View Full Version : Video editing software

Hi all,
I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for video editing software to use? Currently I am using Ulead Video Studio v7 and although it can perform basic functions I am looking to upgrade into a more pro environment. I have been floating back and forth between Adobe Premier Pro and Vegas + DVD but both seem to have some substantial issues. Right now I am leaning more to wards Adobe, but I am unsure about a couple of things with it. I have looked at Vegas and shut the program down after staring at the screen and blinking at it for an hour or so. The interface just seems a bit on the confused side.
So, if anyone has experience with either of those programs (I KNOW you do Gonzo LOL) and wants to praise/condemn either, I would appreciate it. But if you know of any other programs which are powerful video editing programs please tell me their names.
Some of things I simply have to do is
1) Be able to export/render the edited file the same as the file I imported
* this means I will be editing an AVI with a proprietary codec from my capture card and I want to be able to save the edited file in the exact same format. No compression at all from the editing software (I do not know if adobe or Vegas is capable of this) Ulead currently allows me to do this......not bad for a cheap program
2) add transitions easily.............I don't know about premier pro, but premier seems quite complicated in adding transitions and I cant seem to get the effect I am looking for with it (a simple cross fade is impossible for me on premier)
3) create sharp titles, scrolling or otherwise when file is saved. Ulead pixelates the shit out text.
4) intuitive audio editing. The problem I see with the simple editing I will be doing and these great big expensive programs is that because they enable you to do oh so much with multiple audio layers, they have a tendency to be WAY more complex and easy to make mistakes (audio out of sync and so on). All I want is to be able to create a simple cut that corresponds to the video. I don't need L cuts or any of that. nice to have when I play, but not necessary at this point.

It seems as though my answer is simple enough. Stick with Ulead, but, there is a problem with rendering in Ulead on both my editing machines that prevents me from rendering any video longer than 16-17 minutes. Not a huge issue since what I am currently working on a 15 minute full length movie is fine, but we have plans in the future that will require me to produce up to 120 minutes of video and render it. So obviously I need new software. I would like to purchase something relatively quickly so I can start the learning curve on it and be proficient on it in a couple of months.

If you read all this AND have suggestions, thank you very much.

Oh, one last thing, please do not recommend pinnacle as I have had nightmares trying to import captured AVI's into it and you cannot render/export/save without it attempting to compress the file for you. And they have fixed, crappy settings.
This is a good question for girlgeek :)

Labret, I won't go into why I couldn't possibly have time to download them all.........I would have exspected a slightly more intelligent response from you........god knows why.

But as for your warez comment. That may be an option for you. Stealing from the software developers like that. But for me, where I will be using these products, warez is definitely not an option. I am not opposed to downloading and trying out trial software, but if it is possible I would prefer to avoid downloading as many crappy/buggy/adware infected programs as possible. If no one can help me out then no problem, but if they can it would be appreciated

Your warez fears are irrational and baseless. I am a warez whore of the highest calibre and rarely are proper releases and or rips buggy or problematic in any way. That being said, if you get your warez from Kazaa, then you deserve what you get.

alt.binaries.multimedia.utilities has a full good rip of Vegas Video 4 + DVD right now.

And alt.binaries.cd.image has a proper release of Premiere Pro.

Go ahead, I wont tell anyone.

Oh, those are usenet groups. You get those on AOL yeah?

The brand new Pinnacle Studio 9 I think has all you want - I chose it above all other low - mid-price products becayse it is now fully 16:9 widescreen compatible. At less than $100 it's more fully featured than many far higher priced products. It also has intelligent background music handling etc - very intuitive.

Its ok there Master chunk Ill share my bowl of fruit loops. From the looks of that pic of you in your underware and bedroom -- your not far behind me.
Come to Atlanta and we will show you how to eat.

That money youve saved on stealing software and music might be well served to buy yourself some real hosting. That 30 clip I assume of Paris Hilton timed out due to a network error.

Did you get a gallery listed at the hun today or something?

I had my cock out ready to rock out....
"network error"

I can only guess that this is a splice and clip job of the paris hilton vid.
Let me know when you reboot that NT server and I can peep it. I was really interested if you could do some editing.

I guess it goes without saying that you might want to connect to my video from the university. 56K and it might all be downloaded by tomorrow.

I have premiere here, on a matrox Xtreme pro setup. Apple Final Cut Pro 4 seems very good as well, especially with the "shake" program attached. With this stuff you can produce up to and including broadcast quality. A number of films in Sundance this year were done with FCP4 and a thing called "Magic Bullet" to get the coloring right.

It depends what you are editting... and how much you are willing to learn. If you just want to do snip cuts and crap, you can almost use just the windows movie maker thing.

Gonz........... thanks for replying, but i KNEW what your reply would be heh heh. I think I may have to take vegas out for a quick trial spin to see what, if anything I can do with it. I will also have to be able to do some sweet talking to get it as I was going to get adobe premier pro with standard overnight for only $529, I will have to do some serious peeking around the net to find vegas for that low I exspect.
I will break down and try the trial, probably tomorrow, and see what its like..

