[Labret] - I take serious offensive with your US flag burning avatar
Now you may be trying to express something or making some statement I don't get
While I respect your right to burn the US flag I also reserve the right to plant my foot in your ass for doing so
Many people have served and died for the country, freedoms and other things that flag represents.
Your using that avatar disrespects the past 4 generations of my family along with millions of others
Your using an avatar of the US flag being burned is lacking in respect, distasteful and ignorant
If you have problems with this great nation either work to solve them ..... or get out

But in this case I like to challenge to put money where the mouth is to prove the lack of courage in their convictions

LOL Vick, I respect the way you express yourself I really do, But that avatar, although not offensive, makes me wana yack!! LOL guess my stomach is too weak to consider using a turkey leg in quite the same way>
as for Labret, I used to get livid when i saw someone, esp an American who benefits greatly by the rights afforded to them by the mere fact that they are US Citizens, burning any symbol of our freedom. I thought about the blood that paid for our freedoms, I think of the tenacity of our ancestors, and what it took to build this country into what it is. I think of how little respect it takes to do something so offensive to the great Americans of the past.
I used to get livid, now I recognize it for what it is. It is only ignorance and immaturity (irregarless of age). I view it as offensive as someone saying the word nigger. The word itself is powerless. We assign it its power by the affect it has on us personally. So to is the act of burning a flag. It is done to offend. Allowing it to have that effect gives power to the person who wishes that effect. I give them the power to offend (or piss me right the fuck off) by buying into their bullshit. I add credibility to their argument by allowing passions to get the better of me.
As for me, let him keep the avatar, let him revel in its beauty to him. Time will heal his eyes and he will see what he has done, and then it will matter.

My Grandfather served in WWII, he was on the first American ship into Tokyo Bay at the end of WWII, he is an artist and cabinetmaker.
He drew the postmark that was used for all mail coming from that ship. He still has envelopes with the postmark he drew that was printed on them

I told this story many times..
My grandfather's brother Michael left Russia to Palestine in 1911 because he didn't wanna serve in Russian Army.
In 1914 the WWI started and Ottoman Turks tried to get him into the Turkish Army.
He left his wife and son and went to America. He fell in love with USA and volunteered into US Army and died in Verden in 1918...

Vick & Serge, what can be said but 'WOW" honestly. When i read or hear stories of Americans who have served, or gave the Ultimate, its strange. Because as a Former serviceman myself, and as someone who was brought up to love our country. I always feel a special connection with them. A kinship, like they are a member of my family or something. Yes, I am proud to be associated with people like Vicks Grandfather and Serge's Great Uncle and thanks to you guys for sharing them with me. :okthumb:

OK, its a turkey leg on your sig Vick. I've been wondering what that was exactly.
On the subject of flag burning. Isn't that the ultimate expression of a country's freedom? Though I'm not a fan of it, it is a symbolism of and in itself.

Well, I don't know about the good old USA but in finland, when the flag gets dirty (touches the ground) it should be burned or buried. Same here in the USA about when a flag is dirty, has toughed the ground or is worn (or old) and I agree having a dirty or ripped flag flying in your yard is disrespectful
In the USA we are showing our unity and patriotism especially after the 9/11 tragedy
That's why you saw so many flags
But you still have to take in account burning the USA flag in protest is wrong and disrespectful

I study "life"? I study culture and society on a micro and macro level, art history, and human evolution. I fear something I will eventually receive a phd in? Instead of just being a passive sheap, I choose to understand why people "do the things they do". Its about fear, uh huh.

No thanks, I learn from others mistakes. If I ever end up like that I will consider my life a failure. I do not expect you to understand my way of life. wow.................that sentiment............difficult to adress.
The best descision I ever made was to be 'dragged down' by my wife and my kids. I happen to think that Einstein, Newton, Sagan & Hawking are the brightest minds in a field I laughingly have a lot of interest in. (laughable because intellectually I am not fit to polish their shoes). They have inspired me throughout my life. Caused me to comprehend things that blow my mind whenever I pause to think of them. Quantum Foam??? Singularities??? Amazing. I am in awe
yet I wouldnt trade an hour with my family for a lifetime with any of those great men (forget that they were/are socially challenged egotists, Brilliant, but assholes none the less. Well the noteable exception of Sagan, he was a nice guy but I digress
Family breeds a full happiness and contentment that I fear you wont experience, or will too late, when you too old to have fun with your son rough housing around, or beating the shit out of your daughters date hah hah Just kidding there.

I cannot believe you are as well educated as you claim , as you have attacked a perceived foe without any knowledge of said foe on the level you attack.
A plan that is probably moronic , certainly unwise and revealing of a flawed thought process rarely found in the higher levels of Educational Institutions.
For all you know I may be the overly educated son of a diplomat (free education I have heard is a perk of the job) who not only travelled extensively but may have attended an elite British School and passed high school at 15 ,I may have been offered a full scholarship at one of the worlds outstanding Universities at 16.
I may also be a high school drop out scraping a bear living submiting to tgps .

