Is there any reason to cancle all the flights "suspected" of being used by terrorists ?

Aside from politicians being able to point to them and say look how close it was to happening again, stay afraid, vote for me, I will keep you safe from the evil ones.

Doesn't it make more sense to just put an undercover swat team on the plane and take into custody suspected terrorists ?

It pisses me off to no end that there are "known terrorists" known terrorists should be dead terrorists.

Yes, because those in power know that fear is a useful method for controlling the masses.

You want the answer in pictures or words?

Good "taken out of context" quote Colin

The real question is why are they not doing anything real to apprehend the suspects, seems to me if they are "suspect" flights looks like a good place to set a trap for suspects.

Well, setting a trap usually doesn't involve endangering the lives of 300+ innocent civilians.
As well as setting yourself up for entrapment.

Lets see

Terrorst is suspected to board flight 666
Cancel flight 666
Terrorist waits until different flight is available

Ortion 2

Terrorst is suspected to board flight 666
Flight seems to be boarding as normal
Authorities apprehend terrorist suspect as he is boarding plane

Entrapment ?????????????? Sorry Carrie, but entrapment is completely out of this equation. Can't fit no matter how it is twisted.

What world do you live in ?

Jeff you can't apprehend someone and arrest them for simply boarding a plane and having done nothing wrong.

In order for any charges to stick, they'd have to wait until they caught him in action trying to do something - and that means being on the plane, up in the air, endangering the lives of all of the passengers.

I don't know if it's stupid or not. Hopefully, the intellegence they are using is from sources a little better than those that sent us off to get rid of Saddam's WMD programs.

Overall, however - IMHO, I think it is very likely that at some point in the future the government watchers who are spending a lot of time "staring at the sky" are going to get something very unpleasant jammed up their (and our) asses. Further IMHO, if/when that happens you'll find that the people supposed to be protecting US were really protecting the financial intrests of industry X, and dragged their feet at forcing some folks to spend enough money to properly protect us - which is at least part of what happened on 9/11.

Tell that to the people in Guantanamo Bay.

If someone is a suspected terrorist they can indeed be apprehended and brought in for questioning, police pick up "suspects" all the time.

They may or may not be able to charge them with anything, but I am pretty sure they are not terrorist suspects for nothing. (Of course, I might be on Ashcroft's list)

The point I am trying to make is so much "feel good" Look what I have done crap is going on, and very little is actually being done to deal with the problem.

Fact, it is just as possible for an organized group to make the same 9/11 type attacks today as it was on 9/10

Every time I have flown First Class they have handed me at least 3 weapons as deadly as a boxcutter, the only difference is the flight crew and the other passengers will react differently to the attempt.

Tons of the new baggage screeners at the airports are convicted felons, the screeners will not stop and search a single person who looks middle eastern for fear of the "profiling" lawsuits, Newark has stopped requiring you to show Identification when boarding, only when you go through the metal detectors. (It is obviously impossible to steal another passengers ticket once you have gone through the metal detectors)

Meanwhile Capitol hill is passing more and more laws that do nothing more than greatly infringe on the rights of law abiding citizens, and scream to high heaven that Janet Jackson has breasts so it is time for more censorship.

Not a single piece of legislation since 9/11 has done anything to lessen the likelyhood of another terrorist attack, it is simply more ways to control the masses.

Jeff, I'm with you on this.

Btw, exactly what idiot first decided to label information gathering as the term: "intelligence"? Whoever it was I hope it was done sardonically.

I agree on that...

In answer to your question, though, it's you. They don't always know what these guys look like; and we can't have any 'racial profiling', can we?