I am editing video captured from miniDVs, DVDs & Hi8, pretty linear edits. One source file. & believe me when I tell you that the single most important priority for me is learning how to do what I do better. Not just for the financial gain that I can get, but for pride. I always want to learn more and do better. If I go back and look at videos I have done in the past that I thought were bangin at the time, now I can rip them apart and see dozens of ways they could have been better. I hope that in 6 months I will look at what I am doing now and feel the same way. I am never happy with what I know and always hungry to learn more. Thats life, or how i live it :)

Spaz, my suggestion is this: Look at your local university or CC and see if they have video related courses. Here in Montreal Concordia has a full certificate video program that I am about 60% through now. At this point, our group of three are writing, producing, filming, editing, and doign music for an approximate 15 minute "entertainment" story.

Editing in fact is the LAST part of a good video production, not the first. You can create great videos with nothing more than a camera to camera edit - but the material as shot has to be of best quality, otherwise you are going to drive yourself bonkers! Spend the time, effort, and money to improve your camera work, lighting, and image framing and you will get MUCH better results.

I look at some of the stuff I filmed a year ago, and compare it to things I am working on now, and it just isn't anywhere near the same. The clip Gonzo put up is a good example of nice lighting, interesting and stable camera angles, and fairly fluid editing techniques to get a pleasing result... but VERY simple straight cuts on good material would look reasonable.

Hi again Alex!
Believe me when I say that I truly wish that it was possible for me to get some sort of formalized training in this field. I really REALLY do love what I do. No matter what is going on during the course of a work day sitting in front of my pc 'editing' a video is a real joy. But this is my full time job 40-50-60 hours a week + a wife and 2 kids for after work pretty much prevents me from pursuing any continuing education
for the time being any way.
As for the complete production of the videos I HEAR ya. Oh man have I had some real bonafide challenges in trying to compesate for less than high quality material to work with. I was hired to edit videos. So right now thats the only place my focus can be. I figure it like this;
the stuff that comes in to me are diamonds in the rough
I cut and polish them the best that I can and give them to a seller who turns them into money.
I just wish I was a better polisher heh heh, with sharper tools.

Yes Spaz thats the one we were discussing.
Ive got an added bonus for you next week on the OWNED show.
Serious scoop that CJ doesnt even know yet.

Jason Weaver - the angry drummer from Fusebox will be on the show next week [if the phone patch gear comes in] talking about music being integrated into your porn videos and previews.

Jason is knows Vegas Video inside out as you can see if you view this vid.
And he does some work with my company Evil Empire Inc as well.

So you might want to stay up past your bed time and listen in.

Ladies ....apparently Jason has some kinda sex appeal since Darci asked me to package him up and send him along with her CD and DVD so maybe you can ask him some off color questions as well.

OWNED isnt about busting peoples chops...its all about control of your business.

Ill agree with you there Alex.
But this video wasnt shot to be reasonable. This video was shot explictly to be rebroadcast on TV. Specifically MTV Asia where it is currently running.

Expect to see it in the states at some point. But remember you saw it FIRST on Oprano.

I wont steal Jason's thunder but I can also post a link of if interested that he did as an exercise using a still video camera that also captures small avi clips. If you look closely at the end you see my cameo as I get shot.

Again its all in the composition and the edit. If your interested Ill FTP it and post a link.

Gonzo, always interested. I didn't want to suggest that the clip woudl be better with just straight cuts, but with such nicely shot material (the quality of the initial video) it is much easier to get a hot final product.

You might want to have a look at magic bullet, it really does a number of video, gives it a real 35mm film look. The Movie Underworld was done with it.

heh heh Carrie, the reason I mentioned Pinnacle was because I purchased that myself (v8) and there is no way to save the file in the original form from it (sort of a save as>same as file type option). And there is really no effective way to manipulate the settings to the degree I would need. At least not in the version I had, I have no idea about v9.

I've never even looked for that ability Spaz because my card imports everything as an .avi and I hate .avi - it's huge and bulky. Once I'm done cutting/editing and getting my URL on the vid I want it in .wmv. Nice small file size.

(Of course I'm also one of those people who wishes Quicktime would just collapse and go away, I hate it hate it hate it.)

Here Here! I agree with that sentiment 100% But not for any real tangible reason. More like I have always used WMP and I am kinda very used to it. Plus, it does give me some idea of where the download progress is whereas I have never been able to do that with QT (maybe others can). I also like to resize the video I am watching, and WMP lets you do that, QT has always placed the video on the screen in a fixed size and that bothers me.

I don't like AVI either, its freakin HUGE, but when I take it into my compression programs the output if very clear and nice and small. I need to find a better wmv compressor tho as the one I use SUCKS! heh heh

MB is really the best way to accomplish that finished film effect that you cannot get anywhere else. "Coloring" of a film (think Underworld, The Crow, The Matrix series) is an important part of communicating the entire story. It is even more important now as more film makers are moving over to high end video to shoot on rather than 35mm film for issues of cost and speed of digitization. Almost all modern films have some sort of ILM work done on them.

