Is it the parents or other authority figures? The people you hang around? The TV programs you watch? A book you read?
How can 2 intelligent people look at the same circumstance and come to such divergent views on cause and effect? How do they see such different realities?
Blows me away...

Lack of education.
Show me a university that is considered a bastion of conservatism.
In this situation, it's possible that we have a different understanding of the facts.
I find it very hard to believe anyone in the Adult industry doesn't understand the importance of fighting to defend the Constitution even in cases like this.
Think of the Church ladies sitting on the Jury of one of Larry Flynt's Freedom of Speech cases. She might not be a Hustler reader, but her right to practice a religion freely is the very Amendment that allows Larry Flynt to publish his magazine.

The very definition of conservative implies it.
Favoring traditional views and values; tending to oppose change.
Who needs an education when all you need to do is maintain the status quo? Just follow along like a good ignorant sheep and you will be considered a good conservative.

Universites themselves have a vested interest in liberal idelogy and benefit from it....the tenure system alone is proof of how liberal ideolgy permeates. Merit? Who needs it?
Clearly, there are intelligent people on both sides of liberalism and conservatism. I find the need or desire to label the opponent as "stupid" or "uneducated" a convenient crutch in a real debate. I found it particularly amusing watching Labret and Vick call each other stupid, when the opposite is obvious. Opposing viewpoints, certainly....uneducated or dumb.....no.

I'm talking more of how someone arrives at a particular conclusion that ends up manifesting itself into an ideology....
So, not so much how someone becomes a Liberal or a Conservative....but how someone arrives at the conclusions that end up pointing them in that direction...
A subtle point, I suppose. I like to make the distinction because of the question you raise. One can be socially "liberal" yet fiscally "conservative"...
So for EACH question inside the ideology....how do equally intelligent people come to a different conclusion?

It's a combination of people you're around, books/magazines/newspapers that you've read, TV/Movies that you've watched and most of all, experience. Two intelligent people can read/watch/experience completely different events.
Except for PD :awinky:, liberals tend to be young. As they age and get more life experience, many become more conservative. I've watched it happen with myself and each of my 4 siblings, including their spouses. I've rarely seen anyone go from being conservative to being a liberal. Only reason I ask is because I came at the two conclusions seperately.
The social liberal was all a thinking process for me.
The financial conservative was a combination of how I think things work and two seperate incidents which shoved welfare fraud down my throat.

Educated me? you proved my point with that article. Did you even read it or did you just look for keywords?
Argument
By and large, academia tends to be liberal. There are conservative professors, to be sure, but they are usually moderate, and in the minority. But what of the far right? For many decades now, the far right has been gradually disappearing from American universities (with a few notable exceptions, like the computer science department). The steadily growing influence of liberalism in academia has alarmed many on the far right, because without a source of ideas and theories, the influence of their political movement will crumble.
Education as a cure for the disease of conservatism.

The truth is exactly the opposite of your claim:
There is NO education in universities. The default position for an uneducated person is leftist. "Why doesn't the government just print the money to cover the debt?" "Why don't we set the minimum wage at $1000/hr so everyone can be rich?" etc.
It's not until a person understands basic economics that he can be on the right side of the issues.
Business schools = conservative and libertarian.
Sociology = leftist.

All of that and more. Whether it be religion, politics, morals, all of a persons life experiences come together to make who and what they are. It isn't just one thing as, for example, I'm the only one in my family who doesn't believe in God.

Business schools are tech schools. I suspect there is not a good deal of social sciences, art, or lit classes at "business school".
Why would a business school not crank out neocons? They are not being educated, they are not taught critical thinking skills, they are taught to crunch numbers, not debate social theory.

See, I am the opposite, Peaches. Not in belief structure, but in the practical applications. I have had to modify my philosophy to be realistic, rather than ideal.
Take a subset of Buff's point...
Philosophically, I am opposed to the notion of welfare in ANY form. You can't hold a job, earn a living, whatever.....too fucking bad. Starve. I fail to see why MY money is confiscated to pay for someone else's life. I don't recognize the morals that say I owe something to someone I've never met and will never know. However, the philosophical ideal of that is different than the practical reality of dealing with the entity who won't earn his way. He's here, so what we do with him?
I can agree with some liberal mindsets that our best alternative is to do some of the things they do. What I can't agree with or fathom the conclusion some liberals come to, is the philosophy that we REALLY DO owe people we've never met, don't care about, have no relation to, etc....
Dealing with practical reality and BELIEVING in something are completely different things.