Real life uh? What might that be? Slow financial and emotional suicide with a wife and kids?
I live a dream life. I have met very few people who would not kill to be in my position. Young, rich, and highly educated... with no wife and kids dragging me down.

The best descision I ever made was to be 'dragged down' by my wife and my kids. Did either of you two receive any education outside of highschool?
For all you know I may be the overly educated son of a diplomat (free education I have heard is a perk of the job) who not only travelled extensively but may have attended an elite British School and passed high school at 15 ,I may have been offered a full scholarship at one of the worlds outstanding Universities at 16.
I may also be a high school drop out scraping a bear living submiting to tgps .
The fact is , you have no idea which , if either , is true.
So fuck off. :-)))

What will your thesis be on?
You seem to study much and yet have learned nothing.
Learned nothing?
Has anyone asked me anything regarding sociology or anthropology that I have missed?
Oh I get it... because I dont think like you two fucking idiots I must not have learned anything? And who exactly am I dealing with here?
Did either of you two receive any education outside of highschool?
My step-Aunt is an anthropologist - she has studied a lot - like you claim to have. She has had incredible jobs in places around the world, incredibly intelligent lady who can talk for house about her career ... she's studied in a lot of areas around anthropology and is considered a leader amongst her peers ...
Problem is, she's an obese 36 year old woman who lives at home with her mother - nobody from the real world gives a shit what she has to say because she is SO BORING ... She can't hold a conversation about anything other than her area of expertise & her entire family thinks she's a waste of space ... She doesn't know how to live on her own, can't cook, clean, hold a conversation, or do any of the things the rest of us do to relate to one another in society.
I can definately see that you would be greatly intelligent in your chosen field by the lack of intelligence in the rest of your personality ... like my mum says -
ALL BRAINS AND NO COMMON SENSE!!!!
I hope your life is happy & full labret & that we are just pieces in your game of chess - because otherwise, you are one fucked up MORON!! You make confucy look sane!

I wont go into all the mushy shit I feel every time I listen to my son spell a new word, or listen to the plans my oldest has to become a meteorologist (where the fuck did that come from?? I mean shit, the weather?) All I can say is in my opinion it is a mightily twisted view to compare children to a cancer.

I'm back ..... :D
Yes [Labret] I did start this thread and explained fully in my first post why I take offensive to your current avatar. I stand by and fully believe my statement (without even getting into how you can live the life you choose from the sacrifice other made and how ungrateful it is of you to display a burning flag, protest and change are good, disrespect is not).
However throughout this post you have revealed some rather unflattering things about yourself
If you think education (as evidenced by your any education beyond high school remark) only takes place in classrooms you are thoroughly missing out
Every minute of every day can be or is a learning experience and that I have to tell you that says volumes about your lack of intellect
Here's a prime example of where you have the intellect of a 20 year old
People only make the best of a bad situation. NOBODY wants children or even worse, a sadly demented person
Or maybe you live in or only have experienced situations where children were unwanted.
Did your parents want you?
Or did your parents feel like you were a cancer, do they treat you like you are a cancer?
That could explain your twisted, sad perspective
In healthy, normal, happy families children are planned. The joy they bring to our lives is immeasurable. The things we learn and share are part of life's journey and give joy to living
I didn't say I would break my foot off in your ass, I stated while I support anyone's right to burn the US flag I reserve the right to plant my foot in anyone's ass doing so
You're a sad, sad little man. You remind me of the line in the movie Hook "You need a Mommy"
Yes I am being a little harsh on you but you need to broaden your horizons and need a serious reality check
and what Nick said about being the mark ........

I know Labret never pretend to be anything other than who he is, an EXTREMELY opinionated person. He's one of those guys you either love or hate. There aren't really shades of gray in there.
He usually has something worth reading though, even if you don't agree. Just because someone has a different perspective on things doesn't neccessarily mean they are wrong. It just means they are different.

Different views on the USA is fine, it's part of what keeps the USA growing
It's easy to burn a flag, what's hard is to work for the changes you feel are right or necessary
Why he is sad and demented are the statements about children being like cancer and the delusional thinking that no children are planned
Also he doesn't get that education is not only found in the classroom (as evidenced by his statement, and yes I have formal education beyond high school)
As for my horizons, I'm good with then but always like to be introduced to new ideas and concepts. We all always have room for growth
and to Quote Forest Gump "That's all I got to say about that"

Just because someone has a different perspective on things doesn't neccessarily mean they are wrong. It just means they are different.
LadyMischief - With all due respect I strongly disagree
By your logic someone with the perspective that mass murder is good and should be committed is just different and not wrong
(I could have used a lot of different examples so please don't get hung up on the mass murder thing - fill in any deplorable act)
But to those people, it may not be wrong. Of course, by societal standards it isn't. He is still entitled to his opinion though. It's how he acts on them that defines appropriateness.

Thinking a wife and kids are a drag is not deplorable though.
Beating your wife is deplorable. Having kids you don't pay attention to is deplorable.
Not wanting to have either is not.
I actually have more respect for someone who says they do not want children because they are not willing or fitted to being a parent than those who have kids only to realize that this is the case after the fact.

