Blast from the past

Ok, so I'm going thru some stacks of CDs of old pics and content from back in the pre-web days.... And what do I find?

A whole stack of ANCIENT convention pics.

The year was 1994. BBSs were at their peak, the web was in it's infancy. The 3rd Annual One BBSCON (now known as ISPCON) was being held at the Inforum in Atlanta. 3000 or so people were in attendance including a bunch of folks from the adult BBS network known as ThrobNet.

And who was right in the middle of the BBS porn lords hosting the parties including a BBQ (and who knows what else!) at his house? Our very own GonZo! I had forgotten all about this until I found these pics.

I figure this CD is gonna have GonZo buying me dinner for at least a week. I'm just not sure whether he's going to be bribing me to suppress them or release them.

So GonZo -- is it true that you gave Laura of Laura's Lair a free saucerhead ride? Tell the truth because you know I just might have photographic evidence.

IIRC, I went to my first "IA2000" that year - though it may have been 1995. I swear I can't remember where it was (FL maybe), but I think it was the year Michael Pardis with ATN got beat up in the parking lot by one of the "friends" of a bigwig NY audiotext guy (whose name is also escaping me - damn I hate getting old!).

No pictures though. :P

I was cooking up gourmet texmex delights at the Coyote Cafe at the MGM Grand...I think it was in that year I got reprimanded for making a joke too loudly in Delta Burke's presence...she was going on about being seated in a VIP area so she wouldn't get bothered by "pesky fans" and I commented (way too loudly) "like anyone is going to get between Delta Burke and food..."

'94? I was just starting to homeschool my 5 & 3 year-olds and was hanging out on a very primative homeschooling-based BBS... a far cry from this industry I assure you. lol

I had just moved from MD to Syracuse, NY and if we're talking about this time of the year, I was LOVING the snow!
As for a job, I was working at Wal-Mart overnights in the shipping/receiving department and MAN was I in shape. Best exercise routine in the world... unloading tractor trailers and running up and down ladders every night for 8-10 hours.

A few from the collection....

The first one reminds me of the exact date. Most everyone stayed at the Marriott Marquis because that's where the hospitality suites were at night. The entire second floor with the meeting rooms was filled with suites all open at the same time. You could roam from suite to suite eating sponsors' food and drinking their liquor.

Anyone from Atlanta will recognize that atrium from hell at the Marquis in one of these shots. Notice the plants are missing from the planters. New Years Eve of that same year, party goers at the hotel totally trashed the place by launching plant bombs from every floor down into the lobby. It was a year or more before the Marquis put them back.

Our users used to love that feed / network. We actually had a pretty good network we started called Nastyhabits.

It was an excellent feed. I actually almost got control of it when Doug Kent gave it up to Joe Crosby. I could have echoed it and eventually did via QWK,FIDO,Wildcat and on the internet via a mailing list [remember when people used to beg to be subscribed?].

Throbnet actually merged with AfterDark right before the BBS scene died. HP is right. those pics were taken at the height of the market. I dont have to tell you about some good money being made back then.

Funny thing is there was no union or "leader" that some people have been whining about on here. We just knew how to rally.

Hellpuppy hasstarted the shit now. While I was out dragging in the old folks...I figured Id page Mike South to come in here and run off that nancy boy Luke Ford.

1994 ... working in Manhatten, living in Chelsea ... doing national advertising work on multi-million dollar systems that would eventually be surplanted by PCs, Photoshop and Quark Xpress ... trying to get a television show on the air ... playing with BBSs ... (had UseNet access and an email addy then too)
