View Full Version : For those who say Shizzle and such

I long for the new era when English, language and expression will again be a thing of beauty, refinement and grace

When idea, sentiments and concepts will be expressed with passion, elegance and charm

Not the vulgar guttural styling that have been influenced by screw top 40's

Why is verbal expression taking the form of the lowest common dominator

When did a lack of enunciation become something to emulate

When verbiage is lost and the vernacular of the peasantry becomes the standard you have lost a most meaningful and powerful form of expression and communication

Can you picture Mozart/Einstein/Hemingway/Jefferson saying Shizzle de dizzle of my fizzle - these type of expressions lack refinement and by no means engage the sense to further heights

Why

Your right Vick, and I think your also a little wrong. Our language evolves as I am sure your keenly aware. And although I think the shizzle phase will pass, as many others have, I do think that our shared language will never be the same. Some terms will stick while others (Thank gawd) will pass into the oblivion so well deserved for such phrases. I cannot imagine ever there being an instance where I could, in all seriousness, address someone as 'Thee' or yours as 'Thine'.
I personally feel a well versed vocabular is a sign of self respect and a desire to be understood. Sometimes the big words are the ones that express what you want the most clearly, even if your audience does have to look it up. I have a certain distaste for the current slang, and use 'bling bling' as a joke...........Always Yo.
But I think the days of what could truely be considered 'eloquent' speech is long gone. I do see some beauty in the expression of youth by youths.

Hey now I don't even listen to top 40.

I learned it on the internet. :)

(and I don't really use that word offline, it sounds ridiculous)

spazlabz - you make good points - thank you

with regard to youth - it's wasted on the young (thanks George Bernard Shaw)

I can suggest addressing people in an eloquent fashion (not thee and thou but a more refined manner of speaking) and view reaction. From my limited experience it is very favorable and commands respect from interesting minds worth engaging

and this is why I post to Oprano - interesting enlightened minds that can discourse intelligently on a variety of subjects and issues

What about the word Bizzle?

only after the second fifth of Dewar's and only if it is slurred so that's someone's best guess is it was the sound made during/from projectile vomiting

My personal hatred ,used in convo not on boards , is for the pronounciation of "ask" as "Ax"

It seems this generation celebrates ignorance.

(Oh shit , I am getting old!)

Vick.... Word! :D

But I agree... fashion slang is sometimes fun for awhile, though.
Language evolves just like everything else.

I react to being axed a question the same as if long fingernails get dragged across a chalk board.

I also get nearly homicidal at people who talk as though every sentence, including statements, is a question.

But then, I am old. I have embraced my oldness.

I have always been intrigued by the mass usage of 'slang' volcabulary in business conduct on the web....

I was raised on a different vocabulary, in a different business environment, where such usage would be the surest thing to a quick escort out the rear door...

I've attributed it to my old age, and a 'new generation'.. but wonder, how many of this generation, who think usage of this type of 'slang' even incorporated into serious business discussions, will fare, should their net adventures fade away....

It's not just the net.. I see the same thing in my son and his friends... its scary..... or it's my 'business breeding' in corp america showing thru.... not sure which....

In any event, one of the things I've most enjoyed about reading Vick's posts are his obvious command of the language, and his wit in it's usage....

Its the whole "izzle" thing.

for sure = fo' shizzle

I will admit the izzle thing has gone way too far though. I suppose I am not ghetto enough to list all the variations though, too bizzle. (too bad)

I personally like the fact that most US-based webmasters type worse english than people that don't speak english as their native language. That makes me feel all warm inside. :salute:

A couple of years ago, the 'izzle and "bling-bling" thing was funny, now it's tiresome. It's especially bad when middle-aged white boys are trying to be "playas" and actually talking like that!

I have certain criteria I use when I select programs to use on our sites. One of them is, if the word "bling" is used anywhere in their sales pitch, I stay away! I just figure they are trying to sell to the 15 year old TGP posters, and not to anyone who takes the business seriously.

Yeah, it's sad that "ebonics" and basically poor grammar and pronunciation have become cool. Hip hop has been hot for a few years, and so our youth tries to imitate it to be cool. By age 30 most will figure out that when you wear your pants down around your thighs with your drawers showing and talking like you have zero education just makes you look stupid.

I'm sure some of us have some 80's wardrobe and haircuts that we can look back and wonder what the fuck we were thinking.... And there's probably some of us on here who can understand "valley girl" speak and remember it.

Shizzle and a lot of those type words have their origins actually back in the 20's with carny speak from the carnivals. They would distort their language in a manner in which the marks couldn't understand what they were saying when talking to each other. Professional wrestlers adapted it for many of the same reasons, many of the really old school guys still use it to call their match so even if you hear it you probably cant understand what they're saying.

I think hip hop adapted it to be able to talk about stuff on the radio that the FCC wouldn't appreciate but isn't "cool" enough to figure out. "The Shit" becomes "The Shiznit" in carny and further evolves to "The Shizzle".

HP - much thanks. I didn't know the izzleism's were a derivate of carny speak

As I've admitted previously I was am 80's glam fag ...... but
The differences I see are previous times didn't degenerate the spoke word but flavored it so to speak.

Also the 80's didn't glorify obvious harsh criminal elements, at worst (and at times best) we exemplified heroism

This isn't the first time that language will be twisted and certainly won't be the last - especially by artists. You can't even attribute the rappers with the honor of skipping past FCC reps - I think that Bob Dylan probably wasn't even the first but he's the furthest back that I can think of.

I think we've reached a new level in depravity though, when a California school board has decided to offer ebonics as a second language.

It's, like, grody to the max, for sure! :awinky:

That article pretty much epitomizes what I think about most "netspeak" and people who can't (or refuse) to type out full words. I laughed so hard when I read it I almost hurt myself. Do check that site out.. her article on Porn is especially enlightening.

the boys just kept on repeating LOL LOL LOL while laughing

An excellent explanation for the use of slang comes, oddly enough, from South Park.... where Chef commented that white people keep using "black" words, and they have to keep using new words until the point where the have to make up totally new words just to stay ahead of the white people.

I am SO glad that my kids didn't pick up on all the -izzle stuff... hell, they even totally missed the whole rap/hip-hop thing *knocks on wood*... the worst I've had to contend with is a bunch of bubblegum top-40 kinda stuff from my daughter, but thank goodness our son is a die-hard Ozzy/Metallica fan. :rokk:

... oh and my kids also know not to spell out L-O-L. I must be doing SOMETHING right after all! ;)
