I was just joking about Greg! He says nothing but nice things about you and is a complete suck-up bitch. Keep him on, please.

Why are you in such a hatchet mood anyway? You just got married and spent a week on a honeymoon - you should be the happiest you've ever been and nothing should bother you. :)

better to fire them before the holidays so they can budget their spending wisely.

i just had to let somebody go a few days ago and it was hard, but i gave him a good severance package and 30 days notice and while i know he's disappointed, i dont think he harbors any ill will cause i did it *right*.

If however this employee is reading to much espn... fire him on the 24th, no notice and $1.00 in severance. Or as Kinky Friedman says... "Fuck em & Feed em Fruit Loops!"

I let 2 people go 2 weeks ago... had no moral problem with it, and so far sales are looking good for December :)

Why not just tie them to a tree, and shoot them?

Much less painful.

Then donate on their behalf, tax deductible.

I'd say if you do let him go, do it before christmas so he can take the majority of his gifts back and get that debt off of his back, and give him a month's severance pay. That way he'll still have time to find a job in time to pay the bills even though folks are going to be taking so much time off for christmas, new year's, and Internext.

Brad - does the employee deserve to be terminated?
If so what does any Holiday have to do with due process of termination?

It's the difference between having employees that just clock in and do their time, and having employees that will go the extra mile for you because they know they're more to you than a number.

You had a key phrase there though - due process. Has this employee been warned, verbally and on paper? (In Texas I think it isn't necessary to do that though. It's still good practice nonetheless.)

Brad - allow me to properly answer your original question.

Q. Is it bad karma to fire someone right before Xmas?

A. No, it is not. It IS bad karma to fire someone ON Xmas, not before.

Some may think its tacky to "release employees of obligations" near the holidays, but the buddha does not.

Which year were you laid off? I beat a couple of those, then I left the company and went to Broadwing and wound up getting laid off before Thanksgiving a few years ago. I was with MCI for years and they laid off a lot of people a few times. When I was in engineering I remember people just walking out with boxes seemed like the office was just empty when they did it too.

This was back in 1986 (I'm old :awinky: ). It worked out great - my boss was really pissed off that MCI was doing it and instead of making sure we were escorted out the door with only our personal belongings, he loaded up boxes of business supplies for us and helped us carry it to our cars. In addition, he AND his boss gave us letterhead, told us to write our own recommendation letters and signed them. :P

I received 3 months severance including insurance and had a job with Sprint w/in a few days which didn't start until after the first of the year, so I had a nice 3 week paid vacation. B)

MCI actually called about a month later offering me job back - at a one grade lower payscale, lol!

If someone needs to be fired for cause, cover your ass, follow procedure to stay out of trouble with the local department of labor and fire their ass without regard to when it is. They did it to themselves, they have it coming...

If it's a cost reducing move or eliminating of a position due to changing business conditions or however you want to phrase it and not due to the performance of the worker...well that's a different story. That's no fault of the worker, that's the fault of the President and CEO, buck stops at the top. I'd probably wait before impacting a family at Christmas if at all possible and would probably try to provide some severence.

But more importantly, what do you do for your employees who do bust their ass all year long at Christmas to let 'em know you appreciate 'em?
