Keep it simple (K.I.S.S. theory)

That person has challenges with the principles of simplicity

When suggested reading/studying Marcus Aurelius they don't get it,

Something their professors never told them about? ..... I wonder why?

Perhaps if professors suggested to them to read Marcus Aurelius it might give a new perspective

Challenging blind adherence to every word the professor spews

and they might lose using their professors every word and breath as a crutch

First principles. Simplicity

you can skip the rest except the last two sentences

From my grandfather Verus I learned good morals and the government of my temper.

From the reputation and remembrance of my father, modesty and a manly character.

From my mother, piety and beneficence, and abstinence, not only from evil deeds, but even from evil thoughts; and further, simplicity in my way of living, far removed from the habits of the rich.

From my great-grandfather, not to have frequented public schools, and to have had good teachers at home, and to know that on such things a man should spend liberally.

From my governor, to be neither of the green nor of the blue party at the games in the Circus, nor a partizan either of the Parmularius or the Scutarius at the gladiators' fights; from him too I learned endurance of labour, and to want little, and to work with my own hands, and not to meddle with other people's affairs, and not to be ready to listen to slander.

From Diognetus, not to busy myself about trifling things, and not to give credit to what was said by miracle-workers and jugglers about incantations and the driving away of daemons and such things; and not to breed quails for fighting, nor to give myself up passionately to such things; and to endure freedom of speech; and to have become intimate with philosophy; and to have been a hearer, first of Bacchius, then of Tandasis and Marcianus; and to have written dialogues in my youth; and to have desired a plank bed and skin, and whatever else of the kind belongs to the Grecian discipline.

From Rusticus I received the impression that my character required improvement and discipline; and from him I learned not to be led astray to sophistic emulation, nor to writing on speculative matters, nor to delivering little hortatory orations, nor to showing myself off as a man who practises much discipline, or does benevolent acts in order to make a display; and to abstain from rhetoric, and poetry, and fine writing; and not to walk about in the house in my outdoor dress, nor to do other things of the kind; and to write my letters with simplicity, like the letter which Rusticus wrote from Sinuessa to my mother; and with respect to those who have offended me by words, or done me wrong, to be easily disposed to be pacified and reconciled, as soon as they have shown a readiness to be reconciled; and to read carefully, and not to be satisfied with a superficial understanding of a book; nor hastily to give my assent to those who talk overmuch; and I am indebted to him for being acquainted with the discourses of Epictetus, which he communicated to me out of his own collection.

From Apollonius I learned freedom of will and undeviating steadiness of purpose; and to look to nothing else, not even for a moment, except to reason; and to be always the same, in sharp pains, on the occasion of the loss of a child, and in long illness; and to see clearly in a living example that the same man can be both most resolute and yielding, and not peevish in giving his instruction; and to have had before my eyes a man who clearly considered his experience and his skill in expounding philosophical principles as the smallest of his merits; and from him I learned how to receive from friends what are esteemed favours, without being either humbled by them or letting them pass unnoticed.

From Sextus, a benevolent disposition, and the example of a family governed in a fatherly manner, and the idea of living conformably to nature; and gravity without affectation, and to look carefully after the interests of friends, and to tolerate ignorant persons, and those who form opinions without consideration: he had the power of readily accommodating himself to all, so that intercourse with him was more agreeable than any flattery; and at the same time he was most highly venerated by those who associated with him: and he had the faculty both of discovering and ordering, in an intelligent and methodical way, the principles necessary for life; and he never showed anger or any other passion, but was entirely free from passion, and also most affectionate; and he could express approbation without noisy display, and he possessed much knowledge without ostentation.

From Alexander the grammarian, to refrain from fault-finding, and not in a reproachful way to chide those who uttered any barbarous or solecistic or strange-sounding expression; but dexterously to introduce the very expression which ought to have been used, and in the way of answer or giving confirmation, or joining in an inquiry about the thing itself, not about the word, or by some other fit suggestion.

