The computing industry will up the ante on its consumer bet this week, as Microsoft, Hewlett-Packard and other tech stalwarts head to Las Vegas for the Consumer Electronics Show.

CES, the main trade show for producers of high-tech gadgets and once primarily a showcase for hi-fi components and clock radios, has become increasingly dominated in recent years by companies more typically associated with business technology.

The 2004 edition of the show, which runs Thursday through Saturday, will be no exception, as companies ranging from Linux distributors to chip designers compete for a chunk of the growing consumer gadget business.

Microsoft kicks off the festivities with a pre-show speech Wednesday by Chairman Bill Gates, who is expected to push an up-close-and-personal version of the "seamless computing" message he delivered earlier at the Comdex trade show.

Key consumer elements of the strategy include several technologies Gates unveiled at last year's Comdex but Microsoft has yet to deliver into the marketplace. Watches based on Smart Personal Object Technology (SPOT) will display weather forecasts, sports scores, e-mail and other data transmitted over a wireless service run as part of Microsoft's MSN family.

That *would* be the perfect dovetail. Figure out what you wanna sell at Internext, then go to CES and find the latest cutting-edge way to sell it.
I haven't seen anyone say they're going to it though, I have seen some folks say they're staying for the AVN awards.

I'm thinking about going this weekend as its only $75 to get in at the door but I dont have anyone to go with. Walking around alone without anyone to point out the cool shit to is much less fun. :)

We had tix to CES but ended up leaving early. A little late for this year, but for those who want to make plans for this year - folks who register early online (before the holidays) can get FREE passes to the show.

It's definitely a cool follow-up to Internext and usually happens @ the same time every year. :okthumb:

For anyone attending CES.. please stop by Real Networks booth and ask for their PR person so they can tell you the corporate spin, i mean position that Real has with Acacia.

Send me an email (brandon at fightthepatent.com) So i can post for others to share. If you see Apple or Microsoft, ask them the same question.

thanks.

I so wanted to go once I found out it was there. But alas, I did not have the money to stay.
