Congress Encourages War on Pornography
by Keith Peters, Washington, D.C., correspondent

There's no shortage of opportunities to prosecute pornographers -- but will a House resolution increase enthusiasm in the attorney general's office?

This is Pornography Awareness Week, and the U.S. House of Representatives has pitched in with a measure encouraging vigorous prosecution of obscenity laws.

H. Con. Res. 298, authored by Rep. John Sullivan, R-Okla., urges Attorney General John Ashcroft to aggressively prosecute obscenity. It notes that the U.S. Supreme Court not only has upheld the rights of legislatures to pass obscenity laws, but also has recognized that government has a legitimate interest in banning obscene material.

But porn kingpins have not been prosecuted for more than 10 years, according to Dan Panetti, a spokesman for the National Coalition for the Protection of Children and Families.

"(Attention) really just needs to be brought back to the fact that a lot of the pornography out there is really obscenity," Panetti said. "It can be prosecuted. It can be found illegal. It just needs to be done. The laws are there. They're just not being enforced."

Panetti added that action by the Justice Department is essential.

"Unless we stand up and say 'Enough is enough' and 'There are standards that we have to live by,' this (explosion of pornography) is what we (can expect)," he said. "For the first time in 10 years we're standing up and saying . . . that there are standards."

Robert Peters, president of Morality in Media, said it is possible to win the war on pornography.

"My definite goal," Peters said, "is to reverse the floodtide of hardcore pornography in the United States of America, and to push it back out of the mainstream of culture back into the gutter where it belongs."

Gee, kinda like those gun laws you assholes keep passing. How about cracking down on those first? Last I knew, having sex wasn't killing anyone, but criminals with illegal guns were...

These Morality in Media guys.... *shakes head*

Sincerely though... as funny as it sounds, these guys are no joke. The old sayings of "keep your friends close & your enemies closer" and "know thine enemy" are their mantra...

Take a look through their site... they've done their homework. As whacked out as they are, they know a hell of a lot more about "us" than "we" know about them. If knowledge is power, these guys could be more challenging than we think.

Fortunately though - they are trying to take on everything "bad" all at once and are not concentrating enough efforts on one point at a time... if they did that, we'd be in trouble. Lucky for us they are whacked enough to think they can abolish it all with one blow.