From Fronto I learned to observe what envy, and duplicity, and hypocrisy are in a tyrant, and that generally those among us who are called Patricians are rather deficient in paternal affection.

From Alexander the Platonic, not frequently nor without necessity to say to any one, or to write in a letter, that I have no leisure; nor continually to excuse the neglect of duties required by our relation to those with whom we live, by alleging urgent occupations.

From Catulus, not to be indifferent when a friend finds fault, even if he should find fault without reason, but to try to restore him to his usual disposition; and to be ready to speak well of teachers, as it is reported of Domitius and Athenodotus; and to love my children truly.

From my brother Severus, to love my kin, and to love truth, and to love justice; and through him I learned to know Thrasea, Helvidius, Cato, Dion, Brutus; and from him I received the idea of a polity in which there is the same law for all, a polity administered with regard to equal rights and equal freedom of speech, and the idea of a kingly government which respects most of all the freedom of the governed; I learned from him also consistency and undeviating steadiness in my regard for philosophy; and a disposition to do good, and to give to others readily, and to cherish good hopes, and to believe that I am loved by my friends; and in him I observed no concealment of his opinions with respect to those whom he condemned, and that his friends had no need to conjecture what he wished or did not wish, but it was quite plain.

From Maximus I learned self-government, and not to be led aside by anything; and cheerfulness in all circumstances, as well as in illness; and a just admixture in the moral character of sweetness and dignity, and to do what was set before me without complaining. I observed that everybody believed that he thought as he spoke, and that in all that he did he never had any bad intention; and he never showed amazement and surprise, and was never in a hurry, and never put off doing a thing, nor was perplexed nor dejected, nor did he ever laugh to disguise his vexation, nor, on the other hand, was he ever passionate or suspicious. He was accustomed to do acts of beneficence, and was ready to forgive, and was free from all falsehood; and he presented the appearance of a man who could not be diverted from right rather than of a man who had been improved. I observed, too, that no man could ever think that he was despised by Maximus, or ever venture to think himself a better man. He had also the art of being humorous in an agreeable way.

One underlying lesson/theme here .... Among others .....
That knowledge is everywhere, a cup to be indulged with many sources, to be gained everywhere

and this is just an end:

And you will know I am the Lord when I lay my vengeance upon you." I been sayin' that shit for years. And if you ever heard it, it meant your ass. I never really questioned what it meant. I thought it was just a cold-blooded thing to say to a motherfucker before you popped a cap in his ass. But I saw some shit this mornin' made me think twice. Now I'm thinkin': it could mean you're the evil man.

And I'm the righteous man. And Mr. 9mm here, he's the shepherd protecting my righteous ass in the valley of darkness. Or it could be you're the righteous man and I'm the shepherd and it's the world that's evil and selfish. I'd like that. But that shit ain't the truth. The truth is you're the weak. And I'm the tyranny of evil men. But I'm tryin', Ringo. I'm tryin' real hard to be a shepherd.

Oh puhlease, like you can even comprehend the meditations of Marcus Aurelius Antonius, let alone view them in any sort of historical perspective in order to dredge up even a tiny bit of meaning out of them.

The only reason you keep dribbling about "keep it simple", is because simple is all you fucking know. You use it as justification for your inability to even remotely rise above "keep it simple". Keep it simple so Vick can understand it.

Sure.
You thought he was quoting Marcus Aurelius Antonius, and tried to belittle him with what you thought was his inability to comprehend such; when in fact he was simply quoting a line from the movie Pulp Fiction.

And had you read more than the first 10 words or so of what he said, you would've realized it wasn't Marcus at all but something completely different. Marcus didn't run around saying "motherfucker" and "pop a cap in his ass". :)

Labret simply has a case of paralysis by analysis.

Simple things, like being able to see the forest through the trees is alien to him. Just a stupid analogy that is below him.

That's what happens when you think you are the only smart person around.

Wisdom is not knowledge, and cannot be absorbed in the same manner as knowledge.

