View Full Version : Definition of a millionaire

Okay as the term is thrown around more frequently on this board lately than beads at Mardi Gras, what would your definition of a millionaire be?

To me, it's someone holding 1 million in liquid assets, or having the ability to write a check for 1 million. I don't agree with any of this earning it 10 years banter that's being thrown around, if you don't have it liquid, you're not a millionaire, everyone theoretically "should" earn 1 million + in their lifetime given inflation, etc

Carrie

I never thought of it as being purely liquid, as most people take into account houses, cars, stocks etc when they're saying that some is "worth millions".
But I can see your point - it's certainly easier to identify someone as a millionaire when they could write a check for one million and have that much sitting in a spendable account.

If you can literally write a check today for $1million, you may not have your monies properly invested. But if you claim to be a millionaire, you best be able to write a check for $1million within a few days without selling the house and cars!

Toolz, bring your $ to Vegas, I will let you know if you are a millionaire.

Brad,

I make no claims to the aforementioned :) and yeah sorry shouldn't have the million in a checking account that's insane but easily liquidated.

I tend to agree with Brad. I don't think it needs to be completely liquid, but should exclude your house and car. So, if you needed a million quick, you could get your hands on it without losing everything.

girlgeek=not a millionaire

Today's topic - "When you call someone a liar because they quote your own words back to you, and you're too stupid to remember you lied in the first place, it's polite to apologize or be confirmed as the worm that you are."

"And behold, a pale horse. And his name that sat on it was DJ. And hell followed with him.."

Hire a financial advisor. I am sure you have some rich friends, find someone that comes well recommended. There are 50 places your $ could be, rather than a checking account gaining less than 1% interest. I have a lot of my money in mutual funds. Up quite a bit this year, of course the entire market is up. Thankfully none of the funds I am in are involved in the big current SEC investigation.

put them in staggered CD's and collect interest...

100% secure, provides INCOME regardless of buisness conditions and quite liquid..

You need to start doing your IRAs - $8,000 tax deductible this year
You can put another $2,000 in a Roth.

I would recommend Alliance-Bernstein - just make sure you have a good investment counselor. I am sure there are many other good ones. I also have some Franklin. Bonds can also be a steady investment.

These things are a must - you will be glad you did!!

The best investment I have ever seen is Real Estate. Buying the right property, in the right place, at the right time - But sometimes it is not quickly liquid. But, with the new lline of credit loans at 4% - you can alwys get money pretty quickly, until you can liquidate.

But, most of all - deversify.
