Hmm, seems like reasonable use to me.

'At the time, the Blue Blazes band was playing the composition by Franz Joseph Haydn that eventually became known as ”Deutschland Uber Alles.” Grissom said it was part of a show entitled “Visions of World War Two,” in which the flags and music were intended to represent the warring nations.'

If it were a kid wearing a nazi shirt he would be kicked out of school. instead using "art" as the pretense the school supported it.

What's the whole story? Did the school intend to make a pro-Nazi statement or was it just one of many flags of the nations involved in WW II?

I'm sure many high school history textbooks have pictures of Nazi flags in there. Should we ban them?

Now, Grisson said the show will only include the American flag. “The kids and myself, we caused a reaction, and we certainly didn’t mean to,” he told the Morning News. “We’ll use it as a learning situation.”

um, so we were the only ones involved in WWII now? I guess history will just continue to be sanitized and made more PC....it will be interesteing to see what my grandchildren will get as far as hostory lessons....

I agree maybe there was poor timing or poor communication, but if the show was to represent WWII why wasn't it allowed to include the flag of one of our greatest foes? Maybe we should change the repsentation of the Nazi flag to one with a big yellow smiley face on it? Awwww, the smiley face will make the children smile and think happy thoughts.....so adorable

why not have a high school parade with kids dressed up as KKK members carrying burning crosses and chanting "all niggers must die". nothing wrong with that... as you said, "you can't run away from history" Following "kill a nigger" week at the local Junior High, they can move right into "shoot an indian day" and "bitch get in there and cook me some grub and my clothes better be clean" day.

there has to be boundaries somewhere. God forbid, we actually let the system work and the people decide where they are. getting booed, screamed at and having stuff thrown at them, by an angry audience may be a first clue as to the innapropriateness of what happened. since we were not there, i think i would give that little bit of evidence a little more weight than others seem to.

if you equate "mob rule" to democracy and letting people decide WITHIN the law what they will and will not tolerate as well as what they do and do not fnd offensive... then i guess... yes.

i was saying that i was not there and that the reaction of the crowd was a good indication that there is more to this story and the visuals, than the mere text of an article conveys.

there is a big difference in proving "the crowd can possibly be wrong" and me saying "the majority of people, as a general rule, are usually more correct than not"

I dont doubt that you can point out some obscure case in Northern Siberia to show where a crowd acted/reacted incorrectly.

all i said was that i would suggest the reaction of the people there, suggests there is more to this story. nothing more. i did not mean to offend any Nazis either.

I dont know that its fair to say that the "the overwhelming majority" of Germans or Russians supported Stalin or Hitler. I once had a cleaning lady that loved and defended Stalin, but i think we both know that Khrushchev's first order of business were to enact policies to distance the Communist Party from the legacy of Stalin.

People in general, supported what they believed in, based on the information they had or were given.

how does that equate to the good folk of Paris Texas and their apparent dissaproval of a parade of high school kids flying a Nazi flag on a Jewish holiday? Are they being brainwashed by the Nazi propaganda machine? are they being forced to read "Pravda" as their only new source about the world and life? or can the be possibly expected to make a more educated and balanced decision than the average 1938 Soviet Citizen could comment on farmers in the Ukraine?

Just out of curiosity, are you accusing the people of Paris Texas of plotting to invade and annex Mexico? i dont follow the connection between Stalin and a high school function.

So if a teacher wants to display the flags of World War II, should they exclude the Nazi flag? *gasp*

Why not the Japanese flag? Maybe in Germany they shouldn't show the US flag in their version?

Maybe the teacher should only have "Visions of World War II" on certain days of the year. Days that won't be offensive to anyone.

Now they're only showing the American flag. Reminds me of that South Park episode where they get rid of everything associated with Christmas.

Why not make the whole world blind?

Free speech is a bitch, isn't it? Seems to me it worked in this case.

There was a KKK rally here a few years ago and 5000 people showed up to shout them down. In my mind that's stupid. Just gave them more media coverage. If 10 people showed up it wouldn't have been as big a deal as it was. Probably helped the KKK more than it hurt them. Probably rallied the nutjobs more than anything. The KKK has free speech rights but I also have the freedom not to listen to them. Pretty simple actually.

Ummm ... no offense, Colin, but that's bullshit.

There is a significant difference between a teacher showing the flags of the powers that fought in WWII in a classroom and a halftime display involving a Nazi flag on the football field - particularly on a Jewish holiday.

It's not like they were just showing a Nazi flag. Context.

"Grissom said it was part of a show entitled “Visions of World War Two,” in which the flags and music were intended to represent the warring nations."