It's even worse than that. I do volunteer work for a consumer group in Atlanta and some of the crackpot ideas we get are bizarre.
Just some examples:
Everyone should be paid a fair living wage. If a man is married has 5 kids and is doing the exact same job as a single man, then the "family" man should make a lot more $$$ than the single man. After all, he needs it more.
All businesses should provide full healthcare insurance, cost free, to their employees. If you don't work, then of course the government should provide it.
No one in a business should make X% more than the lowest wage earner.
Workers with families should have more time off than those who are single.
And again - just a few examples and I talk to 10-20 of these people A WEEK. :zoinks:

The only one in there I agree with is the healthcare.
And I know it makes me a commy. ;) But I do think in the richest country in the world, people should be able to get reasonable quality healthcare at any time.
The rest of that stuff is retarded though. ;)
as i have said a few times here, i think it is the difference in being left or right brain dominant. some people use both hemispheres equally.
how can two people look at the same issue and see totally different things?
how can two people look at this picture, see totally different things? because the evidence is there to show that both people can see two totally different things and be 100% correct

But why should someone else pay for it? :o Why should there be laws that say I have to pay for my employee's health insurance? And if I have to, then where are the laws that say my employees have to take care of their own health by not over eating, smoking, etc.?
Top notch healthcare is available to every citizen AND illegal alien in the US. There are laws which prevent ANYONE standing on US soil to be denied life saving medical treatment.
However, go to a public hospital some night and see the people sitting in the ER waiting room with minor problems. It will cost a minimum of $400 to the taxpayers when the patient could have gone to a clinic for $15. But the ER is free, so they go there. I have no pity for those people, sorry. :(

And again - just a few examples and I talk to 10-20 of these people A WEEK. :zoinks:
Exactly my point, Peaches...
These people BELIEVE in these thoughts....it is their philosophy of life....and it's not just some trailer-trash, welfare-skimming, peons....this thinking was born in academia, not the pub...
Read the "history" of the Twentieth Century Motor Company. It follows these "ideas" to their logical and inevitable conclusion. :wnw:

IMHO, liberals tend to be better educated and have a better sense of all the wonderful possibilities "the government" could provide to the needy to make life better for everyone. A separate class of "liberals" are the uneducated poor who have a well-developed sense of entitlement to government assistance.
Conservatives tend to be more pragmatic. Their first question is usually, "How are we going to pay for it?". Conservatives generally believe a person's lot in life is determined by their own actions, and are unwilling to pay to subsidize personal choices that do not reflect their own work-ethic.
I agree with you Peaches that people tend to become more "pragmatic" as they get older.

The only one in there I agree with is the healthcare.
And I know it makes me a commy. ;) But I do think in the richest country in the world, people should be able to get reasonable quality healthcare at any time.
The only thing I will say is that having life saving treatment guaranteed for free is great, but sometimes the preventative stuff would save more money in the long run.
I know it would be abused, and I'm not totally certain I would actually support a national healthcare plan. It's just the one thing on your list I agreed with at all in any way. ;) Perhaps I should have said that initially instead of what I did.

I think you have the wrong labels here. You should be saying right wing or left wing or moderate, conservative/liberal are social perspectives only.
I'm right wing from having gone through some REALLY REALLY tough times and pulling myself out of it by my own hard work, and at the same time watching lazy suckers just lay around and suck off the system while complaining that they don't get enough help.

Conservative politicians are generally willing to pay BIG bucks for what they consider legitimate functions of government....things like defense spending, military, and law enforcement.
In a reversal of the usual roles, it is now the liberals who ask, "How are we going to pay for this...."???

I'm not sure which is more idiotic - [labert]'s assertion that there are no "thinking" conservatives or Buffy's $1000 an hour minimum wage statement. Granted, the Anne Coulters of today aren't worthy of sharpening the pencils of a Wm. F. Buckley, but there are just as many - or, more correctly, just as few - thinking conservatives as there are liberals. And sheep bleating is sheep bleating ... whether it's the born again crowd or the perpetual (as opposed to the professional) academics.
Peaches - I heard that. After I have my geritol, I may think of a witty retort, if I can think of one that won't piss off your lovers, Gonzo and Confucy. :D
I'm from a mixed home - one New Deal Democrat White Trash Baptist and a moderate Republican German Catholic. Not so strangely enough, the majority of the White Trash side of the family has become Republican; the German side is split pretty much down the middle between what Torone would call RINO (McCain style Republicans) and Democrats.
The main thing that casued me to go further left was civil rights.
While the crackers and their fellow travellers like to talk about the 130+ years since the end of slavery, I am old enough to remember folks, many of them veterans of the U.S. military, getting killed for wanting to vote or the right to get food poisoning from a dime store lunch counter. I am old enough to remember terrorists blowing up churches and murdering people with the protection, if not support and cooperation, of a number of state governments, and sometimes even the FBI. I am old enough to remember watching scumbags like Bull Connor send police dogs and fire hoses on school children.
The more I listened to the blatant racism of my grandfather, and the convoluted semilogic of my father (who tried to put a wrapper on his racism so that it didn't sound like grandpop) - the more I began to drift left.