Alex,
Are most of them still shooting on film and then importing, or are they going full digital?

Edd

I'd recommend Vegas to just about anyone who asks - Its easy to learn and use and very robust - lots of output formats - a good program all around... :okthumb:

Carrie - movie studios still use film cameras. alway will, IMO - you just get more flexibility with a panavison or arri setup for shooting a movie. Digital IS there, but only Lucas can afford the cameras! As soon as its shot, however, its digitized - dailies are viewed and editing (digitally) begins - I was in the industry for a very short time and there was a concern early on about digital replacing film, but digital is so integrated into the process now that its no longer an issue!

for smaller scale production - and "direct to TV" or internet type stuff digital is a boon - film-like results (with a little processing) and MUCH lower cost!

Ladies ....apparently Jason has some kinda sex appeal since Darci asked me to package him up and send him along with her CD and DVD so maybe you can ask him some off color questions as well.
Pics? :)

Is there no show tonight?
You aint never happy. I give you video and you want pics. Fuck it!
I might just bring the bastard on live and hand him a mic. Happy now?

Raw Alex

Heres the clips grafted togther by Canon PowerShot A70.

I still say and Jason proves....its all in the edit. Keep in mind this is the first video shot to test the full capabilities of Vegas Video. Looks up the specs on that camera...and realize every shot was done without any additional lighting.

If your interested in a little video out of the ordinary without breaking the bank then you and everyone else needs to tune into OWNED next Tuesday where I plan to have Jason on the show LIVE!

Enjoy me being shot and killed in "The Hit"! (http://www.gonzomovies.com/thehit.mov)

PS.
Other "people" on Oprano have recently posted about having a "friend" you can ICQ em about to do some work for you. A word of advice...demand to see examples and talk direct to the "friend". If you smell bullshit...it more than likely is! You owe it to yourself to hit Jason and myself up for a quote on your next project. We deliver and youve seen the proof in this thread.

final descision is we stick with what we have. It's working fine for the time being, no need to improve on it :)

Hi Alex, I have been working with Adobe Premier Pro for the past 2 weeks and I am sold. I only have the trial version right now but I will be purchasing this program for use at my home 'office' as soon as possible. The goal is by this time next year to have
Adobe Premier Pro
Adobe After Effects
Adobe Encore
and saving up for Magic Bullet.
Someone on another board told me that if Vegas was confusing to me I might as well forget about Premier Pro, well, that was a statement they shouldn't have made. I still can't do a thing with Vegas, but premier has become quite comfortable for me and I am stunned, seriously stunned with the kind of subtle changes I can make to even the simplest of vids to improve their overall 'feel'
I know there are a lot of Vegas fans here but for my dollar, the combination of programs I just laid out above will be able to produce some seriously good videos.

Now if I could just convince everyone to pay more attention to their lighting and framing I would be in heaven LOL

I've recently upgraded to Adobe Premiere Pro from Premiere 6.5 on my Win XP editing computer and I am pleased with the program. I have been using one version or another of Premiere every day for six months to edit videos and trailers and it is easy to learn, especially if you read the help or a book or watch some tutorials online. I am also now learning Adobe Encore to author my own DVDs and I even installed Audition (a loop-based music creation & audio editing app) that came with the approx. $550 bundle. What's nice about these apps is the integration they offer with Photoshop (bringing in images as editable/animatable layers into a video or DVD menu for example) and the fact that there is large user base to learn from.

Sounds like a nice bit to discuss tonight with Jason. Hes used them all....I guess thats what I get for being disorganized...I can react to the concerns on the board and we can customize the radio show!

Volantt I can't really sit here and say whether or not I agree with your opinion here. What I can say is Vegas didn't work out for me
because I am a dipshit?? probably.....
BUT, having admitted to my own limitations as I have I would like to ask this question to all of you who use Vegas, and this is not sarcasm, just curiousity and a desire to know.
I have done a bit of researching around and have found some excellent deals on adobe packages, that include all the adobe programs mentioned here. Some are really the standard for the industry (think photoshop) and all these programs are deisgned to work together to put out a better product........seemlessly. That includes the ability to import PSDs with the layers in tact. Not only that but you can build up from one program to many over time and they will still work together smoothly. Add in the numerous companies fighting to get their plug ins for adobe products seen and you can have a pretty dynamic set of tools at your disposal.
Now, trying to break away from the adobe whoohaw sales pitch there for a minute, here are my questions
1) How many other programs with more advanced features work seemlessly with Vegas?
2) How many (rough estimate, not asking for anything close to an exact number that'd be stupid) other companies make plug ins with advanced effects and such for Vegas products?
I am not dogging Vegas at all. Gonzo and I are friends and we have discussed editing programs for quite awhile. He gives me advice and I give him advice, it goes both ways and I respect him and his opinion and he loves Vegas. I just want to know if they have the compatibility that adobe products have.