Basically you're saying there is no right and wrong
It wasn't a matter of saying one didn't want children, it is equating children with having leukemia along with other statements
Thanks Diamond Jim, you succinctly explained my position

And I should mention, maybe it is his opinion that children are equivalent to having a serious disease. That's his RIGHT to hold that opinion, and even to share it, just as it is our right to disagree with it. If he went around killing children, THAT would be another matter altogether, see what I mean?

[labert] usually has something worth reading though, even if you don't agree. Just because someone has a different perspective on things doesn't necessarily mean they are wrong. It just means they are different.
First of all, there must be sufficient wheat IN the chaff to make separating it worthwhile. Upon occasion I have seen some signs of intelligent life in his posts. However, most are simply sanctimious "hipper than thou" (or smarter than thou, or more educated that thou, or I am more "all that" than thou). It didn't take long reading his drivel on GFY to learn that it just wasn't worth it. He, like a couple of others, has shown me nothing different over here.
As far as the whole "different perspective on things" goes, I agree with that up to a point. However, it doesn't apply here. He didn't say "I don't want a wife and kids because I wouldn't treat them right." He described children as a cancer that no one really wants. Now, you can sugar coat that all you want, but operating under the non-academic (but time tested) "it looks like shit and it smells like shit" method, I, for one, need no greater empirical proof that it is, in fact, fecal matter.
Regarding the issue that started the thread off - I don't care much to see ANY flag (except those that have taken up arms against the United States and its constitution) burned. Unlike Vick, I don't think has avatar is an attempt to make any kind of statement whatsoever. I think its a blatant attempt to annoy people, pure and simple - kind of a "spitball on the blackboard while the teacher is writing on it" action.
The simple fact of the matter is, for all his contempt for the "sheep" (regular folks) that he expresses, on the boards he plays such a stereotypical example of the elitist embittered academic that he probably couldn't get a role in a sitcom on the Fox network.

Labret you're right in a way, but you're also very far-off from the truth.
It *can* be what you've said above. And some days it feels like it. But everything is a choice and no one has to settle for a mediocre job or saddle themselves with credit card debt or even live in a smothering suburban hellhole.
The family thing, though - really, what is the use of everything you have when you've no one to share it with? No one to pass on your knowledge to?
I've been there. Where you are, and where I am. The hellhole that you think family life is. I've been single, planning on pretty much being a student for the rest of my life. Alone and disdainful.
I've been stuck in a hellhole with a person who thought the best he could do was to get a supervisory position at the dusty box he worked at. We riddled ourselves with debt that it took me 10 years to get rid of.
And now I'm here - no debt whatsoever. My home is paid for. My minivan is paid for. The only bills I have are for utilities and food. Two kids and another on the way. A husband who is devoted to me, and I to him - even though there are times when we could kill each other. :)
And I tell you with all honesty and the experience of what you are now... this is better. So much better. One day you'll wake up and you'll realize that. All of the money in the world, all of the knowledge in the world... it's nothing when you're alone and lonely.
Maybe when you leave and you're not so focused on finishing your degree it will just hit you. Unexpected and so strong it will totally rip you off of your feet.
I just hope that when it does, you'll embrace it - and her. For your own sake.

Alone? Just because I do not want a wife and kids? I have no aversion to relationships, in fact, I have a problem with getting myself into them. In the last 10 years I have had two. One that lasted 6 years and one that lasted 3 years. Unlike most people though, the end result of relationships (for me) are not children or marriage.
I learn from others mistakes. In a country with a 50% divorce rate and child neglect at an all time high, many many people should not be married, and even more of them should not have children. Everyone knows at least a few people that should not have children but sadly, do. So I am doing my part for humanity. I will not unleash upon the world another fat stupid lazy American. I should be given an award for that.
I have met very very few men my age who are happily married. Their lives are dull and meaningless. Marriage and kids and spending your life subservient to them in order to be perceived as a "good man", is a pitfall that I will avoid.
Thank you for your concern, but I will not die "alone". Just as I am not alone now.

Actually LM ... no its not the defining factor.
I don't want children either - I share a lot of the same views on the amount of children on this planet as Labret does ...
I think that people should stop having children for the sake of it ...
I think parents should stop behaving like they have achieved something special by giving birth & should stop expecting to be congratulated because they buy nappies & take kids to soccer practice when it was their choice to put penis in vagina in the first place ...
I think that we should stop teaching children to want to grow up and have more children & should spend more time teaching them how to live a happy & fulfilling life themselves before breeding ...
I think that A LOT of children are accidents and that those parents do their best to pretend that its what they wanted out of life all along and then later in life become resentful towards their children for preventing them from achieving their goals ...
I think a lot of people become parents to make up for their own failures & end up creating children who are even more fucked up than they are ...
These are my opinions and they definately aren't fact - i can even think of opposing arguments to my own opinions!!
The defining factor is that Labret has actively gone out of his way to make sweeping blanket statements that he knows will offend the recipient, and then sits back rubbing his hands with glee while refusing to give any reasoning for his opinions ... obviously Labret is deliberately trying to make people angry, so what are you expecting from those whose emotions he is stirring? Kisses & hugs?!
Yes, he has a right to do all of the above and I couldn't give a fuck whether he continues or not - but let him defend himself, don't do it on his behalf by arguing his points for him, they are your interpretations and do nothing to give him any credit! Let him come back into the carnage he has caused & show us all his dazzling intelligence ... we are all eagerly awaiting and he might find he could even learn something from the 'old farts' around here ;-)
Or, if this is all too much trouble Labret ... there's always that other board!!!

