BEIJING — Raising the stakes in an already tense situation, China threatened in remarks published Wednesday that "the use of force may become unavoidable" if Taiwan pursues independence -- the mainland's strongest statement in years against its archrival.

IMHO China is being very smart,

USA already extended with the Middle East.

Perfect time for it to go hard against Taiwan.

USA will protest and complain but take no military action.

If they do take action , we are all fucked.

The begining of the rise of the next superpower?

China has been beefing up its military at an alarming rate.
When Clinton extended them an open hand they came over here and studied our technology and the way we teach/structure our military extensively. Now they're running academies like Annapolis and Westpoint and focusing on putting technically trained specialists into their forces... and it's paying off.
They've also ordered a fleet of highly advanced submarines with parts made in France and Germany - the first of which is scheduled for delivery in 2005 IIRC. These subs will use fuel cells that will allow them to stay down longer and titanium hulls that will allow them to go deeper, as well as a highly modified propulsion system that will be nearly impossible to detect unless our guys get more funding to research/build sonar arrays that can hear them.

When WWIII comes, it *will* be with China - and they're beefing up for it - the question is merely who will be standing on the opposing side.

We are seriously and overly dependent on China for so many manufactured goods now its frightening. The US decided long ago to fuck the manufacturing workers here in the ass and go with slave labor in China. Pickup practically anything in your house these days and its says Made in China on it.

On top of slave and prison labor, China manipulates its currency to give it an edge costwise over competing US made goods.

However we are China's biggest customer for trade so that does give us quite a bit of economic clout back at that them.

I think they have the balls to go for it on Taiwan, knowing our military is politically stretched to its limits right now. Maybe a little push to the island even just to test our fortitude and response.

This is a very dangerous situation.

Hmmmm. China has the "caterpillar."

Capt. Ramius: Verify our range to target....One ping only.
Borodin: Aye, sir.
Capt. Ramius: Give me a ping, Vasily. One ping only please!

Ramius: We will pass through the American patrols, pass their sonar nets and lay off their largest city and listen to their rock-n-roll as we conduct missile drills.

When Clinton extended them an open hand they came over here and...

If Pavlov lived today he wouldn't need drooling dogs ...

If you really think they needed to come over here to study the structures of Annapolis or West Point, or read up on contemporary tactics, you obviously have never run across publications like the Naval Institute's "Proceedings" magazine (and the Army and Air Force have comprable pubs). Yes, they stole some technology, and yes, it happened during the Clinton Administration. If you are inclined to believe that Clinton somehow WANTED or ALLOWED it to happen, you are the on port side; fortunately, the folks who believe that Bush allowed 9/11 are on the starboard side, so the short bus is balanced.

China is the reason that I think McRumsfeld is way off base in a lot of his plans to "lean down" the military. Fancy-schmacy "spec ops" forces are great to have, and very necessary - but they will not replace heavy divisions.

China is going to be a strategic competitor of the US in the years to come. China is only a regional power, not even close to being a Superpower.

One thing about the Chinese is they normally do not make any hasty moves, they tend to look at the big picture and take their time - they see history in milliniums not decades.

The reality is, the Chinese could not successfully seize Tawain, even without US support. The Chinese could destroy Tawain but they could not invade and hold the island. This would do NO ONE anygood, incuding the Chinese. They understand Tawain could be of great benefit to them.

The US Military is strung out through out the world, and especially in the Middle East, but we could inflict major damage on China. I am sure our President's have extended our nuclear umbrella to include Tawain.

China is definately a long term issue we must deal with, past President have not been tough enough on China. Short term we have a bigger problem, one we share with China islamic fundamentalism and terrorism.

The chinese better watch out for India as well....

You can talk about Clinton all you want - I never particularly cared for him very much myself. I would defend GW from the sort of bullshit statements you make.

It's the irrational way you talk about Clinton, Carrie ... "Clinton gave away the secrets of our military academies", "Clinton deliberately caused the [current] economic downturn to make whoever succeeded him look bad."

