Brian's Song even though it wasn't really a "sports movie".

I first thought of Rudy but gotta go with Rocky.

Close between Slap Shot and Bull Durham
I was also pleasantly surprised by The Rookie (the Dennis Quaid movie, not the Robert Redford one, though that is a great flick too)

Let me be a little more specifiic... All American studio flicks.

I just find it interesting that nobody named one non-American film. I guess most Americans just watch whatever over-hyped, big budget garbage is served up to them in their local megaplexes.

I watch a lot of foreign films, but I have to admit I've not watched a "sports" themed one. As Michael said, please enlighten us (and not just Aussie flicks, since apparently liking movies from the country you live in is blase) - Netflix awaits. :P

Remember The Titans. Probably my favourite sports movie of all time, but one of my favourite movies in general, too.

For joe. Hmm. Foreign sports films. I watched Australian Rules last night. Was pretty good. Mostly about racism, though. Mean Machine, starring Vinny Jones is also fantastic. Can't really think of many great sporting films to be honest.

Look at the top 20 movies in Australia right now. That's a pretty heavy dose of Hollywood. News for ya, Joe. American movies form the baseline for much of the world.

Completely subjective and also not the point.

What Joe should have said is "I guess most people just watch whatever over-hyped, big budget garbage is served up to them in their local megaplexes". His prejudice prevents him.

I think you missed the point, or maybe I just wasn't clear.

Sure we watch the same over-hyped, big budget garbage... mostly. But when Americans watch American films they are watching films about their own culture and lifestyle. When Australians watch American films, as familiar as we might be with American popular culture, they are still essentially foreign films. I would be worried about Australia if we only watched movies about ourselves. It's a little too insular for my liking. The rest of the world knows America is obsessed with it's own culture. I often wonder why. Maybe you can enlighten me.

Why do Americans feel more comfortable watching films about themselves do you think?

Are you saying that Americans predominantly watch American films because they are over-hyped and big budget but Australians watch them because they like "foreign films"? That can easily be proven wrong. Where are all the French, Japanese, and Italian films in that Australian box office top 20? They're not there. Why? Because Australians are watching over-hyped and big budget American films just like Americans are.

By the same extension of your logic, are you going to tell me that the Australian box office 20 proves Australians are more obsessed with American culture than their own? Come on, Joe. We can both read that "In America" is the 20th most popular film in Australia right now. It's not even in the top 20 here.

I have to admit, while there are some good American movies, I really love foreign films. The actors look real instead of having undergone years of reconstructive surgery, the acting is better, and there's just more "heart" in them - all IMHO of course. :okthumb:

Then again, there are always the Bollywood movies which seem to be the exact same movies rehashed to me!

Yeah, they say that there are only 4 movie scripts in the world or something like that, well Bollywood only knows about 1 of them

Foreign films are as different as they are many, just like the Hollywood ones. I bet you that the % of good foreign films, looking at the total number of them, is just the same as the % of good Hollywood films.
The thing is that we only ever hear about the good foreign films, rarely do they promote bad foreign films exet in the country they were made in (although I've seen my fare share of bad foreign films...). But Bad Hollywood films still get over promoted, so a lot of people think that all that comes out of Hollywood is automatically garbage. Which of course is not true
