what is the plan B?

if you are under 50 and think to answer RETIRE-
think again,
it's not as much fun as you think to do for the rest of your life...

I'd start selling drugs and underground porn movies on a streetcorner.

This is an issue I beleive a lot of people have been thinking about, because it is going to be a reality for many people. Not necessarily on Jan 1st, but probbaly in 2004.

I am going to grow citrus and pecans on my land and set up a street vending operation! haha

Seriously, I am fortunate to have a few options. DirectNIC continues to grow exponentially, and there are some great opportunities there.

I also have a few other side businesses that if the time came open I could devote more to, and would make some nice $$.

In a pinch I could always go take the bar and practice law. Though it would have to be on my terms, or else I would be pretty misserable.... but the good thing about being an attorney is you get to pass your misery on to other people! :D

Myself, I'd like to continue along the path I've been on and further my career as an Illusionist

Already to that end I'm considering taking some time to further hone my skills performing for different crowds

If economic conditions dictated I could always go back to being a marketing director but that is long, challenging work without a lot of enjoyment

Well, I own a mainstream business which is doing well enough, and I have been investing both in it and in my retirement accounts with the money I am making here. So if it all went away tomorrow, I would just put that time and energy into the mainstream biz. Plus I am working on a couple mainstream net projects as well, so if they take off even better. :)

I want to try writing some more. I have an edge in that I've been published before. I haven't written much in the past 2 years but I've recently started again. I have an original idea for a book/movie that I've started working on. I'll bet Serge will never see it because it involves football. :)

Could always go back to the mundane world of programming/design as well. Loved programming, hated working for idiots.

My other gig is ebay. I'm getting pretty good at selling on there and I would like to find something unique to sell on there that I could repeat over and over again. My neighbor makes his living selling cheap clocks on ebay. He's going to get hit with a copyright infringement suit soon if he isn't careful. He rips off logos like chevy, bmw, porsche, ford, etc. and puts them on clocks. His attitude is that he's going to do it until someone makes him stop. I have a feeling he's going to get a wake up call soon but then again he's been doing it for 5 years and no one has bothered him yet.

If the biz ended January first my concern would not be income, it would be boredom and driving my new wife crazy. I have saved up a nice stash over the years.

I would love to buy a house in cabo, and just fish, and relax. But do not think my wife would be too keen on that. So I would probably get into some real estate ventures, and possibly go to law school.

In reality though, this business is not going to just dissappear one day. Many eggs, in many baskets. If all I did was sell fresh photos, I would be living in a trailer these days.

About Vegas -
Putting 2 silk handkerchiefs knotted together down a woman's shirt and then pulling them out with a bra attached between the silks isn't as impressive when most of the women there aren't wearing a shirt :D or maybe it would be

The S&M/B&D crowd might not be impressed with me escaping from chains and locks - they'd probably want me to stay restrained he he he

Actually one of the things I'm considering is renting a place in the French Quarter or Faubourg Marigny (want to be walking distance to Jackson Square) and performing as a street magician in Jackson Square for 6 months to a year

That will give me the opportunity to further hone my skills (mostly presentation - work psychologically for bigger, stronger reactions) with different crowds - kind of along the lines of what David Blaine did - only he did it in New York

Of course the move after that is to get more exposure

Billy pulling down his pants and dancing to "We are Family" is such a great tradition - worth it just to see Billy carrying on the full moon tradition :yowsa:

As with alot of people who posted here, I'd be doing my mainstream stuff as well....brick and mortar and also Internet related. I think I'd die if I couldn't do at least SOMETHING internet related...hahaha

I already have a brick and mortar going (mainstream) and it's doing alright....something I love doing which is important.

I also agree that it won't disappear overnight....or at all....it will just morph into something different. ;)

i think i'd be sad, the adult biz has been such a great learning environment.

but realistically i dont see it going away, just evolving.. and adult webmasters are like cockroaches... we just go skittering across the floor to the next meal ticket. look at that atherton character. he's running the paris hilton scam right now after losing many many merchant accounts. i hear he's doing upwards of 8000 joins a day right now and he's billing each customer 200 bucks. fuckers making 1.6mil a day right now. he'll get shut down.. and find another way to make a quickbuck (no pun intended)

i personally have a software biz that is already making millions and a wine distributorship that is doing very well also, so i'm not worried about flipping burgers for a living.