Of course how you are raised and what your parents' political affiliations are is going to be a huge factor, but I think the biggest factor in determining someone's political beliefs is experience.
In my experience, sitting in a class talking about the wonders of welfare, free health care, and poor people is quite different than being in the trenches actually counseling those people from week to week and seeing how they do their damndest to use and abuse the system.
Being "poor" and turning around one day to find that you're "comfortable" is an eye-opener as well, especially when you take a look at your check and see how much of it is being ripped away from you to pay for those same system abusers you were counseling a couple of years before.
Experience is what you gain as you grow older, which is why *I* think that most people grow more conservative as they grow older. They lose the ideallic dream of how good society could be "if only"... and experience the truth of how the majority of people are lazy and will cheat at the slightest opportunity, exploit something until it's gone all just for a handout that they don't have to work for.
You start seeing how the people busting their asses day in and day out are being punished, while the people sitting back collecting your tax dollars that you worked for are being rewarded more and more for their refusal to get off of their duffs and take responsibility for themselves.

Have you been working in different trenches than I have?
While I know there is fraud in the system, I've personally worked with a lot of people who've ran into hard times, I'm met a LOT who simply need a little help getting back on their feet and are trying their damnedest to do it...I've also had to deal with a lot of people with various mental disorders (not including myself ;-)) and these are the people who are forgotten when we talk about welfare and medical handouts...for every "able bodied" person mooching off the system, I can find equal numbers or even more who suffer from various mental problems...
While I don't believe in cradle to grave handouts, I see no societal problem with helping our less fortunate..many many of whom just need a little help once in awhile, especially if they are faced with mental problems which have a lot to do with things like the ability to hold a job or even a conversation.
Having spent a lot of time helping out in homeless shelters, I've come across people who've lost their homes and have problems getting back on their feet (hard to get a job without a phone and an address).
It's easy to say "well, they made a choice, now live with it" but should someone lose thier whole life over a mistake? Once beyond that point, they might just need a simple handup and are more than happy to work for it.
Isn't it ironic than Ronald Reagen cut spending on mental health programs and now suffers from alzheimers?
as for my nurturing, my mother isn't very politcal at all but is pretty mucha liberal, help your fello man type of person and my father went into Vietnam a red, white and blue conservative loe it or leave it type guy and came out a very changed man and very liberal but the last decade or so hasn't really voted along any party line...

How can 2 intelligent people look at the same circumstance and come to such divergent views on cause and effect? How do they see such different realities?
Blows me away...
It's a matter of intelligence and education. Someone further down tried to make the point that most universities are liberal; therefore Liberals are better educated. Sorry, that's NOT education, it's indoctrination...most of the people coming out of those places cannot read, write, or spell above jr. high school levels.
Think about the way Libs want to do things...read up enough to see what their agenda is. I have. I also was watching when Kruschev was shouting, "We'll bury you!". The USSR is dead; but the philosophy lives on...China, Viet Nam, France, Berkely, the DNC, etc.
My point is that Conservatives look at things logically; and Libs look emotionally. The aforementioned philosophy fits their way of doing things to a "T". Problem is, countries trying it are doomed. It sounds great; but sooner or later, there is no one left to pay the bills. Then, if the country can't coerce money out of other countries, the same thing happens that happened to the USSR.

Ahh yes, the icing on your mongoloid cupcake... "conservatives look at things logically". Hillbilly logic perhaps. Wrong, conservatives are largerly uneducated reactionary idealogues. Conservatives love the silver bullet approach to problem solving. I am neck deep in studying the penal harm movement right now, and it is a glowing example of "conservative logic". And as a result, we now incarcerate more of our own citizens than any other nation in the world. California alone incarcerates more people than all of Europe's prisons combined. We now incarcerate more people per 100k of population than the Soviet Union did. And we liberated the people of Iraq? But I digress. Conservatives love mandatory minimums, 3 strikes laws, penal harm, elimination of parole, etc etc. And as a result the land of the free now holds the dubious position of kings of global incarceration. That is conservative logic in action.
You will try and argue that the war on porn by Ashcroft is a result of a "logical" conclusion? Please do, I want to hear it.
Problem is, countries trying it are doomed
Humor me and show me the countries that have attempted true communism as Marx outlined. There are no true communist countries, never have been. Typical reactionary hillbilly rhetoric. People attempting communism were viewed as such a threat to the United States that we spent the better part of the 20th century attempting to crush it wherever it reared its ugly ugly head. Sorta kinda hard to flourish with the United States trying to kick your ass wherever the people rise up. Why did the US feel communism was such a threat? Put down the Coulter and step away from the tv slowly. I am amazed any country that deviates from true unfettered American style capitalism manages to feed its people.
How do all these socialist countries around the world do it? After all, socialism is merely the intermediate between communism and capitalism.