I totally agree with this statement
I think that A LOT of children are accidents and that those parents do their best to pretend that its what they wanted out of life all along and then later in life become resentful towards their children for preventing them from achieving their goals ...
Both of my boys were not planned. So i guess that makes them 'accidents' by some peoples standards. I can say with all honesty that for me, both were happy accidents if accidents at all. & as for being resentful towards children later in life? I cannot comprehend such a thing. There are a lot of people that one could be resentful towards for an unhappy life, but ones own children.............to quote Princess Bride
"INCONCEIVABLE!!"
I think a lot of people become parents to make up for their own failures & end up creating children who are even more fucked up than they are ...
hahaha spaz<-------------- living proof that this argument is WRONG, at least as far as it applies to me. I was the most fucked up person I knew when my first son was born. I graduated HS, barely, got out of the USMC, and was digging ditches for a living (anyone remember the old saying 'things could be worse. I could be diging ditches for a living.'? well I was. For $4.35 an hour this was 14 years ago). I was uneducated, ignorant, self centered and all in all a complete waste of flesh. waiting to die in an industrial accident or something. The moment my first son was born everything changed. It was a flash. I openly weeped in public. It was overwhelming, that feeling I felt. For the first time in my entire stinking life I knew what responsibility was. It changed me for the better. Did I g on to collegeand better my education? Nope, hard reality was I wouldnt have been able to afford it before my son was born, that certainly didnt change after I had him. But, in a flash I decided that this child would NOT share the same fate as his father. And thus far, he has had the success in school that I never had. And grades are extremely important in this house. I credit my having kids with the successes I have had since his birth because it is the drive I have to provide better for my family that happily inspires me to achieve more. That ditch digger has his days of a 6 firgure income. I dont have that now, but I and my wife (whom I have been married to going on 17 years) are hard at work trying to achieve it again. Not all that easy to do when your only a couple of high school grads surrounded by the 'best & brightest' of their generations, but we dont do so bad.
Kids are not for everyone. Everyone has heard the wicked stepmother routine, or the stoies of people who abuse their kids. If someone truely feels that having children is not for them, then I for one respect that, even if I am unable, due to the positive influences it has had in my life, to understand their descision. But referring to children as a cancer like Labret did. is wrong. I am not angered by what he said, not at all, but I have always viewed anyone whose sole intent is to offend to be an intellectual inferior to myself. & I am a lowly high school grad of the American public school system. Intelligent conversation is meant to enlighten, not anger. Ican passionately debate my point of view without trying to offend the person who disagrees with me. Offending doesnt show intellect, IT shows laziness.
spaz <-----------proud to be a fat lazy American

CJ you're right, it's my opinion. I've been on both sides though. It's WAY different when it's your own kids. :)
I never wanted kids. Hated them. My nickname for them was "small stupid humans". Ooh, what brats they all were. Babies were cute - as long as you could give them back, LOL. I was never going to have one, let alone three.
And then one day it all changed. Maybe it was just Fate looking over my shoulder and keeping me from getting stuck in that first hellhole I was talking about and protecting me until things were right. I dunno.
But it all just changed. It was weird.

Labret, there is NOTHING to debate about,
like it or not, but USA is a free country,
you can do whaever you like withing the law and what's there to debate?
You wanna be a rebel without the cause and get a rise out of the crowd?

Anywho, I wake up and it is still the same boo hoo'ing that was going on when I went to bed. Its funny, I am still overwhelmingly labeled an unintelligent fool by the Oprano short bus riders association, yet nobody will explain precisely why.

Offensive to some, a powerful statement to others. Of course I knew the avatar would get an ugly response from the kneejerk reactionaries. And nothing makes me laugh harder than the bleating of fools who lack the ability to coherently respond to the flood of emotion, Vick for example. The avatar was made for simians like him/her. We study this a lot in soc, its called ethnomethodology.
Nobody with any sense would be offended by it. When I see someone burning a flag I am more inclined to ask them why, not kneejerk. The inability to control that sort of reaction is a sign of lack of intelligence.
State your opinions without name calling and you may possibly pass as someone with an education AND intelligence.
Sorry, no can do in this instance. The thread started with name calling, it shall end the same way. Like I could have an intelligent debate with Vicky? Cmon now. I spend all day nearly every day in debate, no need to tell me what debate requires. It is all I do.