Just a few sidenotes -
Marcus Aurelius is simplicity, first principles :)

Enlightenment and learning come from many sources - why I chose the above - it illustrates much about learning -

Interesting how when a certain someone feels engaged (in a manner they may not enjoy or be familiar with) they respond in a negative fashion as opposed to engaging in enlightening dialog

And sad... :(

In order to have an open dialog, one has to be open minded.

Open minds are humble, not prideful.

Big deal, I know 24 year old phd candidates.

Still working on it? I started in September.

Little timeline for you. Started college when I was 21, I needed to work to make the money to attend. Spent 6 years in various universities where I got both my bachelors in anthropology and my bachelors in sociology, two entirely seperate degrees. Graduated when I was 27. Spent 3 years building porn business, made first million by age 30. Started grad school when I was 31, I just turned 32. I know 20 year old grad students, I know 60 year old grad students. Only a true dipshit would use someones age at which they decide to attend grad school as some measure of success or failure. Bitch, you didnt even go to highschool, and you try and talk shit? Again - if you're as smart as you claim you are, where were the scholarships? Grants? Based on your opinion of yourself, the schools would have been falling all over themselves in order to get you there. The smart people *I* know went to college virtually free.

Spent 6 years in various universities where I got both my bachelors in anthropology and my bachelors in sociology, two entirely seperate degrees.
You must have learned how to spell by reading Fletch's sig :P

Hmmm - my brother got his two bachelors in 5 years (I didn't realize he had two degrees until I starting riding him about taking 5 years to graduate. What can I say - he's my baby brother - I pick on him :P )

Only a true dipshit would use someones age at which they decide to attend grad school as some measure of success or failure. Bitch, you didnt even go to highschool, and you try and talk shit? Please.
I've just not run into someone as incredibly brilliant as you who took so long to get a master's degree. And I went to one of the top college prep schools in FL - it was a "high school". :)

Whats your excuse? How does your timeline go? 1st grade, 2nd grade, 3rd grade... time to get married to your cousin.
As with all the other members of my family, I was promised to a much older first cousin at the age of 14. We married, had 6 kids, got divorced (I got to keep the trailer - HA - showed him!), married one of my Ex's illegitimate sons and went on to have 7 more kids. We got divorced last year and I'm now dating my uncle. But I've got my doublewide so I'm a happy camper! :rokk:

Funny the things you fools latch onto and parade around with.

I am almost certain that none of you have pursued the scholarship application process. I was out of highschool 3 years before I applied to college, there are very very few scholarships, if any at all, that will apply to someone like that. Big money scholarships given out to highschool kids involve either sports, or kids who have excelled academically far above the national average, and have already begun the admissions process for a university while "still in" highschool.

Once you get into a university, the scholarship process is completely different. Its now competition. On the Oprano continuum of intelligence I am nearly a God, but that is not saying much. At a major university, I lack the credentials to compete with the uber students involved with student government, recommendations from senators and congressman, etc etc. At a school of 20k students, less than 1% are going to pay for school "entirely" with scholarships. And those that do, will either be going into the NFL or NBA, or becoming Rhodes Scholars.

I received grants. Anyone can get grants, but nobody gets them to the tune of 15k a semester to cover tuition.

I love arguing how school works with people who have never attended.

Get over yourself....

I was out of school 11 years when I decided to go back. I paid for my first semester out of pocket (well, actually GI bill) and was on a university trustees scholarship for the rest of my time there. Scholarship requirements were to maintain above a 3.5 (on a 4.0 scale).

So, quit making out like you are the only one that ever went to school above the 3rd grade level.

Wanna compare undergrad transcripts ? (a clue: if you aren't above a 3.8 or so out of 4.0...don't)

I did not pursue grad school because unlike you I did not make my first million before I was 30, so I can't compare grades at that level.

All of this begets the fact that a college degree doesn't mean shit, anymore than a high school diploma means a damn thing. It is not what you have learned that matters, it is what you have done with the knowledge that matters in this world.

