This does not make sense to me. Could someone explain why the NFL would do this?

LAS VEGAS, NV, January 30
NFL puts damper on Vegas Super Bowl party
Email to a Friend Printer Friendly Version

Big screen TV's are causing a problem for a Las Vegas casino planning a Super Bowl party.

The NFL has sent a letter to the Palms Hotel Casino over an advertisement.

The Palms planned a super-sized party for Super Bowl Sunday, with the game to be shown on theater-sized big screens. But the NFL is barring the casino from showing the game on the big screens.

Jim Hughes is the General Manager of the Palms Hotel. He says it is all about copyright laws. "Copyright laws that the National Football League is quoting allows us to show it on big screen TV's up to 55 inches in diagonal. However, forbids showing it on any kind of a screen larger than that or any kind of commercial screen."

More than 600 tickets had been sold for the Palms Super Bowl party. The hotel is now refunding the money and offering a free Super Bowl party to those who had tickets, with the game on 130 regular-sized screens.

Yup

this is why the NFL, MLB, etc. have all those disclaimers on their broadcasts...

the NFL have gone after sports bars for the same thing....selling tickets to see the game on TV....

The Palms should have known better or at least inquired about a broadcasting license...

Right I understand the thought, especially with sportsbars using sat to bring in differetn feeds for games into one bar.

However, if the game is on local TV, broadcasting by a local channel, why could not anyone air it on whatever TVs they want?

You would think the NFL would want as many eyeballs watching SuperBowl to increase advertising of it. The Palms are charging people money for food, drinks, other entertainment, and the game will be on at the same time.

This is not like me going to a sportbar in NO to watch a NO home game when stadium is not sold out and by-passing the blackout.

I am its biggest fan. :-)

But it seems to me something that is there for everyone, broadcasting on normal TV which is the air, across the entire country should be free. It is actually as long as its not on TV's larger then 55 inches.