You must be confusing me with Lord Fletch (PBUH), I am not a drinker. I mean, I do drink, but its been a rather lackluster month for me in the partying department. If I was drunk my posts would be much much more vitriolic.
Apologies? For what? Offending my inferiors? Their very existence offends me. Vick should apologize to me for being alive.
edit, ahhh the GFY thread. You explain to me Russian prison immigration and I will explain that thread. Deal?

[Labret] - there's one thing we agree on
You shouldn't reproduce
You're narrow minded and ignorant. Hiding behind a supposed education and keeping yourself immersed in academia because you can't cope in or with a real world.
As you cry of your supposed superiority you expose your feelings of inferiority
Big man, pig man, ha ha, charade you are
You well heeled big wheel, ha ha, charade you are
And when your hand is on your heart
You're nearly a good laugh
Almost a joker
With your head down in the pig bin
Saying "keep on digging"
Pig stain on your fat chin
What do you hope to find?
When you're down in the pig mine
You're nearly a laugh
You're nearly a laugh
But you're really a cry.

The inability to control that sort of reaction is a sign of lack of intelligence.
There is no tie in between emotional response and intelligence level that would back that up. In fact, I believe that you will find that if you compared the emotional ("kneejerk") response of a highly intelligent group against that of a "normal" intelligence group, you will find the more intelligent group to have the stronger emotional "kneejerk" reaction. You will also find a much higher concentration of neuroses and psychoses among the group with the higher intelligence. So, an uncontrollable emotional response ("kneejerk") may actually be a sign of the presence of intelligence.

Fine, I will cover this again. Reading comprehension does not appear to be your strong point. Try and follow along this time.
Immersed in academia because I fear the real world.
As if you have even the slightest inkling what a life in academia requires. Like it is just some fantasy world where we lock ourselves in small rooms with little or no human contact? For the last time, I study people. Psychologists study the mind, physicians study the body, we study culture. How many psychiatrists and physicians you know that do not deal with the subject matter on a daily basis? Why would my field be any different? Does this make any sense at all to you? Would you say that psychiatrists and physicians are just hiding from this "real world" idea that you posit? What is this real world you keep blathering about? And fear the real world? I find your world fascinating, so much so I choose to spend my life studying why it even exists and how and why it functions. Your ignorant ass does not even give these things a second thought, yet I am the one living in fear?
Why even debate what academia is with me when you have absolutely no idea what it even requires? Humor me and tell me what my day involves.
As you cry of your supposed superiority you expose your feelings of inferiority
I am surrounded by people that dwarf me intellectually on a daily basis. Its the nature of the beast. I do not brow beat them for being smarter than me, instead I strive to be like them and learn from them. I pay a lot for this type of abuse. It makes me stronger. You fear and loathe those smarter than you, I respect them. Inferiority, you know it well.
Can we hear about your childhood? Were you abandoned or had feeling of abandonment?
Totally boring and uneventfull. Parents married 34 years so far, 2 sisters, no abuse, no drugs. Raised in both a rural and urban environments. Father blue collar shipyard worker, mom a typical housewife. Anything else?
and one day let's start a new thread just for music discussion
Trust me, if Pink Floyd is the pinnacle for you, you will have no idea what the hell I will even be talking about.

Don't even try to twist my words.
I never said a thing about academia.
For you to assume that my mentioning of groups of higher intelligence means "academia" is naive at best and arrogant as all hell at worst.
As far as the first part of my post, let me state it more clearly. I do not think you will find any studies that will back up your statement that "The inability to control that sort of reaction is a sign of lack of intelligence.".
However, I believe that if you check, you might find some studies that will back up my assertion that you will find a higher propensity towards aqn emotional response from a higher intelligence group then a lower intelligence group.

As far as the first part of my post, let me state it more clearly. I do not think you will find any studies that will back up your statement that "The inability to control that sort of reaction is a sign of lack of intelligence.
As someone who deals with intelligent people on a daily basis, I can tell you that kneejerking and lashing out during a debate is considered poor form in the extreme. In fact, in most cases, if you can be the one who caused the other person to lose their cool so to speak while maintaining your own, it is considered a victory of sorts.
Losing control over your ability to control yourself in the face of adversity is not an admirable trait. Society generally respects a level head. You will never see George Bush calling anyone a "dumb fuck".
For you to assume that my mentioning of groups of higher intelligence means "academia" is naive at best and arrogant as all hell at worst.
Oh, you were referring to those roaming hordes of highschool educated geniuses?
However, I believe that if you check, you might find some studies that will back up my assertion that you will find a higher propensity towards aqn emotional response from a higher intelligence group then a lower intelligence group.
I am not saying you wont get a reaction from people who are considered of higher intelligence, but it sure as hell will be different. Billy Bob and Scooter witnessing a flag burning will have a different response then someone with a phd in behavioral psychology.
Ill just wait for whatever you dredge up from google before I continue.

b - thank you
c - This is a somewhat intelligent conversation, it is going on currently between at least 3 (maybe someday 4) people with minds I have admiration and respect for

We are not homo sapien. We are homo sapien sapien. One sapien denotes archaic forms. No surprise you put yourself in that category.
I find your belief in diversity to be quaint and charming.