Like I said - it's cut from the same cloth as "Bush allowed 9/11".

No one ever said I had to be politically correct when speaking about Clinton, and I don't plan to start simply because you don't like what I say about him.
The man made a fucking joke of our country, he performed things that I too consider traitorous, and he took the "role model" of the Presidency and smashed it under his pasty fat ass.

I could pretty up my comments and say that he "extended a warm welcome to the Chinese to share information globally and help a country that was not as militarily advanced as us", but I'm not an ass-kisser. He fucked us - in more ways than one.

Forgive me for calling a kettle black - I'm not going to say that it's "light-reflective-challenged". If that's what YOU want to do, that's fine; but to me the people who live their lives in Clinton's Politically Correct "define what 'is' is" world are the ones who are riding the short bus.

Golly gee, Carrie ... you did well shoehorning "politically correct" in there. What's next - "liberal moron"?* Not that being politically correct has anything to do with it- it's another part of the salivation response to the little bell, I suppose.

Nobody is disputing your right to post your opinions about Clinton on this board. I'm not going to treat you any differently than I treat anyone else - you post what I consider to be bullshit, I'm going to call it that. If anyone ever begins posting like opinions of GW on the board - and while that used to be unlikely, with the GFYization of the gumbo, who the fuck knows? - I'm likely to do the same.

* That would most likely cause you to get a C&D from 12clucks.

I think China is the biggest threat to the U.S. today. Bigger than alQaida, definitely bigger than Saddam ever COULD have been - even if the WMD existed.

Are they more than a regional power right now? No. But I don't think we want a "sputnik" type suprise one day to make us realize that they have left that mode. However, "analysis"/statements like "the Chinese could not successfully seize Tawain, even without US support" has a kind of McArthuresqe quality about them - as in, McArthur to JCS, pre November 1, 1950. You don't need an abbacus to figure out that if they elected to take that Island back from the theives who stole it from the natives back in '49, they could do so. It would cost them dearly, but they could do it.

Hell, I posted an exerpt - either from from STRATFOR or from the Naval Institute's "Proceedings" magazine - a couple of months back describing the progress they are making toward making a possible defense of Tawain nearly impossible. Of much greater significance is those same steps could seriously hamper our ability to defend South Korea (greater significance in strategic significance, at least) or even Japan.

As much damage as the alleged secrets the Chinese did or didn't steal during the 90s may do in the long run, the far bigger problem (immediate and long-term) is Chinese acquisition of Soviet technology, particularly in the area of submarines - against which the whiz-bang toys and SpecOps stuff that Rummy & Co. seem to be inclined to are about as effective as pissing into a head wind.

Mike, you don't think China is a superpower??

They have 1.3 Billion people. GDP is almost $6 Trillion. Nuclear weapons. A huge piece of real estate and 375 Million men in their "available for military duty" pool.

That's sound like a superpower to me.

Why is US supporting or what are we defending in Taiwan ?

We have a ONE China policy, and officially Taiwan is called Chinease Taipei. We're against Independant Taiwan, but sell sofisticated weapons to Taiwan to defend themselves against China and probably have a nuclear umbrela over them.

Because aslong as China do not have control with Taiwan, then their focus is on that island. When/if they do get control of Taiwan, then they will swift their focus to other islands, countries or regions, which they also would like to control in one form or another.

Taiwan will slow China down, and make it possible to have more US presents in the region.

Did anyone notice the visit to Vietnam by a US Naval Vessel this week? Vietnam is a traditional enemy of the Chinese. I wonder why that is happening....

There is no way China can take Taiwan by force of arms. The strait is a great distance across and it would not be possible to maintain an invading force at such distance if the US intervenes or even if it does not.

As well the Chinese military budget is much less than even that of Japan. They are just not set up to actually pursue a war. And if they should do it and lose it would be the end of the party...Too much at risk.
