According the info I was given this puzzle is attributed to Albert Einstein and that 98% of the people in the world could not figure it out. (Very odd since there is a 20% chance of guessing right, but I'll assume he meant people who did not know would say that instead of guessing).

Anyways, it took me a bit over an hour.

You can either look the answer up online (if you're impatient) or I'll post the answer later tonight if anyone is interested.

<------------------------------------------------------------------->
There are 5 houses in 5 different colors.
In each house lives a person with a different nationality.
The 5 owners drink a certain type of beverage, smoke a certain brand of cigar, and keep a certain pet. No owners have the same pet smoke the same brand of cigar of drink the same beverage.

WHO OWNS THE FISH??

Hints:

The Brit lives in the red house.
The Swede keeps dogs as pets.
The Dane drinks tea.
The green house is on the left of the white house.
The green house owner drinks coffee.
The person who smokes Pall Mall rears birds.
The owner of the yellow house smokes Dunhill.
The man living in the center house drinks milk.
The Norwegian lives in the first house.
The man who smokes Blends lives next to the one who keeps cats.
The man who keeps the horse lives next to the man who smokes Dunhill.
The owner who smokes Blue-Master drinks beer.
The German smokes Prince.
The Norwegian lives next to the blue house.
The man who smokes Blends has a neighbor who drinks water.

I just wasted an hour of my life and now I feel less intelligent than i did before reading this thread.

Thanks Fat Pad. :grrr:

Edit - I'm going to hang out at GFY for a little while so I can feel superior. My ego is bruised.

It took me thirty minutes total.
The German, in the 4th house, that is green, he drinks coffee and smokes Prince. I hope Prince appreciates that. :biglaugh:

Not going to look at the answers.

I did this puzzle five or ten years ago, and whatever it was, got the right answer. Likewise, took just over an hour.

Going to try it again and see it I got any stupider (or faster).

Did I miss something?

Is it possible that no one owns a fish?

Reading the information, never is the question asked who owns a fish nor is it said that anyone owns a fish and you must find out whom

So ergo it is possible that the German could own a Parrot or an Orangutan or .....

....... a goat

and is that why 98% of people get the question wrong?

he he he he

Edit - also fish is never mentioning in the description - i.e. the man in the red house lives next to the man who has a fish

I started to do it on paper, then curiosity got the better of me and I scrolled down... and just scratched everything out once I saw that Hubby had answered. No need in both of us doing it, lol. :)

Excel is the best..

I started using different colored shaded backgrounds to help with the possibilities.

Good puzzle!