That is one thing I will say you are correct about and I was wrong
But it was very nit picky
I agree with the sentiment expressed here, can't wait until you leave the US again

In fact, in most cases, if you can be the one who caused the other person to lose their cool so to speak while maintaining your own, it is considered a victory of sorts.
Growing up, we called this "ranking"... One upping an opponent until they got pissed off and resorted to either personalized profanity or violence.
Same game, different stage.
Losing control over your ability to control yourself in the face of adversity is not an admirable trait. Society generally respects a level head. You will never see George Bush calling anyone a "dumb fuck".
I bet you I can find a clip of him saying something close.
I can find tapes of Nixon losing it on a regular basis, Clinton, Johnson.. Many of the politicians of our time had a terribly short fuse... They had handlers to keep the public from seeing that side...
It may not be an admirable trait, but that does not mean it is not common. Why do so many of the "intelligentsa" work behind closed doors, with their only contact with the outside being their published writings. Because they do not know how to deal with people, they are scared of the outside world, they have paranoia running at levels well above the rest of the folks.
Oh, you were referring to those roaming hordes of highschool educated geniuses?
No, I was referring to the many people who are not part of academia.. The doctors, the lawyers, the engineers, the system designers, the programmers, the mailmen, the garbage men and the many other people in this world who may be of higher than normal intelligence but who choose to go out into the scarey world and live it rather than sit behind the scenes and study it.
I am not saying you wont get a reaction from people who are considered of higher intelligence, but it sure as hell will be different. Billy Bob and Scooter witnessing a flag burning will have a different response then someone with a phd in behavioral psychology.
Not necessarilly. Depends on the people. I have known many very intelligent people who held very closeminded opinions. I have also known many blue collar "normal" intelligence level folks who were extremely open minded. That has nothing to do with intelligence per se. There are many extremely intelligent people who believe in God and Jesus and a spiritual afterlife, whether that belief would seem logical to me or not. The belief systems of a person often shape many of their outwardly shown viewpoints of the world.

Also, to lump all of academia into one group is absurd. Comparing people doing graduate work in art history to people doing graduate work in forestry and genetics, you are dealing with two very different crowds.
To stereotype or lump every American into one group is not equally absurd?

So you qualify us Fat Lazy Americans when given the oppurtunity. Don't you think the others who are discussing all this with you may feel that their sweeping generalizations would be qualified as well? I mean in the heat of debate it is normal to generalize to some extent to make a point. Pointing out the generalizations of others begs your own to be brought to the forefront as well.

in all honesty, I ask nothing more than for consistancy of standards. If you generalize, be preapred for others to do so as well. As for your views on terrorism or terrorist, those are your views and I have my own. I do not express them here because they would be easily misunderstood. Not because the people here are not smart as hell, they have a proven track record, but due entirely to my inability to express myself clearly.

I firmly believe in America, as a great nation we are not without challenges. Any situation can be improved
As I have stated it is much easier to point the finger than work to correct the challenges
It is the weak who only complain and do nothing to improve the situation, causes and conditions of which they complain
and my reaction to [Labret] avatar is what started this (somewhat) interesting conversation
I don't consider myself a flag waving knee jerk, I am a patriotic American
Very grateful for the opportunities being an American affords. Also I am extremely grateful to all those who have gone before to enable these liberties and opportunities I enjoy

Why would I have abandonment issues if my parents are still married and I still see them often?
As a student of sociology your response here baffles me.
It is not simply the physical presence of your parents that prevent feelings of abandonment, but also emotional attachment.
Your father could be attending to all of his responsibilities and duties as a father and husband, but still leave you feeling as if he doesn't care a thing about you.
Your mother could stay home and care for you night and day, making sure you have food to eat and clean clothes to wear, but still make you feel as if you're unwanted.
Just because your parents are still together and you see them often doesn't mean that there is no chance of abandonment issues. Actually, your views of marriage and family speak loudly of your unhappiness with your childhood and deep-seated issues of abandonment and neglect.

The only nuke going off will hopefully be a dirty one in the Mall of America around xmas time.
I am surprised you actually think the United States would use tactical nukes. Perhaps if they found out Iran was harboring Bin Laden and found at the nuke came from them and they had more on the way. I just dont see it happening. Bush is an idiot, but I fail to believe after the failure in Afghanistan and Iraq that he would be so haphazard. Esp before an election.

I am not a psychologist. I deal with culture. Perhaps if my area was more of juvenile delinquency I would understand abandonment as some sort of predictor of deviant social behavior, and then it would fall into my area. But as it sits now my emphasis is in popular culture.

