How do you know which religions to take seriously ?

I go by the food rules, If a religion has a rule pertaining to food I dismiss it as being trivial.

I am sure that ( God, god, G_d, the goddess, YHWH, Allah ) really couldn't give a shit what we eat.

Once again I'll make it easy

Religion = Superstition

Simply man trying to explain something that don't have an answer for

Hold Christianity up against Greek Mythology - same thing except less people died in the name of Greek Mythology

Voodoo practitioners have it correct, the only power your chosen deities have is the power you invest in them through your faith

There is no religion that should be taken seriously.........

I give deference to all major religions. Even minor ones.... it is the wackos that I make fun of most.

The problem with orginized religion is that man is flawed, and thus any orginization of people will be flawed.

To this day major religions have one scandel after another, and its not the religions fault, or God's fault but the people who are involved. Anytime there is orginization there is a lust for power, abuse of power, in general men fuck things up.

Do you believe that there is a God who looks like a banana and gives us all ice cream when we die? Probably not. Now, think of the reasons why you don't believe that. Those are the same reasons why I don't believe in any religion.

All the major religions were started by whackos. It's only the fact that all those guys have been dead for so long that many of us don't normally think of them as so. They've been mythologized.

Jesus and Mohammed would never have survived even the local press much less CNN and FOX.

No doubt, and it took a devoted group of wackos and a little luck to expand the religion to such world wide levels....

However, I am still respectful of peoples religion - as long as they do not throw it in my face, and try to engage me in a debate - I am respectful.

Religion tends to make me laugh. I don't feel very respectful of religious beliefs but I don't debate the matter too much anymore -- except today I feel like it a little.

There's the Christians who think they are "good people" because Jesus died for THEM (that took a lot of effort).

There's the Muslims with .. oh, man don't even get me started on the MUSLIMS.

There's the Jews who believe they are the chosen people (yeah, right. How's that going?)

There's the Buddhists who have real trouble with believing in the reality of the universe and so spend all their time building golden statues of a fat I am a MORON,.

Then, of course there are the Hindus who believe all things in this world should be respected (except the Muslims, of course).

Damn, this should worry me, but I agre with Mike on this one - I tend to respect the religious beliefs of most anyone. I tend to get agitated about them only when they try to force them on ME, whether it's through evangelical fervor or a Politcal Action Committee.

Mike... that sounds like a very healthy attitude!!

I listened to a special about how religous the world is on BBC radio the other night.. was really interesting. They conducted a survey in quite a number of countries simply asking if people believed in god.. whatever their god may be. (they didnt mention sample sizes and I doubt it is scientific.. but was interesting)

The top countries in % of believers was mostly places like Nigeria, Yemen, India and third world countries.. But the USA was the one exception at the top of the list.

Nigeria was close to 100% but the rest of the top beleivers fell in the 70-80% range... USA had about 75% of people respond that they did believe in god.. third on the BBC list.

In Contrast, Britain was alomost at the botom of the list with less than 50% of people saying they beleived in god... and most other first world fell in the 50-60% range.

When it came to % of particualar religions that believed the Hindus came out on top with around 75%, then Muslims and Christians not far behind... Interesting part of that one was the Jewish... who came last and were way lower than most... around 55% I think it was...

During the course of discussion the presenters drew some conclusions about why certain countries have a much higher belief rate than others... but I doubt many Americans would like their opinion... They sugested that all countries with high rates of belief were countries where children are not given any broad religous education or choice.. and though society indoctrination and social presure people are "forced" to admit they worship a certain god... until eventuially they believe it.

I dont know if I agree with that analysis in the case of the USA but have always thought it queer how many athletes and politicians choose to publicly thank god for this and that... Anyone here care to offer an opinion why America is so high on the scale of believers compared to other first world countries?
