Does everyone realize that no single individual has his own holiday ( with work off) in the United States except for MLK.
Do not get me wrong, MLK did some cool things, but come on - does he really deserve his own day if Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln cannot get their own?
Political correctness?

That Jesus feller has a few... Chris the Indian diddler has one... Every vet has one (sure we have to share but wtf else is new)...
I'm guessing you mean no US individual has own recognized holiday, other than MLK, yes?
Who in last 50 years deserves a day Mike? Isn't it a greater injustice that no women are honored? Mother's Day... whoop tee doo...

I am sure there are plenty of women who deserve their own holiday.
I know my mom does for putting up with me!

In 1983, Congress said that MLK day should "serve as a time for Americans to reflect on the principles of racial equality and nonviolent social change espoused by Martin Luther King, Jr."
Damn straight. That's what America should continue to strive for.
Lincoln and Washington were unfortunate enough to be born a week and a half apart. If not for that, they'd have their own holidays.
I believe Columbus Day is still a holiday for federal employees.

If I member right...
Prior to MLK, both Washington and Lincoln had their own day... Because they were creating too many holidays, they merged Washington and Lincoln into President's day.

Sarettah - I think that's right. When I was a kid we got both Lincoln's & Washington's brithday off from school.

Sorry, folks ... Nixon combined the two holidays and created President's Day back in '71, or 12 years before the MLK holiday was created. Can't blame "them" for this one, although the arguement does certainly appeal to some folks.

ahem... I did not say it was because of MLK... I said they existed PRIOR to MLK and combined them because of the too many holidays....
I couldn't remember when, but it seems it was about the time that they started moving all the holidays to Monday...

I am not now, nor have I ever been, a member of the Communist Party.
I admit that I have read Marx, which makes me suspect to the paranoid (who would suspect me anyway).

Please note that I did not mention anything about MLK day forcing a President's day...
I knew the order in which it came, I was just musing why a great man like Washington, the Father of this Country does not have his own holiday.
Nothing more, nothing less....

"Until 1968, both February 12 and February 22 were observed as public holidays to honor the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln (February 12) and George Washington (February 22).
"The Uniforms Holiday Bill was signed on June 28, 1968, and was intended to insure three-day weekends for Federal employees by celebrating four national holidays on Mondays- - Washington's Birthday, Memorial Day, Veterans Day, and Columbus Day. It was thought that these extended weekends would help the economy.
"In 1971 President Richard Nixon proclaimed one single federal public holiday, the Presidents' Day, to be observed on the 3rd Monday of February, honoring all past presidents of the United States of America. "
Now, interestingly enough, you Google around and you'll find that a lot of people have their panties in a knot over the issue of President's Day. Some of the debate centers on whether Nixon's proclamation in '71 actually changed the name of the holiday; apparently, in 2000 Rep. Roscoe G. Bartlett (R-MD) sponsored H.R. 1363 to force federal agencies to refer to the Washington holiday by its proper name (no word on whether there is a movement for a Constitutional ammendment on this issue - yet).
I don't dispute that Washington is "deserving" of a holiday; but when you get right down to it ... Lincoln deserves his own day every bit as much as Washington. Were it not for Lincoln, that which Washington "fathered" would have been a brief footnote in history.

Oh, I know Lincoln was a Republican. I even voted for a Republican (Ford) once.
I voted a split ticket (probably 60/40 Democrats) for a long time - but 'long about Reagan the Republican party took a hard right, and left me in the dust.

No, actually ... I thought about it long and hard, because I - ahem - was not a fan of Richard nodickiamnotacrook Nixon. However, McGovern was a joke.
So, I wrote in a vote for Harry Truman.
