Who was/is the best musical artist in the world?

..and I'm not talking about deaf piano players. Something modern please. :)

I think my inner communist votes for Lennon. I dig the music still.

How do you qualify best?

I don't think there can be a best, you may have favorites, what reaches to you

That's one of the the things that gets me about musical appreciation, when you try to name the "best" whatever - there is no best, just what moves you and hits your groove so to speak

That other thing that cracks me up is when someone will say so and so musician is terrible and they suck - just because you don't care for their musical stylings doesn't mean they lack talent

You'll find great players in every genre of music

For my personal favorite .... Aerosmith - they're everything a rock band should be - great guitar sound, catchy turn of phrase of lyrics, big drum sound, solid bottom end and they've lived an um ... interesting life

and they opened up the NFL season this year and they are opening the Super Bowl in 10 days

and this thread shows why it's about personal taste
While I can appreciate the contributions and talent of John Lennon
I don't care for the music of Lennon or the Beatles

Sorry, but even though he tried to disqualify Beethoven i gotta agree with Buff! :o What he did was simply amazing! :okthumb:

If he had asked who was the best rock and roll artist or some such thing then I might feel compelled to say something different like Elvis! :rokk: But he didn't.

This is Oprano -- if someone asks for you to name anyone but X, X will be named -- although surprisingly, not first in this case, which is unusual.

Hendrix could play a mean tune.

Led Zep wrote some pretty impressive songs.

J.S.Bach could wack out a superb organ riff.

and Animal from the muppets wins hands down on the drums.

How do you qualify "best"? what is the criteria?

Because you enjoy their work more than others?

Is there a technical criteria?

Agree totally about it being personal taste - I'm one who loves Lennon AND Aerosmith and throw a bit of Skynard, Eagles, AC/DC, & Johnny Cash into the mix. (ok, so I'm a 'music mutt' - I admit it lol)

But ya know, NO ONE I've ever heard can belt out a scream (screech?) like Steven Tyler - I will recognize that voice when I'm 90 and damn near deaf - no doubt. And much of what my generation calls 'classic' (whether it's rock or country) is being heard and appreciated by our kids.

I have one kid who thinks Aerosmith & Toby Keith should rule the world, another kid who thinks it should be Britney Spears, Shania & Journey and a third who can't decide if it should be Eminem, Queen or Chicago.

Ok, I'm raising music mutts too lmao

In the modern department, when we're talking creative musical geniuses, I would have to say:

Trent Reznor
Beck
and
The Beastie Boys

honorable mention to Billy Corgan

One of their common trait is originality and diversity.

Nice try ....

.... but then how do you measure the body of work produced by Bach to the body of work produced by The Rolling Stones

Both are influential

and when asking "best" - personal taste seems to mean a lot to many

example - some one may find John Coltrane works amazing while someone who is not a Jazz aficionado wouldn't care for his work and wouldn't consider Coltrane the best

(Coltrane being used as an example, there are many Jazz greats - including many largely unknown players - see the players working everyday in the French Quarter, there's a woman who does scat and plays clarinet and she absolutely blows me away every time I hear her - and she's playing for next to nothing and has immense talent)

See Ella Fitzgerald .... he he he

One of my favorite recordings of her is Ella doing "Mack the Knife" live in Berlin and she forgets the words and has to ad-lib and scat out of the song - really nice piece

I have to confess that I'm also a music mutt like Snoops. My tastes are frighteningly varied, but the ONLY music I can't seem to warm up to is jazz, though there are SOME (and by SOME I mean a handful) jazz songs I can sit through. But scat just bores me to tears. :(

Vick

Peaches - good example of why I say it comes down to taste,

if I'm cooking dinner for friends I load the CD player with Jazz and a few other cool things - Usually Winton Marseilles, John Coltrane and then some Ella and Frank

I might throw Me First and the Gimme Gimmes in for a change of pace, also have a CD of a string quartet doing all the songs from Alanis Morrissette Jagged Little Pill CD - interesting dinner music

But if I'm going out the car is cranked to guitar based, slightly blues influenced Rock n Roll

Sure doesn't... just ask Ned Beatty... :o

And on the subject on the thread... one of the ways I interpret
quality of music, is how well the music can transend its original
"genre"... Right now I have 3 versions of Pink Floyd's "Dark Side
of the Moon"... the original, a reggae version called "Dub Side
of the Moon" released last year, and a symphonic version called
"Us and Them", with about 2/3's of the album on that one...

