exaggerated hands it is symbolic of masturbation. ;-)

How are we flawed? This seems to be the popular view. Maybe the idea that we have to be MORE than animals is flawed - useful though.

Haven't been to the Dali museum yet, but we will go soon..right serge?

And, i am originally from sactown california..so better watch out! haha. jk...michael is contiunally teasing me that it is a cow town. ;-(

And for this religion thing again.....

it seems to me that people are just looking for an excuse to CHOOSE evil over good. We all know that coping out and taking the easy road is well...easy, but not always the correct path.

To me it seems that far too many people "put in their religious time" and therefore relinqished of any bad that they have done, or plan to do!

COP OUT....

i think having a set of morals or some faith you practice is a good thing....but stop pushing all of 'mankinds' faults onto ONE person to carry the burden. step up and do it yourself.

And finally (sorry so long) LOVED the comment collin

Please don't hold this against me, but I went to Catholic school all the way through college. When I used to go to mass I was always amazed at how people would go to church, stand and sit on cue, and give you the "peace be with you" handshake with such a nice smile... Once communion was done they were out the fucking door not waiting until mass was over, and getting the hell out of that parking lot to beat the rush and get to the diner first. WTF? People used to park their cars and BLOCK the entrance to the parking lot so that they were the ONLY people who could get out first. I've seen people yell, cuss, and actually fistfight in the parking lot not two minutes after they left church....

People are unbelievable. It doesn't matter what religion they are...

I don't think there's a church anywhere in the UK that doesn't have a pub at least 40 seconds walk away from it.... end of mass and the pub is full, thats why they don't open until 11am
