me and my better half just had our 1st baby. she is now 7 weeks old and the absolute joy of my life

now heres my delema, we both have compact cars, and its just not cutting the mustard. we need an suv to tote all the baby stuff (stroller, walker baby bag +baby!) around. we both agree we like toyota 4 runners.

anyways, here is my problem. i hate making payments on anything. i would so much reather just flat out buy something. there is a limited 2001 4runner up the road from me, and im thinking about picking it up. only thing is, if i do that, there goes my vegas $

so, 4runner or vegas is what it looks like its boiling down 2. i know we need a bigger car, but vegas is the best show. great time, great place, great biz ops.

what would u do?

I personally don't go to Vegas and go to New Orleans to celebrate NY with MikeAI.

if you debate what's more important:
your family or or entertaintment-
it depends on the money you make on the net...

given the same choice in 1996,
I have chosen the net.

Brandon as a Mom I think the money is far better spent on a bigger vehicle. It'll relieve stress, make it easier to get out and about (you tend to turn into a hermit when it's a major hassle just to go somewhere), and generally a bigger vehicle will protect your little one better in an accident.

There will be another Internext in August, and in between there are tons of smaller shows like Pheonix and Cybernet Expo where you're likely to spend less money for far more "face time".

Besides, winter is coming. Not sure where you're at but I'd much rather handle the ice and snow with a baby in a 4runner than a roller skate.

Base line - there will *always* be shows to go to. But *every* day that you go without getting a vehicle more appropriate for the size of your family will be a day that you're getting frustrated, angry, and wishing you had something bigger. You can spend the money on 3 days of enjoyment, or the next 700 days of enjoyment.

Do a cost versus benefit

How much additional revenues will you generate from attending the Vegas show?

Will that pay for a new 4Runner?

Both of the vehicles my ex and I have are great for transporting our son and all the things we need to pack for trips (stroller, pack-n-play, etc ...) easily and mine is a 4 Wheel drive in case of inclement weather

and both are 4 door so that makes a world of difference

I can't comment on whether you'd be better off buying a vehicle or going to the show.

However, feeling somewhat old and cranky this moring, I find the "have a baby, need an SUV" routine I hear from folks (including my own daughter) these days kind of funny. Unless you are talking about two-seat sportscars, you can certainly get along just fine with a compact - although they are not nearly as cool or as convenient.

I guess I shouldn't talk ... I did trade in my Beetle for a Squareback when we had the third one ...

I will go back to being grumpy now.

4 doors make ALL the difference!
Even something like a Hyundai Accent with a nice trunk is great as long as it's 4 doors. If you buy a lot of groceries at once you'll have trouble finding the baby in the back on the way home, but you can get it all in there.

Just yesterday Hubby took our van to work and left me with the 240SX SE... it was HELL. I love that car, but not when I'm running errands with two kidlets in the back.
I was so happy to be back in the Van when we went over to my parents' house to give them the news about the baby.

PD I think the biggest difference between when we were kids and now is the laws on carseats.

Here in VA you have to keep a kid in a full carseat until they're 6. Those carseats take up a hell of a lot of room and don't fit well into the back of compact cars (most have kinda 'curved' back seats).

Plus with true baby seats now they've gotten bigger, they're made to go from the car to the stroller to the top of a shopping cart - it's just a major pain to try to go anywhere when you have a small car. Add in the stroller, diaper bag, etc and there's no room left to bring anything home. :(

Damn it when I was a kid there weren't special car seats, no seatbelt laws and we had metal dashboards

True, but the new car seats strap to the roof of the car very nicely. Best to face the baby to the rear of the vehicle, though ... bugs are harder to clean off than strained peas.

my car is a fast/fourious mitz eclipse 2 door and she has a mazda 2 door. you can see that these arent gonna fit

yes, car seats are amazing now. if i put it in the back of the eclipse then i cant move the passenger seat back. it holds the seat foward. and hang it up with the mazda. that thing makes my eclipse look like a limo

in all honesty, i dont think this show really is going to increase or decrease my profits in any godly amount. there are a ton of people that i would love to talk to face to face about my newest project, but thats nothing that cant be handled via icq. i was just using this as a break to get away from the day in day out, and to just enjoy vegas.

with all this in mind, i guess im going to go to that dealership now and see what kinda break hell cut me if i pay cash. guess i wont be seein you guys in vegas this year :(

I guess I'm old school. I've always prefered a "Griswald family truckster" such as this one..

My son was driven around in a 2 door Celica until he was 3 in a car seat. :) He's still alive!

Fucking National Lampoons Vacation!!!

:rokk:

Ed: Now, I owe it to myself to tell you, Mr. Griswold, that if you are thinking of taking the tribe cross country, this is your automobile. The Wagon Queen Family Truckster. You think you hate it now, but wait till you drive it.

and

Clark: I think you're all fucked in the head. We're ten hours from the fucking fun park and you want to bail out. Well I'll tell you something. This is no longer a vacation. It's a quest. It's a quest for fun. I'm gonna have fun and you're gonna have fun. We're all gonna have so much fucking fun we'll need plastic surgeory to remove our godamn smiles. You'll be whistling 'Zip-A-Dee Doo-Dah' out of you're assholes! I gotta be crazy! I'm on a pilgrimage to see a moose. Praise Marty Moose! Holy Shit!