Torone,
The conservatives, and by that I mean the Republicans you support, are just as prone to indoctrination and socialism as the Dems.
The difference is, they more reflect your individual ideology.
There are folks on both sides that think logically and/or emotionally.
Thankfully, the purposely frustrating, two-party system that we have helps to keep things in check!

Again, I am not quite sure what you uneducated folk think happens when you walk through those doors, but as the article you posted on neocon think tanks so eloquently stated, academia has checks and balances. You dont become a phd and a leader in your field by just making shit up. The entire process is nothing but defending yourself from nonstop attacks on your theories or arguments. Trust me my dearest Serge, if someone tries to spit out bullshit statistics or crackpot science, someone will be there to ram it up their ass, THAT is what academia is in a nutshell. A bunch of nerds doing their best to discredit and destroy someone elses lifes work. Checks and balances.
So in light of that, do I accept the findings of someone who has spent the better part of his life fighting his way to the top of the academic food chain on some statistics as trivial as rates of Soviet imprisonment per 100k of population? Yeah, I do. Like I said, if he was lying, someone would be there to point it out, and they wouldnt do it nicely.
This reminds me of the time Buff claimed to have destroyed Noam Chomsky in an email debate, god thats funny.

Yeah, my apologies, I will make sure and tell my professor, who has spent the last 40 years working in corrections and developing correctional policy for the federal government, that his stats are indeed.... wrong.
And you think WE'RE the sheep?
While I do agree with you that we have too many people sitting in jail who have committed victimless crimes, to believe every thing ANYONE tells you isn't very smart. :(
Your post is answered above.
I guess it just depends on your priorities. Some people trust the President... when it comes to something as trivial as ROI stats provided by someone who is considered a leader in the field, yeah, I am not going to shit my pants and demand sources. I suspect in his 40 years of thesis defense that he has earned his stripes. I dont expect you to understand the process.
From this point on I will require sources from you, I dont want to believe that you have accepted anything anyone has had to say at face value without the proper due diligence.

Hey Labret, I find some of the things you post interesting, although I am certain we probably disagree on much.
I am curious, though... You spoke about leaving the US because of the consumer indoctrination (among others I suppose) and the course the country is on.
Where would you go?

If you think for one minute that "facts" aren't created in academia, you're kidding yourself. My brother just left his post doctorate "position" (I put that in quotes because it only paid $35K a year and HE was responsible for the almost 100 hours he put into filling out the paperwork for his grant request which paid that $35K) at Duke in genetics because of what he saw once he reached the "lofty levels". And he was dealing with MEDICAL studies which were fudged. If you think the same can't be done by a teacher dealing with prison populations, you truly aren't as smart as you think you are. Again, I would never trust ONE PERSON as a source for any information. :(
BTW, no, I don't have a college degree (went two years but then got married and became a housewife) but I'm the ONLY one in my family for 4 generations who doesn't have a degree and most have masters and/or PhD's. I've been around "educated" people all my life and I can assure you, there's a lot to be said for plain common sense and not everyone who's formally educated, has it. :awinky:

Conservatives love mandatory minimums, 3 strikes laws, penal harm, elimination of parole, etc etc. And as a result the land of the free now holds the dubious position of kings of global incarceration. That is conservative logic in action.
I would love to hear your solution.

God its like beating my head against a fucking wall. Listen, we are all well aware how statistics are manipulated and created, in fact, we are required to take courses in statistics and methods of social research in order to learn to how to deal with such matters. Trust me, I am sure my knowledge of means of gathering and manipulating data sets is far above average and as a result I know which statistics I can accept and which ones I should be suspect.
I will say this one more time. Checks and fucking balances. I know you probably like to think its just a bunch of yes men standing around, circle jerking each other and making shit up without a care in the world, but your accusation that "facts" are just "created" in academia is so utterly absurd that I almost want to disregard your post and not respond. Evidently nothing I have said has sunk in. Academia works in such a way that one CANNOT just make shit up.
For example, I am working on my masters (one step before phd). In May, god willing, I will be standing before 3 phds who have all read my thesis. They are going to proceed to tear me a new asshole if they see any problem at all, and they will force me to defend every single statement I make in my thesis. If I was dumb enough to make something up, it will be caught, and it will destroy me academically.
Just look at academia as a big message board of pissers. Would anyone on here be allowed to make something up and not get called on it by someone else on here? Very very doubtful.

