I can't get my formmail.pl configured properly to email me the info filled in from forms on my site.

I'd like to barter with an experienced webmaster to tweak this and get it running, plus do other very occasional tasks that won't take much time (just knowledge/experience).

In return I will host your site for free, a full-service hosting account with plenty of space and bandwidth, all the trimmings.

My site is here: http://cyberhostserver.com

If interested and able, please email me at james@jhussher.com

Ok, let me get this straight, you cant get a simple formmail script running, but yet you want someone to let you host their sites as payment for services?

This is on the house... Typically for simple canned scripts, newbies make one of two mistakes:

1) When you uploaded it to the server, you failed to select "ascii" mode for your FTP transfer.

2) You haven't set your permissions correctly. Do a "chmod 755" on the script if you haven't already.

I knew someone would bring up that point sooner or later, and it's a legitimate remark. Hosting sites is system engineer work, and I'm MCSE . Scripts are programming work, and if you know a lot of professional IT people, you'll know that the twain rarely meet. I've always been more hardware and systems oriented and hated taking programming classes in college.

Running a host and running its website are 2 different skill sets. I don't solely possess all of the skills to do either all by myself, but the Air Force taught me that having good people is a key to success of an operation.

On top of which, I am also very busy with the design and maintenance of my adult sites, TGP'ing, SEO, a big PPC project, and publishing 3 newsletters.

So I made a decision to ask for some help from someone who could handle the matter in a few minutes rather than my devoting hours to it and having to go up a learning curve in the process.

I do have the chmod set correctly, but you may have something with the ascii FTP. I think I did binary. But right now I have located a programmer who is fixing it up, so I will make sure to ascii FTP it tomorrow.

Thank you for your comment and advice.

James

I'll agree with you that in the world of Microsoft servers, the admins need not be programmers.

However, in the world of Unix based servers sys admins are usually expected to be fluent in shell scripting and Perl at the minimum. Although SA's need not be true developers, basic scripting skills are necessary for survival. You cant clean up other people's messes without 'em! :awinky:

Good luck!

ASCII mode FTP transfers are generally bad news, no matter what. Sure in this case, it could be safe. But maybe there are some high ascii chars in there.

Even if you are transfering a typed out text file, using binary transfer does not hurt it at all.

How many people have been messed up from doing a default "get" from a windows FTP client (which uses ascii mode by default) on a .mpg or something? haha.

Binary mode will never corrupt data, no matter what it is. ASCII transfer will.

How can I put this diplomatically and politely?

Hmmm....

You dont know what the fuck you're talking about.

Sorry, just no other way to slice it. Let me see if I can explain this in layman's terms.

If you're on a Microsoft based OS as most of us are, it terminates the end of lines with a cr/lf. Unix, like most other operating systems, does not need both.

So what happens is when you transfer a script in binary mode from Windows to Unix is you end up with an extra character at the end of every line. It'll show up as "^M".....this confuses the shit out of an interpreter such as Perl and will typically end up coughing up a HTTP 500 Internal Server Error everytime you try to run the script.

If you transfer in ASCII mode, that extra carriage return will get stripped off and your scripts will run fine.

Seems to be working now since I just got spammed by him. james@jhussher.com . Yes I know form mail isn't sending spam but just curious how this guy shows up today and 5 minutes later I'm getting spam from him.

Ulfie, ditto.

I doubt he'd be stupid enough to spam with his own name. More than likely what happened is his plea for help for formmail basically advertised the fact that he's installing it to spammers. So they're spoofing the shit out of it and using his server to send out their mailers because he didn't know how to secure it.

I dont give that lesson for free....

Sure you dont wanna let him host your sites?
