When I started, I just walked and counted my calories. I lost about 40 pounds that way. I was so overweight and out-of-shape I couldn't even jog 1/3 mile so I would walk for 20 minutes every day. No exceptions. My trick was to walk 10 minutes out which forced me to have to get home. As far as counting calories, I didn't even worry about WHAT I was eating -- just how MUCH I was eating. I ate McDonald's, Pizza Hut, dessert, whatever I wanted but I never ate more calories in a day than my target.

My Target:
I looked online for my calories needed to maintain weight and ate 500 less than that every day. That is 3500 calories/week which is exactly enough to lose 1 pound per week for an average metabolism - which mine turned out to be. Biggest culprit in my diet turned out to be soda.

For the past 4 or 5 months I've been lifting weights 3x/week too. I read everything I could including Meni's weightlifting section on http://www.askmeni.com Weightlifting is good because muscle requires more calories than fat. So as you gain muscle, your body uses more calories in a day. Now I run and eat a lot more healthily.

I never "dieted". I never used that word. I just thought "I need to think of myself as an athletic person". The problems with DIETS is they begin and end. They tend not to change your base behavior which got you into trouble in the first place.

Colin you look great. Cudos to you!

Meni great information too.

For me the trick is health and longevity. Once I stopped eating animals (except fish/seafood) I had no trouble. I could eat as much as I wanted and not gain any weight. I do, however eat good food. I can’t shake my southern roots so once a week I gotta fry something. Catfish, fried green tomatoes and some slaw with extra mayo. I also will not, no way give up wine and drink at least 4 bottles a week.

If I ate at all those fast food places I’d probably be sniffling an ocean from the preservatives. Now that you’re so focused on your healthy maybe you should try moving slowly into organic and more fruits and veggies. You’d be amazed what it does for your skin and emotional well being.

I'm the opposite. I eat animals twice a day. I can understand people who don't though it is just as easy to lose weight as an omnivore. ;-)

A 3 oz piece of chicken is only 250 calories. You can buy really lean hamburger that is only 130 calories/burger at Publix.

WOW Colin! You look great!

I've lost alot of weight myself, to the effect that my suits don't fit, and I had to borrow Nick's Jacket for a funeral about 2 weeks ago.

Losing weight is the best, I now can just buy XL instead of XXL's.

Yeah, I use my Foreman every day :okthumb:

This lean hamburger is amazing. I think it's about twice the cost of normal burger but it's loaded with the same amount of protein but many less calories and less fat.

I eat about three filets a week. About to throw a top round on the grill in 5 minutes actually. Noticed it was pretty lean when looking at food stats the other day.

For steak, the cheaper the cut the more lean? Wtf. I would have never guessed.

Yeah, right. ;-) Lots of stomach too. The funny thing is as I lost weight I lost it in surprising places. Legs, arms, and so on. Places i didn't realize I was storing fat. I even lost a shoe size believe it or not.

Another amusing thing. The fat in my face was disguising wrinkles because my face was "inflated". Now I have wrinkles. :-o