LOL!! When my brother did his dissertation for his doctorate, he was sweating bullets before he presented it. He basically disappeared for 3 months to write it. He said he went before whatever it is you go before (this was several years ago, I forget what it's called. If you're really interested, I can dig through old emails and tell you), they asked him just a couple of questions, and that was it! :P He was amazed at how little care they seemed to pay attention to it. This was at the University of Minnesota, not Duke, BTW.
Obviously not everything which is taught in schools (any school) is falsified, fudged, created etc. I never said that. But there ARE professors who will spew incorrect information, usually because they themselves think it's 100% correct. Even my own son challenged a professor in college and the professor was proven wrong - it happens. B)

Pointless. I am not pursuing a career in academia, I have zero interest in helping or educating others en mass. I play the academia game for my own personal enjoyment and fulfillment.
And my comment was edited awhile ago slappy. Remember, I post and then edit. And even then, it was only edited due to uncertainty, not because I felt the statement was false.

Serge, you are still operating under the assumption that the ROI in the "Soviet Union" per 100k was more than the United States. If you have the stats, post em please.
We still haven't covered what can be done to improve the situation with regards to incarceration rates?
You can point out a problem until you're blue in the face, but no good comes of that until you work for the solutions
So looking at the problem is basically academia jerking off until work begins on the solution
and is wasted effort if nothing positive comes from it
So where are the solutions?

I would release all those who committed victimless drug crimes (and I include those who sell drugs - I don't consider people who make a conscious decision to buy drugs as "victims") and harsher punishments for those who rape and/or kill. I was just going to add something along these lines Serge. Anyone who can quote stats from the Soviet Union is WRONG
period
If they have actual stats taken at the time, they are being mislead, if they are attempting to compile stats from that time now they can have no basis in hard facts since the iron curtain was shut tight and records like that werent kept. This is not the WWII Nazi party of Berlin who documented everything, this was a system of Gov't meant to be idealic. They didn't accept that there could be any flaws. Watch the Movie Citizen X, it is a glaring example of how he Socialists of the USSR viewed their world.

Serge, you are still operating under the assumption that the ROI in the "Soviet Union" per 100k was more than the United States. If you have the stats, post em please.
WHICH STATS????
Stas given by Stalin?
REAL Stats which are guarded more than JFK murder files?
According to Stalin's stats, NOBODY was incarcerated in the USSR...because the Paradise on Earth has no social roots for Crime...
Is there is anything wrong with my stats? they confirm your point, don't they???
do you accept them?

That wasnt my point. I simply pointed out how conservative logic is shit. You all got on the prison problem.
Fist you have to ask me if I care about the prison crisis in this country. Go ahead, ask me.
So would you say that Reagan era conservative logic was a good solution?
Admittedly I need more information about "Reagan era conservative logic" leading to record imprisonment rates before commenting on it.
Something I never spent time studying
On the other hand is all the effort spent on analyzing and studying this data wasted unless something positive comes from it
Did the professor who spent 40 years of his life working in this field waste his life if his work can't make a change?
I'm still stuck on easy to point the finger, not as easy to work toward a solution
On some level I have an issue with this much energy going into studies without solutions coming from it
Now why do I sound like the liberal :D

I would release all those who committed victimless drug crimes (and I include those who sell drugs - I don't consider people who make a conscious decision to buy drugs as "victims") and harsher punishments for those who rape and/or kill. Rebel? Me thinks you got some sick sexual fantasies about me riding in on a Harley and grunge fucking you.
I am no rebel.
This all reminds me of what Adorno said, and only further proves my point.
"Today anyone who is incapable of talking in the prescribed fashion, that is of effortlessly reproducing the formulas, conventions and judgements of mass culture as if they were his own, is threatened in his very existence, suspected of being an idiot or an intellectual."

