By the title, I thought you'd gotten a zit.

Could you clue us non-RC folks into what the heck it is and how big a something it works with?

It's a real life jet engine!

28 lbs of thrust computer controlled. It's home will be a 40 pound F-15 jet eventually. :D

Holy crap. :o Apparently they'll give those things to ANYONE!

LMK when you get everything in operation - I have a feeling I'm going to need to duck up here in the GA mountains. :nyanya:

Next question, how much does it cost to build/fly one of these things?

All that thing needs is RC missiles for taking out slower RC aircraft that are in the way.

That's a big huge variable.

If your really good with plans, wood and fiberglass, the plane can cost as little as the materials, under 200 bucks.

Kits can run from 400-3500 bucks.

Then there's radio systems that run from 150 to 1200 bucks depending on all the channels you need.

Turbine engines can be built from kits for about 750, and all out full auto start with remote ready to run with fuel pumps and everything can be as high as 4,000 bucks.

Ive seen some guys with 20k invested in some planes.

What are the laws dealing with these planes? I would imagine you could pack some c4 onto that plane and take out a world leader.

First to fly R/C planes you need to be a member of AMA. That is a 2 million dollar insurance agaisnt personal or property damage.

To fly turbines you need to get a waiver from them.
To get the waiver you have to take ground school on the engine operation from a certified rep.
After they sign off, you need to demonstrate flying abilities to 2 seperate reps that sign you off. You have to do a bunch of maneuvers on a plane that can reach at least 150mph.

Then of course you need all the fire supression equiptment, then your good to go.

So far only about 500 people are r/c turbine certified in the U.S.

Having you been flying for a long time?

Last summer we got into Nitro cars, stupidly I bought the biggest fastest one to start which turned into the biggest mangled piece of metal and plastic you've ever seen. Apparently when they ask if you have experience you should be honest. Now I've got 4 cars in various states of disrepair just waiting for the winter repair season. Once they started running high costs to repair than my REAL off-road vehicle I started to lose interest.

Good luck with the jet, I'm sure you can rig up a servo to drop things from the bottom of it with, so practice that in your stability flying :)

Well, judging by your numbers it would take at least 10K for me to build one... more likely 20K as I'd fuck the first one up. And that's not counting the amount of money I wouldn't make as I totally obsessed over the project for months!

I guess I'd better stay away from this one.

I started flying R/C planes in 91'.

I got into the jets around 93, then eventually was writing reviews for R/C Report magazine for a few years. I burned out around 96 when I started playing with websites.

Then the twins came. I just started back into it last April. Even found some of my old jets in a friends attic that he had kept around.

always wanted to get a R/C jet.

I envy you!!!

Be sure to post video of it after its complete and flying.

I have an RC boat and car sitting in my garage. I used to race rc cars when I was a kid, but got sick of fixing them! In college got back into rc street cars again. Everyone in the fraternity made fun of me when I was building it, then after they saw it run, they all wanted one.

Good idea :) Think these turbines would work in a car? I'm running a .21 and it already goes faster than I can control but you know what they say about HP, you can never have enough :)

Shok
11-05-2003, 01:03 PM
It would have to be a big car....the smallest turbine puts out 7lbs of static thrust, on a 12 lbs. plane that equals about 190mph