I love arguing how school works with people who have never attended.
Oh, my favorite little genius, I not only went to college, but I completed all the scholarship forms for my ex-husband's full academic scholarship to GA Tech as well as having just sent a child to two different colleges. In addition, I helped with the scholarship, grant and student loan process with my 4 siblings. My father recently went to GA Tech for a year for free. Why? Who knows. I think he was bored.

I realize you don't read all my posts, but previously I stated that I am the only one in my family for at least 4 generations who doesn't have a degree and many have masters and/or PhD's. My maternal grandfather was an English professor at Vanderbilt and my mother currently teaches at 3 different schools including Emory. One of the universities is currently trying to get my father to teach a business class, but he keeps telling them he's "retired". :P This was in addition to my brother who was working on his post doctorate at Duke (before he realized he liked money more than studying, hehe). When you brag about "academia" it just makes me laugh because I know of all the conversations my family, who is actually INVOLVED in ALL aspects of it, has about how out of touch academia is with reality.

I daresay I might know a LITTLE about the process of getting $$$ for school. If you weren't able to get any, then I can promise you the schools didn't really want you. Heck, my little sister is getting $5K a year just because she plays the alto sax, LOL (and yes, pervs - she's the cute one I've shown pictures of :awinky: )

Edited for bad pronouns and commas :)

All this arguing over who's smarter than who and who's done more than who is getting old. We need to settle this the old fashioned way.

You and Serge can call up all your dead ancestors and their academic achievements all you want, until they prove that intelligence is entirely genetic, your argument floats like a turd. It is pointless.

Who says I was not able to get any? I got student loans, I got grants, and I spent my summers working for NPPI processors in SE Alaska to pay for school. I did not go to some Kentucky community college, my education was very expensive.

How expensive is your ignorance?

Actually this thread from the beginning could have benefited you. A look at the process of learning, where education springs forth among other things ......

at the very least from a interesting, engaging perspective.

Even if the material is familiar to you it's worth going over

and that you can't, won't, don't is :(

If I could just share just one thing that would stick with you .....

.....most learning doesn't happen in the classroom

As long as you want to beat your chest about how intelligent you believe yourself to be .....
No one here will be impressed

Peaches and Sarettah bring up interesting points.

We need to standardize the age for the dad beating contest. Not fair if my dad is 55 and your's is 85.

So for the sake of fairness, let's all pretend our dads are 60.

I didn't know my biological father.

Actually no...

Before you added a pass on the board some people would lurk on here because they Thought it was a place full of pithy statements and good cash ideas. a good place to look for customers.

but, It's not what it was, now your cutting the lurkers out of the equation. I'm sure you know how boards work, being the king of boards and all. but for those out there who don't.

most of these lurkers make good customers, but aren't up to the whole posting on a board that might eat them alive if the misspell a word idea. By making them post to view your losing lurkers and making the quality of the board go down. you would think that it would be better for your board sponsors but its not, there missing that lurker impression now.

so, no i don't think pissing with you makes me money. at least not on oprano. want to go to pornresource or something?

Warning: Nothing expressed in my posts is a collective opinion of any organizations that I am affiliated with, they are solely my opinions of my own and I am solely responsible for them. ;-)

he beleives that pissing with Serge can STILL make money in today's environment
;-))))

Warning: Nothing expressed in my posts is a collective opinion of any organizations that I am affiliated with, they are solely my opinions of my own and I am solely responsible for them. ;-)

I think I might ad that to my sig.[/b][/quote]
sorry to ruin your ideas, but our findings were confirmed by our distinquished collegues

Right on sounds good then, for the sponsors, but I'm still not under the impression that pissing with you makes me cash.

It's just something I enjoy, occasionally.

My Dad designs/builds torpedos and sonar arrays for the navy and I once had a turtle, does that count?
Oh! And I currently have a picture of a seal on the calendar hanging next to me. :)