One cannot just make shit up....
Try this on for size, fucktard:
Emory University upholds objective truth and ousts an anti-gun history professor for his phony research (http://www.worldmag.com/world/issue/11-16-02/cultural_1.asp)
Mr. Bellesiles's book won the 2001 Bancroft Prize, the most prestigious award in the field of American history. Anti-gun activists seized upon his work, since it supports their view that the Second Amendment right "to keep and bear arms" does not refer to individual gun ownership but to a collective establishment of "a well-regulated militia."
Trouble is, he seems to have made up his data. Other historians found that his sources either did not exist or contained completely different evidence.
And now Emory University has taken the unusual step of investigating his research to see whether it violated a university policy against academic dishonesty. Emory commissioned a blue-ribbon panel of historians—Stanley Katz of Princeton, Hanna Gray of the University of Chicago, and Laurel Thatcher Ulrich of Harvard—to examine Mr. Bellesiles's research, and the panel's report found him guilty. Mr. Bellesiles, while still maintaining his innocence, resigned.
Mr. Bellesiles developed his claim that early Americans seldom owned guns by studying wills, probate records, and other inventories of property, then counting the numbers of guns that turned up. Thus he claims that from 1765 to 1790 on the frontiers of northern New England and western Pennsylvania the gun ownership rate was only 14 percent.
To arrive at these figures, though, the panel found that Mr. Bellesiles lumped all kinds of different information together, then manipulated it statistically. Wills seldom mention specific property, other than keepsakes, and some inventories were intended to be just of farm implements. Probate information from the estates of women, who were less likely to own guns, was added into probate information from the estates of men. Conflating all of this together and then taking percentages of the number of times guns were mentioned allowed him to understate the number of firearms.
Mr. Bellesiles also uses certain records from local militias, in which citizens came together into ad hoc military units to repel Indian attacks, fight the British in 1812, or fight each other in the Civil War. He claims militiamen came to the fight basically unarmed. He cites one muster in 1746 in which only 57 percent of the men brought a gun. The review panel found this to be a blatant misrepresentation. The original records list only one company—composed of particularly poor citizens—as being 43 percent disarmed. Of the other five companies, every man brought a rifle in two of them. The total rate of gun ownership in the militia was 80 percent.
But the problems in Mr. Bellesiles's research went beyond mushy statistics-mongering and biased and selective interpretations. Mr. Bellesiles claimed to have used probate records in San Francisco. But those records turned out to have been destroyed in the great earthquake and fire of 1906. When asked to produce his original notes, Mr. Bellesiles said that he lost them when his office was flooded, an event that his colleagues at Emory dispute. When asked about fallacious data posted on his website, he insisted that some hacker had put it there.
Labret, you are a dipshit of the first order. This shit goes on all over the place in Academia today, precisely because leftards are the one overseeing the the other leftards.
Noam Chomsky (since you brought that issue back up) detests capitalism and the West in general, yet he has no problem owning a couple of boats, 2 houses, a sports car, and SUV, and assorted other goodies provided by capitalism. I called him on his hypocrisy (after a little research), and he shut the fuck up.
So, I'm gonna put your "One just cannot make shit up" quote right there along side your new economic theory that higher costs for business is an economic stimulant in the "Idiotic shit that flows off Labret's Keyboard" pile.

I would release all those who committed victimless drug crimes (and I include those who sell drugs - I don't consider people who make a conscious decision to buy drugs as "victims") and harsher punishments for those who rape and/or kill. 'spaz' is a shortened version of newbiespaz from way back in my..........lets called the exploitive days, when i was surrounded by the Elite I would always ask questions, dozens of them at a time. Hungry to learn what they knew. They answered only because
1)I did not repeat the question, but would rather seek clarification
2)Showed them that I applied their answers to tasks at hand
I was/am a spaz because when i see the chance to learn from someone I jump on it and beat them to death with questions.
I wear the nick spaz with pride bro.
Do I think I am special? Mom said I was. Do I think I am special to you? Why yes I do because I disappointed you when I stated (correctly I might add) that I 'owned' you heh heh. If you care not then how could I possibly have illicited an emotion like disappointment? Hum, curious

Yeah, thats what I said. All academics are frauds. There you got me. hehe
All I said was is the claims made by Peaches that academia is rampant with made up stats and kook science is bullshit in that we have checks and balances. What some dick does outside the classroom is all him.
For example, you on this board with your made up econ theory. You can spout it off all day on here, I would looooove to see you get before some econ professors. checks and balances. Because you make shit up outside of academia, should all econ academics be punished?
Of course not, but we already know this. You are just prone to flights of fancy to illustrate your brainfarts.

Interesting that some people like to pretend there is Conservative "logic" (conveniently forgetting Liberal "logic")....when really, there is only logic itself.....
There are conservative and liberal AGENDAS, and both of them are so contradictory that any attempt to make them "logical" is doomed to failure.
The deluded wish that either side is more intelligent, educated, logical, emotional, whatever; is hysterical.

