Well, there have been lots of programs which does the same. (ex. ICQ Phone http://www.icq.com/icqphone/ , which is more advance, since you can also make pc2phone calls) The real problem with this setup is:

- If you need to call someone they also have to download and install the same software (ICQ Phone can make calls to normal phones - skype can not do this)

- You and the one you are talking with needs a microphone and speakers pluged into the computer (most new PCs do not include headsets/microphones, so surfers will have to go out and buy these)

IMO, Voice over IP will be big in a few years, but surfers need to buy headsets/microphones etc. and install software before this happens.

I have been playing with our voip phone from www.packet8.net for months.

works great, 20.00 per month, unlimited calls to any state and canada.

Ata device plugs in your network, cable, dsl, t-1, etc. Your reg. phone plugs in the ata, you get regular dial tones, voice mail, local #, etc.

Good thread! I've been wondering about this lately.

The commercials for Vonage are everywhere, plus I've read that Verizon and Cox Cable want to get into this. Plus, the FCC is trying to figure out how they can control this, if at all. With those kinds of players involved this is going to be huge. I remember trying DialPad a couple years ago through the computer and it was so-so.

So Todd, it sounds like you're happy with it. Who else has tried out VOIP technology here?

I think someone on GFY said Vonage was the best out there so far.

Not sure of the URL for that.

I have a 3 cent a minute phone card from Costco. Even though all my calls outside this tiny town are LD, I still don't pay anywhere near $20 a month.

packet8.net looks realy cool, especially their Freedom International Unlimited plans where you can call unlimited time to anyone in US/Europe/Asia for a flat fee. Unfortunately mobiles are not included in the flat rate :(

Would love to hear about similar/competing products...
