My dad is an amateur photographer - he mainly takes pics of the grandkids, his cats and a lot of desert scenery. He's actually pretty darn good.

Anyway - he was wanting to buy a backdrop for taking pics - like a blue or white screen, something that would be good for Photoshopping the pics. I was thinking about getting something like that for him for an early Christmas present this year.

My question is... any recommendations? He's using a digital camera (not a cheapo... a nice high-end Olympus) if that makes any difference (versus a 35mm). I guess I'm thinking of the background type thing that has a stand so he could set up a place to take pics for the holidays.

I know we have a lot of photographers in this biz so hopefully someone here will have some ideas.

Thanks in advance. :okthumb:

I don't really do any bluescreening myself.. but blue screens or green screens are the best. Like I say I haven't used them myself but you might find something on http://www.bhphotovideo.com/ :)

Kath...

Not sure if you would be able to find something out in the Palm Springs area,
but if you take a trip into LA you could check out Samy's Camera... or order online...

BHPhotos is a great company.

But you may be able to find something used for a good price on EBay or somewhere like that.

I'm sure we can supply him with lots of tips.

Blondes look good on a black back drop and it makes it easy to produce pics that are easily masked for tours and banners and such.

Just dont let a wench who has used dermablend to cover her ugly ass tattoos anywhere near you black backdrop....

lol - even though it sounds like an "ewwwww" Peaches, in a way I wish he was. My dad took early retirement a few years back to move us all out to CA from OH and will be stuck working for the rest of his life because of it. He's in a low-paying, high-stress job - it just makes me sick to see it. He won't let any of the kids help - even though we feel responsible because he moved for our betterment... *sigh*

So - maybe if dad got into the "content biz" it might not be such a bad idea. :awinky:

BTW... thanks everyone for the ideas. I've been checking into some of the suggestions.... nlphoto - I will be coming into the LA area next weekend for the Webmaster Access. I might do some shopping then too!

Much appreciated folks - this is going to make his holiday! :rokk:

Stands with roll paper backgrounds best way to go for good quality amateur pics for the kids, grandkids, pets, etc.

Cheap (about $25 per roll) to get all the colors you need.

One simple trick is at least 2 front lights with subject at least 4-5 feet from the backdrop and a backlight that highlights the hair and kicks the shadows off the background.