Well I've got a large portfolio of domains acquired now. Half adult, half mainstream.

2004 forward I'm putting more focus on mainstream anyway. That's were the big money has always been and will always be if you know how to work it well.

Also working on a lot of technology projects.

Adult's always been just a side biz for me over the past 20 years, so nothing really changing in that respect. I've always believed in staying diversified.

I might finally get around to updating all of my personal and mainstream sites. They need it badly.
I've actually been slowly getting rid of my online mainstream biz - hosting. I stopped taking new clients a while ago and now am just waiting for my current clients to either outgrow me or not need hosting anymore. Only have a few left. I'm just tired of supporting them.

Most likely I'd pull out my clay and start selling miniatures on eBay. Might write up a few more ebooks and sell those as well - people can't get enough how-to info!

Well, I already have a headstart....... at retiring, with toys to play with.

I still have my real estate license, but selling R.E. is not as much fun as it was in the 70s. I have always bought and sold real estate..... if done correctly, it's the best investment you can make. AT ONE TIME, I had 35 rental units, but not up for that anymore. I went into 2003 owning 4 properties, with any luck, I will end it, only owning two. whether Adult hold up or not - I will always invest in Real Estate - Adult just allows me to buy bigger Real estate.....

I'm a professional mainstream photographer as well as doing adult-related stuff, so I think I'd just shift my focus back to mainstream stuff and push it. The money is there I just prefer the adult stuff.... It's a much less competative environment, amazingly enough.

This thought has been on my mind since I went on a party boat in Clearwater last year.

Hoping to do this in about 10 years, if the porn biz is still going strong or not

Would be VERY happy to spend 8 hours a day on a fishing boat, better yet, be able to say "I am working :D

What KK said about payment processing.

I think this is a huge market that is always going to be there.

ACH, credit cards, stored value cards, wires, WITH value add... there is a demand for all of it.

For our core focus (ACH), check conversion, truncation, imaging, RCK, ARC and direct deposit payroll.

Check 21, which goes into effect in Sept 04, is going to revolutionize the way banks process paper checks.

JR

i think there are many people in the adult biz that would do fine no matter what happened. i believe success is the result of character, personality, determination and willingness to identify and accept appropriate risks as well as accept failure and quickly move on to the next venture with the same zeal and enthusiasm as the first. those traits will exist in some individuals with or without porn and they will still be successful at anything they do.

there are also many more in this business that would be flipping burgers by the end of the week if this biz stopped.

I'd return to either brokering futures and options, or doing mortgage loans; I'd also begin to write my book, tentatively titled "From Altar Boy to Porn Star"-----I just need a "retirment" point as a boundary for the stuff that will go into the book; otherwise, I'll have to include a post-death add-on where I'll name names of some scumbags!

Though I want to continue performing, retirement would give me the time to start writing!!!

I woundn't do a damn thing. Fuck work, fuck the machine and the tacit agreement with the power structure. Count my happy ass on some beach in South America or on some island: Indonesia- Bali, Java, and Sumatra Mentawais, Nias, Hinakos. I'd fish, sleep and do the real kind of surfing. Any monkey can push a button on a keyboard, not every monkey can drop into a 20+ ft. wave.

Kill the deus ex machina...stranger than fiction thing is that this discription is exactly what I'm going to do, burningbush pornarmageddon or not; 5 years and flame on, I'm gone.

After a few years sebatical, I'll probably start some sort of mainstream/ Adult Webmaster Tours Co. Company retreats, team building exercises, pretty three panel color brochure, coconuts with the tops lopped off to recieve the pineapple juice, rum and ice, bamboo umbrellas..."Be somebody"

I'd strap on the tools and go build some decks or something...