Use a nuke on whom exactly? Nuking the middle east for the actions of some Queda affiliates based out of Malaysia (or wherever) makes as much sense as nuking Ohio.
incorrect....psychological effect and NEW political realities after the fact is what keeps American soil from terrorists...plus...Malaysia is equal distance for balistic missile
;-))))
The only nuke going off will hopefully be a dirty one in the Mall of America around xmas time.
I am surprised you actually think the United States would use tactical nukes. Perhaps if they found out Iran was harboring Bin Laden and found at the nuke came from them and they had more on the way. I just dont see it happening. Bush is an idiot, but I fail to believe after the failure in Afghanistan and Iraq that he would be so haphazard. Esp before an election.
Just because your parents are still together and you see them often doesn't mean that there is no chance of abandonment issues. Actually, your views of marriage and family speak loudly of your unhappiness with your childhood and deep-seated issues of abandonment and neglect.
Oops, missed that one.
I would think my strong family bonds and being around their happy marriage for 18 years would have a positive impact on me.
My views on marriage and children are a result largely of witnessing the failure of others and the anthropological / sociological theories of why they even exist. Study them and you will see just how arbitrary and absurd the institution of marriage and nuclear family is. Both concepts are relatively new and are not a natural occurrence amongst humans.

I am not a psychologist. I deal with culture. Perhaps if my area was more of juvenile delinquency I would understand abandonment as some sort of predictor of deviant social behavior, and then it would fall into my area. But as it sits now my emphasis is in popular culture.
I really suggest you study it, then. You'd most likely find it fascinating.
Culture is shaped and defined by the people, and people form their realities based on perceptions from childhood.
Quick example for the holidays - kids who were brought up in homes where holidays were a time for large family gatherings and feelings of belonging to something larger than themselves often pass on those same traditions and rituals to their children, forming a macro-culture within the culture of society.
As families become larger and people have more children (what we see happening now), these types of celebrations become more commonplace, and incrementally that macro-culture expands to become society's culture itself. It becomes expected to "go home for the holidays" and partake in large family gatherings.
We're moving back into this direction now, away from where we have been for the past twenty years or so; with smaller families and children far away from their parents, not returning for the holidays, etc. These people (on average) were brought up where career was more important than family and the entire mindset of the "me" generation left children feeling alone and unwanted, especially during the holidays when they'd watch tv movies of everyone around the christmas dinner table. Those kids grew up and changed our culture for nearly 20 years, and now it's changing back as they get older and less focused on themselves.

The institution of marriage is a relatively new concept if you look at history from the time that we were running around in animal skins communicating in guttural noises. :awinky:
However, we've evolved far beyond that and comparing then vs. now is unrealistic. If we're to make any changes, or even learn anything, we have to look at a smaller timeline.
Speaking of making changes - if you are so unhappy with the country and the people in it, why just give up and leave? Why not try to make a change? Teach, run for office, form grassroots actions for the party that is closest to matching your "vision" of what America should be?
Simply leaving is rather defeatist, don't you think?

Coupling is nothing new no. Some sort of heavenly sanctified bond resulting in a subservient other is relatively new. The creation of adolescence, the idea of the housewife, and the myriad of other institutions that have sprung up as a result of their creation is only a result of industrialization. Very new.
Speaking of making changes - if you are so unhappy with the country and the people in it, why just give up and leave? Why not try to make a change? Teach, run for office, form grassroots actions for the party that is closest to matching your "vision" of what America should be?

Simply, I do not want to waste my time on Americans. They have squandered their inheritance and they will wallow in their own ignorance and suffer the consequences. I welcome it, I do not want to prevent it.
I debated becoming a teacher, turning out generations of little Marxists, but it would be fruitless. I would much rather watch nature take its course. They may come around, but it is going to come at a very serious price.
Like Forest mentioned earlier, there are many up and comers so to speak on the world stage. Dirt poor, highly educated, with a desire to make a change. I would much rather take my chances with them. Much more rewarding.

Funny, a couple of Maoists told me 30 years ago that I was "of the type" that they would shoot first too. As to who would or wouldn't get shot, I just want you assume that I'm anti-gun/anti-violence because I'm left of center.

I know, that is a common theme for you in your critique of me. Dont understand it, dont much care either. Its pure conjecture, its not like I am going to run into the street and shoot the next hick I see to prove otherwise.
True though, I probably wouldnt want such a hands on approach. I think the Chechens and their remote work is brilliant. Puts the terror back in terrorism, without the up close mess.

Some all-hot half-shot was headin' for the hot spot snappin' his fingers clappin' his hands
And some fleshpot mascot was tied into a lover's knot with a whatnot in her hand
And now young Scott with a slingshot finally found a tender spot and throws his lover in the sand

He says: "Dethrone the dictaphone, hit it in its funny bone, that's where they expect it least"
And some new-mown chaperone was standin' in the corner all alone watchin' the young girls dance
And some fresh-sown moonstone was messin' with his frozen zone to remind him of the feeling of romance
Some silicone sister with her manager's mister told me I got what it takes
She said I'll turn you on sonny to something strong if you play that song with the funky break
And go-cart Mozart was checkin' out the weather chart to see if it was safe to go outside
And little Early-Pearly came in by her curly-wurly and asked me if I needed a ride
Oh, some hazard from Harvard was skunked on beer playin' backyard bombardier
Yes and Scotland Yard was trying hard, with a calling card,
he said, do what you like, but don't do it here
Well I jumped up, spit in the air, fell on the ground, asked wich was the way back home
He said take a right at the light, keep going straight until right, and then boy you're on your own