What do you mean by the question?

"Best" as in "my favorite"?
"Best" as in "most influential"?
"Best" as in "most popular"?
"Best" as in "appreciated by the most musicians"?
Any of the above.
Although since we're not doing scientific research here, I originally intended this to be 'your favorite' musician thread, and my poorly chosen words made this thread into something else.

John Lennon was a musical genius who also changed the world.

I can't think of anyone else who managed that.

The Beatles body of work is unmatched to this day. They are a classic example of where the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.

Bah, I don't think you can have one 'best' musical artist - they're all so different and talented in so many ways.
I think a better question would be who has made huge contributions or influences...
Hank Williams (Sr.) drove so many of the country musicians you hear today. Garth Brooks took a nearly dying genre and catapulted it back to the top. While women like Dolly Parton (bless her heart, I love her to death) and Patsy Cline made huge inroads in country, Shania Twain really blew country wide open for female artists with a more modern style.

Duran Duran took a fledgling video music industry and power-jumped it into the monster it is today.

Elvis was a cross-breed rock-country genius who moved both genres forward from goody-two-shoes happy-happy sit-still-and-watch songs to something so energetic and emotional you couldn't sit still and everyone from your great-grandmom to your 15-yr old daughter thought he walked on water... not to mention the breakthroughs he made for all artists with nothing more than a shake of his hips (or would that be a hilarious pinkie-finger dancing?hehe) :P

Aerosmith is by far the only rock n roll band who has identified with EVERY generation for the past 40 freaking years and they're still going strong, still putting out new top-ten material and bringing the house down in live shows.

Metallica showed the world that heavy metal is more than just noise, those boys were brought up on classical music and opera and the influences are strong in their music; as evidenced so beautifully by the classical symphonies who play their songs (one of my favorites is Carol of the Bells w/ Metallica and the Tran-Siberia orchestra).

The Beatles of course get a standing ovation for bringing rock-n-roll to the American youth; sure R&R was around before that but even artists like Chuck Berry were "daddy's music".

2Pac *does* get props in my eyes, he took the soulful R&B sound and moved it into something that the youth could identify with - yeah Barry White and Marvin Gaye were serious figureheads in R&B but again, that was "daddy's music"; 2Pac along with LLCool J and Kool Moe Dee gave the youth their own sound. Too bad fuckheads like Eminem had to come along and ruin it.

And it just goes on and on and on....
I'm one of those musical mutts as well, although I prefer "eclectic to the extreme", LOL.
My favorite memories will be sitting in front of the record player all day and all night long as a kid with me, mom, and dad all fighting over which 45 would go in next... we'd hop from Charlie Rich to Elton John to Jefferson Airplane to Rush to Loretta Lynn to David Bowie to the Statler Bros to Rod Stewart to Neil Diamond to the soundtrack from Cats... starting at about 11am on a Saturday and finally ending around 3am Sunday morning.
And of course going to see Elvis live in concert and coming home with two black eyes because Mom had her hands on the binoculars and she was shaking so badly, lol. :)

Ok can go for favorite .......

While I can recognize the contributions the Beatles made I find their music boring and ignorant and they basically killed raw 50's sounding rock and roll (think Chuck Berry) - actually the Beatles started out with that type sound

Glad there was teh Rolling Stones to be the counterpoint to the Beatles

Who the hell could dance to Strawberry Fields? Who cares about Lucy in the Sky? Fucking doper song - yuck

But the distortion in Back in the USSR was cool

and if all you need is love try eating a love sandwich when you're starving

Give me guitar based blues oriented raw sound music any day

and I also have very diverse tastes
Everything from Ella and Frank and Wynton Marsalis through classical to the New York Dolls over to the Sex Pistols into Mary Prankster and all points inbetween

Elvis Rules

Aerosmth is the quintessential rock n roll band

David Bowie pushed boundaries and is still brilliant

LA Sleaze Metal was a lot of fun - nothing succeed like excess - Faster Pussycat, LA Guns, Poison - tons of make up, hot girls in short skirts, fast cars, faster women - life before AIDS

Used to be sex, drugs and rock n roll - then it turned into aids, crack and techno

Guns-n-Roses should be slapped daily - they could have been one of the greatest rock bands ever but chronic assholism fucked them up

There are so many other artist and bands I'm forgetting

Missing in the thread is Zeppelin.

I like a lot of the jazz/fusion guys but they certainly have smaller audiences. Al Dimeola. Holdsworth. McLaughlin.
