I would suspect that it's much like the pictures they flash on the news of the guy who robbed the local 7-11 and got his face caught on the security camera.
They're not sure who he is, but they want him.

I don't know what a john doe warrant is specifically though, this is just a guess.

John Doe warrants seem to be issued when the defendant's name isn't known and the time frame to file charges is running out. That's strictly a layman's take on it. :okthumb:

Well, thank you Carrie and Peaches, those answers gave more insight to it. Nothing bothers me quite as much as secrecy, especially where arrests are concerned. I'm always amazed at the people who will believe the charge made just 'cause a policeman has made such charge. Many times they arrest someone just because they can not due to any validity. Sure there are good policeman, don't mistake me, they are also human and where there is humans there is that urge to do that which they are not supposed to do~

Good morning!

A John Doe warrant is most typically used in bank robberies, where the face is known but the identity is not. The statute of limitations period is usually not relevant, and in bank and convinence store robberies the JD warrant goes up quickly.

The FBI states that only in "ironclad cases", where there is recent, solid evidence of an actual child molestation, will JD warrants be issued.

John Does #1 and #2 were captured after their faces were profiled on America's Most Wanted.

John Doe's can be used in civil suits as well. When people hide behind companies, alias', or if they are just not known at the time. It is a tool for attorneys to get supena power to find out who these John Does are.
