View Full Version : Where Should I Move?

I'm sick of PA. They just raised income taxes by 30% and also raised every other tax you can think of. I'm thinking about NC since I really like it there. Forget CA, I hate that state. SD is the only area that is even reasonably enjoyable but it costs a fortune to live there.

Is it obvious I'm not in a good mood tonight?

Don't spose it ever occurred to you that perhaps you should live with your wife? :P

If you're gonna move, move someplace that doesn't have state income tax.

Lessee, that would be Florida, Alaska, Nevada, Washington, South Dakota and Wyoming. Anyone know of others? Tennessee and New Hampshire do not have state "income" tax, but they do tax money you make from interest and dividends.

I think she prefers me being a long way away from her. ;)

Mike, Florida is another option. I'm dead serious about getting out of this place. You wouldn't believe the tax increases that are being passed around here. They just put a 46% tax on parking. Talk about a confiscatory tax...

Live in AK for a year and you will receive a dividend, usually around 1k or more a year ;)

What are you looking for in a place to live?

You want warmer weather, milder summers/winters, tax breaks, accessibility to specific things like beaches or ski slopes or I'd imagine golf courses?

North Carolina is a great place for having a variety of things to do -- you're no more than a few hours drive from skiing or beach no matter where you live and the place is full of golf. It's also got three fairly major airports which make getting places pretty simple depending upon where you live.
On the downside, you get ice, snow (in most places), huge bugs and shitloads of humidity in the summer. That's the reasons I left there.

Some parts of Florida have a high cost of living, comparable to alot of Cali, so you might want to think about that as well.

I'd go to one of those real estate sites where they have those profile pages and you can fill out whats important to you and it will make suggestions based on your answers.

Hubby asked me what this site was earlier and I thought he was going to post it, wonder why he didn't...
http://www.findyourspot.com

It's one of those sites KK was talking about. Really neat and some of the questions get really targeted so it can help you. We went through and had each of the immediate family members and a couple of good friends take the questionnaire about two years ago to see if there was one spot we could all agree on. It was cool!

That was cool! It actually even gave me 2 places in Alaska. :P None in the South AT ALL (well, except VA, but too many northerners live there to consider it the south any more :awinky:). Odd. Mostly Wisconsin, Vermont, Oregon.

Driving home on Christmas night and then again tonight - from two different angles - the lights of my little town were lighting up the sky. Too much development now - time for me to move. :(

So did mine - I wonder if there are only certain places which are serviced by RE agents which pay to have their markets recommended.

Mine brought up La Pointe Wisconsin - population 250 and Eagle River Wisconsin - population 1440. :purpdance:

Elkhorn was iffy at 7300

Also Ft. Atkinson Wisconsin, but too many people at 14K. :(

I also limited my housing costs to $180K or so - if I'm going to live in the middle of no where, I'm not going to pay a lot to do it. :okthumb:

Wilmington, NC is pretty high on my list. It's only about an hour north of Myrtle Beach. I also have a buddy that is the greenskeeper at one of the courses and his son works at another. Can you say free golf? :)

Probably won't be moving for at least 6 months but I'm thinking it's time to go unless some unbelievably great offer comes up around here. (which is doubtful)

We have some absolutely phenominal small towns here in Wisconsin. I'm willing to bet you would absolutely LOVE Door County!! :okthumb: (that's the peninsula part by Lake Michigan) I'm adjusting to my new town but I gotta admit I miss my old one. <_<

Enforcer, can you tell us more about Wisconsin?

I have heard it is very much like Oregon, only colder in
the winter.

If you have the money, the perfect place is just north
of San Francisco. You get views, great weather, great
people, and minutes from the city.

I like Nevada myself, I'm planning to move there from Arizona soon.
I was born in Las Vegas, but grew up around Phoenix AZ.
And I can tell you Arizona has changed a lot.
Much less services, there used to be plenty of parks and roadside rests and places to go fishing and camping, hunting... but nowadays it seems everything is off-limits or too expensive, the state taxes are ridiculous...
and everything is much more expensive in AZ, insurance is an example and hard to get even you can afford it.

And it seems everyone in the state Arizona government has an ax to grind...

(I had someone in the state tax division threatened to shut my business down over a matter of 4 cents, I politely explained while I lived 140 miles away, I could be in their office in approximately three hours and I would like to speak with their supervisor at that time because all my phone calls are automatically recorded and I didn't appreciate being threatened)

PS automatic telephone recording equipment is a must for living in AZ.

Nevada has no state tax...
no morals of the community laws in most places to worry about.. (Important in this business)
much cheaper auto licenses and insurance...
cheaper real estate, most of Arizona is off-limits.
But most of Nevada still up for grabs.
And much less bureaucratic hassle :D

NV is a bit too far away. Reno looks like a great place. Lots of great skiing nearby and plenty of golf as well. I'm going to FL in February and I'm going to look around a bit down there. Warm weather is fine but it's a little TOO warm there for my tastes in the summer.

If you think it's too warm in the summer, just wait until it's winter and your body is throwing you for a loop because it's expecting at least *some* change of the season that it's not getting.
It's like being in the twilight zone... you know something is wrong, but you can't put your finger on it, and meanwhile you're getting more cranky and impatient by the day.

If you're used to a winter, then a sudden move to Florida honestly will screw with you big time. Better to do it gradually - either move to a warmer climate that still has *some* sort of seasonal change before going to FL full time, or do the snowbird thing to get yourself used to it.

It's odd...
I took the quiz; and the response included all the places in Texas that I have lived except Waco and Houston. The Rio Grande Valley (2 cities), Port Arthur, Corpus Christi, etc. In fact, the only places listed in Texas were places I had lived before. :D

I never pass up an opportunity to talk up Wisconsin!! It's just a great state to live in. The people are extremely friendly and although we don't have any cities bigger than Milwaukee there is still plenty of "big city" stuff in the state. Plenty of small and medium sized cities to make people who want to raise kids very happy and very comfortable! :okthumb: A great school system (other than many of the Milwaukee schools though the schools in the suburbs of Milwaukee are quite good) It's a diverse state politically and there are areas where a hard right winger and a hard left leaning liberal would feel right at home as well as places both can live comfortably together!! :P Some of the best hunting, fishing, camping, saling, and other outdoor activies you could ever ask for. And of course the greatest, and most unique, professional sports team on the planet the Green Bay Packers!! :wnw:
