Animal rights advocates will single out small children at performances of ``The Nutcracker'' in the next few weeks by handing out fliers saying ``Your Mommy Kills Animals'' to youngsters whose mothers are wearing fur.

``Children can't look up to a mom in a battered-raccoon hat or a crushed coyote collar,'' said Ingrid Newkirk, president of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. ``Maybe when they're confronted by their own children's hurt looks, fur-wearers' cold hearts will melt.''

The fliers include a color drawing of a woman plunging a large bloody knife into the belly of a terrified rabbit. The fliers urge kids to ``ask your mommy how many dead animals she killed to make her fur clothes.

``And the sooner she stops wearing fur, the sooner the animals will be safe. Until then, keep your doggie or kitty friends away from mommy - she's an animal killer.''

Brookline child psychologist Dr. Carolyn Newberger called the tactics ``terribly dangerous to children.''

``It's using children in the worst possible way,'' she said. ``If (the activists) want to legitimately work to protect animals from destruction for fashion, they have every right to. But to do so by targeting children and making them feel their mothers are murderers is absolutely unconscionable.''

Lisa Franzetta, a national coordinator for PETA, said the group will launch its ``fur-ocious'' protest at `Nutcracker' performances in as many as 20 cities across the United States.

Franzetta, who is based in California, said yesterday she did not yet know when the protests will begin in Boston, where ``The Nutcracker'' is playing at the Wang Center for the Performing Arts in the Theater District.

Franzetta acknowledged the anti-fur campaign might spark a backlash. ``It's definitely provocative, I will give you that,'' she said.

Wang Center officials could not be reached for comment about the planned protests.

Pfft. Kids aren't going to give a shit about that. It would be far more effective if the fliers said something along the lines of

"Your mother killed Bambi"

I call out to all members of the Other PETA
(That's People Eating Tasty Animals)

To Protest this Protest we should show up with Racks of Ribs, Lamb Kabobs, Filets, Buffalo Wings and Pulled Pork Bar-B-Que and let the savory scents saunter over to the Other PETA's protesting Waifs

How long until they cave in and BEG us to put our meat in their mouths

PETA is nothing more than a terrorist orgainization, looking to impose their opinion on those that dont want it....

Attempting to use children to turn on their parents is low even by their standards...

typical "the end justifies the means" behavior of extremists.

I stoped buying fur, when I saw how Chinese people were skinning german shepherds alive to sell their fur as "wild fox" and other animal names in the US and Europe... Alot of people are walking around with some poor german shepherd - dunno if I should post a link to some pictures from China and how they skin their german shepherds alive - do not want to kill any happy toughts people have about their fur...

I dont think the issue is about 'fur'.....

As much as I personally dispise PETA, they have a right to their opinion on that, or anything else, for that matter...

The issue is the use of terrorist tactics, and extremist measures, ESPECIALLY those involving children and their relationship with their parents, to impose their views on others....

I agree that the PETA is using their resources wrong, however I can understand their frustration trying to get a message thru, when people either do not belive the message or do not want to hear it.

Seems to me that the material described (woman plunging a knife into the belly of a rabbit, etc) could be easily labeled as "adult or mature material".

Exposing kids to it could easily be pulled in under COPA.........

i agree. it has nothing to do with fur at all. it has to do with fringe lunatics finding some means of self expression. if they did not have fur, it would be a bizarre fight against imprisoning bees and forcing them into labor where they are exploited for their honey or some stupid shit.

we need people like those in PETA to remind us all of just how normal we are, what behaviors are appropriate and innapropriate, to define the boundaries of acceptable behavior and to use as an example of the idiocy of extremism.

If I was taking one of my kids to see the Nutcracker and someone passed these fliers to my kids, I would be very tempted to instill a little physical harm unto them. I don't agree with skinning animals for their fur, but this is just way out of line! Children have enough problems with the world today without these thoughts of their mother's being murderers being put in their head. The mother is the person the child trusts the most, and now what will the child think of her?

I would be tempted too. Too be just as absurd as them though, I might also consider a law suite for knowingly and purpousely exposing my children to matterial that could cause them phsycological damage. Who knows, with the right lawyer, I might just win.