I advocate nothing short of a bloody revolution where I can drag people like you into the streets and dump a round into the back of your head.
IRL you don't have the sack for it
On a message board you can say it for fun and a reaction
IRL I have the feeling you'd be hiding deep in the old folks smell
:biglaugh:
Never was sure how to respond to conjecture such as this, esp after Serge already said it and I replied to it. I suppose I can kneejerk and threaten to bury a screwdriver into your skull, but that would be silly.
Much the same way that if your old ass was ever standing before me I can assure you the last thought on your mind would be sticking your "foot up my ass". Cut back on the geritol gramps.
manfred man and floyd. Total nightmare.
You are lost ah ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha
It's Springsteen and in this case the writing is phenomenal
Do you get the rhyming scheme (and the couplets)?
Much less the tendering of subject matter
The funnier part is you don't know how young I am ah ha ha ha ha ha
I'd love to see the post you edited, do you have the sack to bring it back?
funny, google says differently.

Manfred, Springsteen, all suck so in the end it doesnt matter. Lyrics by: Bruce Springsteen
Sack? Its a message board, you require a sack to talk shit?

And while Lennon read a book of Marx
The quartet practiced in the park
And we sang dirges in the dark
The day the music died
We were singin' ...
Bye-bye, Miss [Labret] Pie
Drove my chevy to the levee
But the levee was dry
And them good old boys were drinking' whiskey and rye
Singin' this'll be the day that I die
You're wrong. Springsteen penned "Blinded by the Light" in 1973 on his first album "Greetings from Asbury Park" - actually a very well written album - I don't much care for Springsteen's later work
Manfred Mann later had a hit with their cover of it (around 1979 I believe)
ah ha ha ha ha ha
So bring back your edited post

Wow... miss a weekend - miss a LOT! I promise never to be AFK this long again. Whew! What a LOT of reading - and well worth it!
Good thread guys... oh and Vick, thanks for clarifying what that "thing" was in your avatar. Ewwww. And... I like your NEW avatar. Nice change! The psycho clown was scaring me way before the creepy turkey leg ever did.
The new one is Professor Snape in his classroom, I actually bear a slight resemblance to Snape currently

It's bad form to make physical threats on a message board, no body needs keyboard warriors
That being said I guess we won't know unless it ever happens IRL
and that would be a very poor choice on your part

Vick, it's ALL in the adrenalin...
I once lifted me ex's ex husband who was 200 pounds more than me and threw him out of the door...
the ONLY way to find what one can or can't do is...do it.

Yeap - that and how bad do you want it or how much does it mean to you
We've all seen overachievers who achieve because it means that much to them :awinky:

No need to be sorry
That's why there are different flavors of Ice Cream
I throughly enjoy the writing as McLean metaphorically describes how Rock died to him with the coming of the Beatles/the 60's and the end of the 50's era music - no more sock hops :( and many other meaningful things
For me it is an amazing piece of work

People's reactions towards Labret are always entertaining and educational. Labret has excellent debating skills, and I've always enjoyed reading threads involving his thoughts.
These boards would be fairly boring places if they were full of people that shared your opinions.

well said and very true
One thing has occurred to me, Labret is educated but is like ....
.... a man who thinks he is the best sex in the world because he has studied sex for 10 years ......
.... but has never had sex
What Labret has shared here thus far is all (theory) from study and no practical experiences or application
and it's doesn't matter if you studied sex from people who have had the most amazing documented sexual experiences ....
.... it's not the same until you do it yourself
I used sex as an example because it's something everyone can relate to

Hmm.. I have to disagree with you there. I haven't seen any posts by labret that would indicate he has no practical experience. You only say that. :)
edit: bad wording.

I find it interesting how all these Labret threads can manage to be so long and yet are always full of people that declare that they don't care about Labret, his opinions mean nothing, and he lacks intelligence.
In the next "Labret is an idiot" thread, the same people will be back to declare that they don't care about Labret, his opinions mean nothing, and he lacks intelligence.
Why do people make it a habit to repeatedly engage someone they feel is an unintelligent meaningless individual?

TGF - if you read though al the conversations Labret often references studies but never actual field work
- see the top of this thread for an example
witnessing the failure of others and the anthropological / sociological theories of why they even exist
Not that he had an actual relationship (which he said he had 2) or interviewed anyone from a relationship
Or 2 references to "Members of Frankfurt School" in This Thread (http://www.oprano.com/msgboard/index.php?act=ST&f=1&t=7494&s=23f7cf9415c8d82daf3f9a968da73073) but no evidence of field work or practical experience such as being an A & R person or being chosen as a consultant for his knowledge in the field
TGF do you have any funny pics (or more stories), you're really good with those - like maybe one of you in the Ballerina outfit you mentioned earlier :biglaugh:
BRISK - I'll now say he is educated but lacking in actual experience and see my post above for further thoughts on the subject
