Look at it statistically - there are STILL more people dying in car accidents every day than have died total from the flu. :P

I was living and working in NYC the first time i read the book

it was winter and the subways are packed with sick people (mental as well)

I think i set the record for riding between cars from Pelham park to Wall st just so i wouldnt have to stand next to anyone weezing or coughing

That book and a few others of his really hit the old "this could really happen" button

My doctor told me the worst places for catching colds and the flu:

Movie Theaters
Shopping malls
Daycare/School
And I'd like to add - Conventions :awinky:

'Tis why we get sicker in the winter - indoors more, shopping more, etc.

I should be uber safe then. I've been training with Hellpuppy for the buffet marathon. This morning we hooked up for an early morning breakfast buffet. And you know its got to be good if this fat ass gets out of bed. Anyhow there are some world class chow hounds that show up for this thing. We were the svelte and suave studs out of that bunch...and young whippersnappers too.
Im sad to say though that we got our asses handed to us by this one eating buzzshaw. this fucker was at the door pounding on it before it was open. By the time we sat down he had this damn plate of food that had a heaping mound of breakfast foods. He tore thru 5 plates heaped up big sized and that dont count the oceans of beverages. He was done before we even thought about seconds. Made us look like mere chumps in the chow hound department too.
And if you mashed me you hellpuppy and TGF together wed still been smaller than this hawngry hippo. His dunlop disease made mine look like a minor irritation.

36,000 people die every year in the flu season, which is 3 months long.
That's 300 people a day, every day, for 3 months.

This one is no different, just hit sooner and quicker than folks thought it would.

I'm still not taking any chances though, been slathering the kids up with Purell antibacterial hand cream every chance I get!

Yeah, the media really has everyone worked into a lather about it though.

Dunno about the rest of the country, but around here it's hard to find a doctor's office with vaccine, and if you do they tend pretty much will only give it to the elderly and others who are most vulnerable.

And you've got people calling around like crazy in a panic like they're gonna die if they dont get the vaccine. Gotta love when the media scares the herd...

And from what I've read, the strain most of the people are dying from isn't even prevented by the current vaccine.

I heard on the news last night the cdc was preparing for a pandemic (sp"?)

650,000 people world wide will die this flu season

from the flu

peaches your correct

they cant make vaccine of a current strain

all the vacinies are from the Last known strain from the previous flu season

and carrie

over use of anti bactirieals is a verry bad problem in this country now

just adds to the streagth of the next bacrtia and lowers the effectiveness of anti biotics as medicine againts them

But is it the flu that is killing them ?

Last night on CNN they were reporting one of the deaths and it was being attributed to "a flu related illness"......

Sounds like key words to me......

It is all part of a vast right wing conspiracy I tell you !!!! :zoinks:

True - my mother, the nurse, has strongly advised all us kids who have little ones (thankfully I'm not one of them :awinky: ) to avoid antibacterial soaps.

And even though you said Purell, if you ARE using the actual soaps and you have a septic tank, be sure to take extra care (i.e. more Ridex or yeast) as the antibacterial soaps in the gray water will kill the "good" bacterial in your tank needed to break everything down. :)

How many people died as a result of the flu epidemic in 1918-20?

Sells newspapers and antibacterial soap, though ...

Damn straight Forest,

How do you think we got to this point, people over using anti-biotics. You don't need a vaccine or drugs to get you through the floor, have a bowl of soup and some damn oranges, let your body wage it's war. Viva la immune system!

Carrie
12-15-2003, 10:32 AM
Damn Toolz, that rhymed!

We are not a family that normally overuses antibiotics. We're one of those strange ones really; no circumcisions, no immunizations, no doctors unless it's absolutely necessary. The kids catch their colds and work through them with chicken soup and oranges and juice and vitamin C... I *want* them to have as many of their own antibodies as possible.

The media has just worked its magic on me with this one too - it scares me and I don't want to take the chance of losing my little buddies. Hence the hand stuff.

I DO use AB soap to wash my hands after I've been touching raw meat (no comments from the peanut gallery.....). But I have a pump bottle in my kitchen that's been there for 3 years and is still about 4/5 of the way full. :P

I also keep a bottle in each of my bathrooms as I understand my guest might want to use it after seeing the cleanliness, or lack of it, of my house. B)
