This question has been debated to death. I think there is a consensus. "Amateur" has become a generic term for personality based websites.
You can park your benz right behind my e-type. I left a little room so don't scratch my paint.

I agree it has been discussed to death, but I will kick the corpse around a bit. :-)
I see it as being applied to personality based websites as well as larger sites who feature unknown models.
Some folks are using the terms home-made, independent, porn with personality, etc... to differentiate themselves from the sites that have bought Amateur content.
For marketing purposes I can see how labels are useful.

I think now the term 'amateur' simply means a girl next door type of girl with her own site, or the like. Or simply, regular old folks fucking, or whatever. The average joe banging his wife type of porn.
The most simple comparison would be the old VCA type porn vs the new 'POV' style stuff. Jim HOlidays Car Wash Angels is surely not filled with 'amateurs', those are PornSTARS, nothing amateur about it, these girls are paid by scene and try to do multiple scenes a week and it's their job.
Whereas an 'amateur' girl with her own site, is simply showing off herself, although it may now be her 'profession' simply because there is money in it, there are clearly some 'amateurs' who don't really make much money on it, and just like to show their stuff.
A prime example of it, would be Mardi gras type flashing pics, but then again, the ringers in those now have become paid pornstars as well.
Its all the same shit I guess.
But to compare Stacy Valentine to an amateur girl with her own site highlights the differmces between the two, although they do the same thing.

Amateur in just a word, it has a seperate meaning that should be listed in Dictionary.com It refers to sites, or content of girls that are not part of the traditional porn ( video/magazine) scene.

If it is based on one "personality"
What about my own site:
http://www.ilynx.com (Which has won 2 awards for "Best Free Amateur Site" btw (cough);-)))
or thevoyeurweb?
Aren't they amateur?

Like many other things in this industry, "amateur" is just a marketing word that is used to attract surfers to a certain type of site. It shouldn't be a label used to tag the girls who participate. Whether they do it for the pure exhibistionist kick or are all about the money is irrelevant.
The broadest definition would be a site based around real women, the girl next door. I'm not talking about whether they're paid models or running a site out of their basement personally, but rather that they are not professional models with that playboy plastic look. They look like someone you might meet at the supermarket.
I think most avid amateur site surfers are looking for single girl sites. And there's money to be made and business to be done whether the featured girl is an active participant in the site or not. But I've done it both ways and believe me the surfers can tell when the girl is really involved. It's tough to fake out the guys who are looking for that for very long.

While it's easy to identify who isn't an amateur (Aria, Asia, Jenna etc) - it's not so easy to identify who *is*.
Here's an example - Kayla of Kaylacam. Been running her own "amateur" site for quite a while. But just recently she got a small part in an actual professional adult film, with an opening scene and her name in the credits.
Is she now no longer an "amateur", but more of a small-time "pornstar"?

The lines are definitely blurring.
If Kayla is crossing the border going one way, it could be argued that Asia is crossing it coming the other way. Her site has been around forever and has many of the same attributes of any amateur site that is run by the featured girl. Although she's clearly a professional and a bonafide pornstar, her users have the same behavior patterns and loyalty as some of the best amateur sites.
I think the key is she gives them a really good taste of her real life, thus they know her as a person and not just a pornstar.

Sounds to me like an "am" who became "pro-am".
Not sure how much this term has been used lately. Content providers used that term a lot long ago. And while it might sound like a bit of a paradox, I think it's actually a good "between" name for a category.