Nothing like a discussion where everyone can get on the same well worn soapboxes as always, and bleat the same sheep-ish comments.
However, getting back to DJ's original question:
Each person grows up in a collection of circumstances, many of them beyond their control. They grow up in a conservative area, a liberal area, a communist area, a one party state, a democracy, or any other flavor in between all of those. Some people live in the city all their lives, others have never visited a place with more than a few thousand people living in it.
When you grow up, you learn to either like or dislike the situation you are in. You are exposed to certain "solution sets" by government and your local "environment" and you are able to see them as good or bad in your eyes based on the results.
In the end, I suspect that political leanings have way more to do with what worked and what didn't during key times of your life. I suspect that a large number of USA conservatives on this board, example, were in their formative years during the Reagan era, which was a high water mark for a very pure brand of conservatism. The negatives of that presidency didn't come out until long after the president was gone. So basically the good impressions of "America in Charge" were instilled.
I was born and raised during a very "liberal" time in Canadian History, the first Prime Minister I can really remember is the late Pierre Elliott Trudeau, who ran Canada on and off over for maybe 15 years. Canada seemed better when he was there, and the conservative governments that got into power in between seemed never to be quite in tune with what Canada really wanted. When the Conservatives under Brian Mulroney (a good friend of Bush sr) caem to power with a huge majority, they did what they felt was right, and were rewarded with the biggest drop off in Canadian history the next time around, going from ruling party to essentially no longer existing, now down to being nothing more than a third ranking party. The liberal party of Canada is pretty much the only national party at this point.
Am I a "victim" of upbringing? Yes, almost without a doubt. I have lived in a place where conservative policies have "failed", and where the Liberal party and it's policies have ruled the roost for a large part of my lifetime. So far, I have yet to see the process or ideas of conservativism put into action in a way that was beneficial for the people overall in the long run. There was always short term benefits, but the costs of those benefits came back to haunt us all later.
I don't intend to "discuss" this back and forth on the board, I think we all know that there are some people here who enjoy nothing more than destroying a discussion with a stupid name calling back and forth that isn't productive for anyone. I just wanted to add my experiences and you can all take them for what it's worth (and some will think they aren't worth much!).

Have you resorted to lying about what I said in order to prove your points? Here's a refresher course:
Obviously not everything which is taught in schools (any school) is falsified, fudged, created etc. I never said that. But there ARE professors who will spew incorrect information, usually because they themselves think it's 100% correct. Even my own son challenged a professor in college and the professor was proven wrong - it happens.
Quick - play like Fletch when I point out his errors and say you don't really bother reading my posts. :P But if you're going to refer to them, at least get the facts straight, OK? :)

powerful yes, convey intelligence? Not very likely. While i agree words like 'Fuck' are versatile and can eloquently convey a whole host of subtleties, they are most certainly out of place during an intelligent debate of facts. As appropriate as bopping someone on the nose because you cant think of a workable argument to their statement

While I know there is fraud in the system, I've personally worked with a lot of people who've ran into hard times, I'm met a LOT who simply need a little help getting back on their feet and are trying their damnedest to do it...
I've also had to deal with a lot of people with various mental disorders (not including myself ;-)) and these are the people who are forgotten when we talk about welfare and medical handouts...for every "able bodied" person mooching off the system, I can find equal numbers or even more who suffer from various mental problems...
I fail to see what gives you the right to project your moral compass of "helping those less fortunate" on to other people (taxpayers). Therein lies the double standard of the liberal (just like the idiotic double standard of the conservative).
Logically, how do you disregard the moral standards of the conservative right while embracing those of the liberal left? You don't want the conservative right reaching into your life and telling you how you can access porn, who you can sleep with, what a woman can do with her body, etc....YET...you have no problem reaching into those conservative pockets to gather funds to "help the less fortunate"...even though they may disagree with YOU...
The theory that YOU (liberal YOU) know what's right for society and that your OPINION that someone shouldn't lose everything over a "mistake" or "choice" they have made, and that taxpayers who may not share this same view should shut up and pay anyway, is in complete contradiction to the ire expressed at the conservative right.
When you don't see anything wrong with one group of society FORCING their ideals on you ("I see no societal problem with helping our less fortunate" - Sykk), yet you moan and complain incessantly at the unfairness of the OTHER side trying to force THEIR morality on you, you walk the slippery slopes of a contradiction you can't escape from.

As appropriate as bopping someone on the nose because you cant think of a workable argument to their statement

Ultimately, intelligence is conveyed by the idea set forth, not the manner in which it is delivered. I don't see a Pulitzer in Serge's future, yet he knows how to cut to the quick of most matters.
Telling someone the "words" they used in a debate makes their argument weaker, as opposed to attacking the ideas themselves, puts you in a deep hole. Stick to the substance of the issue and not the delivery mechanism, and your ability to stay in the debate will grow.

I like the part where the Jews destroy an entire community and rape the female children.
Numbers 31:1-18: "...And they warred against the Midianites, as the Lord commanded moses, and they slew all the males. And the children of Israel took all the women of Midian captives, and their little ones...And they brought the captives, and the prey, and the spoil, unto Moses...And Moses was angry with the officers of the host And Moses said unto them, Have ye saved all the women alive? Behold, these caused the children of Israel, through the counsel of Ba'laam, to commit trespass against the Lord in the matter of Peor, and there was a plague among the congregation of the Lord. Now therefore kill every male among the little ones, and kill every woman that hath known man by lying with him. But all the female children, that have not known a man by lying with him, keep alive for yourselves."

What annoys me most about you Alex, is your constant confusing of your own perceptions with absolute facts.
"I believe what i believe because i happen to be right... not because i happen to be biased towards the left"
You are VERY Liberal... you percieve the world, politics and economic and social issues as a Liberal. Then you can't admit that your views are opinion, not fact and that your "opinion" is only shared by 50% or so of the population... which leaves you with the need to constantly attack the other 50% while claiming to be objective but coincidentally right all the time.
Its fine you know to say "I typically side with Liberal issues". You dont need to make up alleged facts to justify it. You dont need to twist reality to rationalize it. Your not alone you know. There is another 50% of 260,000,000 people in the US who share your views. It's ok to be you.

exactly. agree 100%
people defend their bias as being an objective decision. thats crazy. you are not objective if you are biased and you are not making objective decisions if you are biased.
i wish people would just stick to saying "this is what i am" without bizarre and horrbly inconsistent rationalizations for it.
if you are biased, you are not objectively deciding that you are liberal or conservative. you are instead percieving issues through the windows of that bias and intepreting everything consistent with that bias.

Uhm, last time I checked, when you publish a book, you are not made to defend it in order to get it published. When you present a degree seeking dissertation or thesis, yes, you will be made to defend it.

Quite honestly, I rarely read books to "learn". While there ARE some which I enjoy learning from, I almost always read for strictly for entertainment. My attention span is short so magazine, newspaper, internet articles hold my interest better and teach me more than reading a book would do.

Thankfully, per you, I obviously enjoy showing how dumb I am. B)
Of course, I'm hoping you don't equate learning from books specifically with "understanding" things. That would show a large amount of ignorance on your part as there are many illiterate people who "understand" more things than you and I combined. :awinky:
As you grow older, you will hopefully realize that different people learn things in different ways and being "book smart" is entirely different from having common sense/being "street smart". Sorry I don't have a clever Bible verse to back this up with - just a few years of experience. Maybe you could find one for me? :okthumb:

What does it mean "to love America," PD? Do you pass buildings and say to yourself, "Damn, that building completes me!"
Or does it have something to do with sharing a sense of belonging with this heterogenic population which all happens to reside inside specific geographical borders?
I neither love nor hate nor feel indifferently about "America."
I love living inside the geographic borders and interacting with many of the citizens of America, but I also have contempt for many of them.

Yes or no as to whether I believe ROI for the Soviet Union per 100k of population were less than that of the current American imprisonment binge?
Hmmmm
I am inclined to believe my professor, but as I personally have not seen the statistics of old style Soviet incarceration, I am hesitant. As I know any slip will result in you riding me like a cheap Mexican whore.
That being said, the stats I posted previous that showed Russia as slightly trailing the USA in ROI, are stats that I personally have read that says that post breakdown Russia has resulted in an increase in ROI. So, if Russia is still sitting behind the USA in ROI, and that is post Soviet collapse... hmmmm

Please consider it more a defense of my humble public school education.
I find the idea that private school education is automatically of more value than that from a public school patently absurd. Of more value on a resume, and of great value in networking - of course.
Frankly, the condescending arrogance that [labert] maintains in most of his posts isn't much different from yours in regards to public schools. Had I not read his posts I would have suspected private schools, perhaps Jesuits.

I am inclined to believe my professor, but as I personally have not seen the statistics of old style Soviet incarceration, I am hesitant.
There may be hope for you after all. :awinky:

I find the idea that private school education is automatically of more value than that from a public school patently absurd.
not for us, divorcees, who'd go EXTRA mile to keep poor children away from their stupid mothers

reading too deep is not good for discussion.

Reading what's posted is excellent for discussion, which is what I thought we were doing.....
no, youre going on about if i do or dont think reading equates blah blah blah and that knowledge is not found in books.
when all i did was say that i like to read a book more than once to make sure i grasp it, and in case i missed something.
i find it hard to communicate with someone who couldnt read the Divine Comedy more than once.

I proved that there are frauds in academia who make up stats and facts, something you said doesn't happen.
He taught at a university. Therefore, someone who taught at a university manufactured stats and facts.
You are an idiot. You can't win. You will never win.
How are your social justice classes going?
I have never heard of social justice. Stop making things up. Wait, look who I am asking.
I said you will not find rampant fraud "within" academia. Had his book gone before a review, as in an academic journal, it never would have made it to market and you wouldnt be able to dance around with it. He was a dumbfuck that thought because he was not subject to the checks and balances he would receive within academia he could further his agenda. Academia smoked him out.
If I started raping goats could you make the conclusion that goat raping is rampant in academia?
This is becoming redundant.

I find the idea that private school education is automatically of more value than that from a public school patently absurd. Of more value on a resume, and of great value in networking - of course.
Heck, imagine how confused I am - I went to private kindergarten, public school from 1-4th grade, private school from 5-11th grade, then graduated from a public school. :zoinks:
And then we have my poor son who went to public school until HS and then graduated from a Charter school.
We're lost souls - we don't know where we fit on the graph. :(