I see a plural there ... flags.

---------

From: http://www.woai.com/news/local/story.aspx?...7F-2D681F7D52A2 (http://www.woai.com/news/local/story.aspx?content_id=4AAEC751-E8F0-4DB7-8E7F-2D681F7D52A2)

"The show included the flags of other nations fighting in World War II, such as France, Britain, the United States and Japan. The flags were waved twice as a musical selection from each country was played."

---------

http://www.zwire.com/site/news.cfm?BRD=107...7&PAG=461&rfi=9 (http://www.zwire.com/site/news.cfm?BRD=1078&dept_id=151021&newsid=10249437&PAG=461&rfi=9)

The show also includes the flags and music of France, Britain, Japan and the United States. The flags were raised in intervals that corresponded with the music of the nations. An announcement over loudspeakers before the performance explained the school was trying to do a "historical, accurate depiction of the event."

------------

"Now, Grisson said the show will only include the American flag. "

:salute:

Now, I just have a public school education, but it seems to me that the Nazi flag may carry a bit more baggage than the Japanese or Italian flgs might. To my knowledge there aren't any currently active hate groups who proudly display the "Rising Sun" or Italian flags as a symbol of their views.

It was an absolutely STUPID selection for use at the halftime show of a high school football game.

I would agree the timing could have been more politically correct but at the end of the day, whats done is done.

To ignore significant parts of history is incomprehensible to me.

My cousin and her husband are artists. He paints some pictures that I find pretty offensive but he does it to get a reaction out of people. (He hates Republicans so we have some interesting discussions) I don't see much difference between that and showing a nazi flag especially when it's for artistic reasons. I guess we should just ban everything that anyone might find remotely offensive. Yeah, that's the ticket.

PornDoggy,
I have a question for you.....

should a daughter breast feed her father?

YES or NO and what the reaction of the crowd should be?

I am serious as a heart attack and expect your honest answer

i agree. thats why the schools should sponsor a "Nazi SS Death Squad" week at the local junior high to remind the kids about the attrocities comitted during WWII. they could simulate rounding their friends up, sorting them by age, sex and health and then sending them off to either a work camp or a gas chamber. the meaner kids would be allowed to just pretend to shoot and rape people for fun.

... or maybe we could just leave it all to history classes, books and documentaries?

I don't know anything about daughters nursing their fathers ... but I do recall the closing chapter of the Grapes of Wrath. If you want to discuss art, that's fine - but we're not talking about art. We're talking about the halftime show at a fucking high school football game.

Perhaps some of you went to different kinds of schools than me, but the most offesnive thing I ever saw at a high school football halftime show was the marching band attempting to play pieces from "Tommy." It's not what I consider an educational venue - so all this crap about not teaching about the Nazis seems more than a bit hysterical to me.

my point is not "its a flag and its a terrible thing"

my point is that "its a part of history, so it's ok" is a weak argument as well. why is it relevent that its a part of history? Turks invading neighboring countries, burning villages, raping and throwing babies in the air to try to stab them in mid-flight is a part of history too. so what? are we going to not be upset at a "spear a baby" at the half time show?

my point is that there are clearly boundaries to acceptable and unnaceptable displays and there are cleary appropriate and innapropriate times and places.

who decides those boundaries? you? me? Serge?

people do. people decide what is acceptable and unnaceptable. people decided right there on the spot that they did not like it. They had better information to make that decision than any of us do here. unlike Serge, who continually makes irrelevent referrences to Stalin as if there are some parallels between October 1917 in Russia and The Great Paris Texas High School Football Game of 03'... they made an educated decision.

I would go further to say that the boundaries for acceptable behavior of Sykkboy, updating a porn site while listening to megadeth may in fact be a little different than the boundaries of a family of 6 at a school function.

I am not saying anyone is right or wrong. i am saying that the argument itself that "its a part of history...blah blah blah" is just as weak and silly as any other argument.

Serge is more clever than i am because he just declares people to be wrong and thats the end of it. sucks i did not think of that first.

I still don't see how display of a flag during a half time show pisses so many people off...we're talking about context. It wan't like a bunch of neo-Nazis were out seig heiling the flag and singing "These Boots Were Made For Stomping", it was part of a display of warring nations of WWII. Now, if there was a man dressed as Hitler, that may have been poor taste.

Actually, the teacher who put this together should be fired for trying to something educational during a football field, because last thing we want associated with football is education....what was he thinking?

I live in rural Illinois, and it's the same thing here. I know that's it's close to that in some of the St. Louis suburbs too. I've heard the H.S. football in Texas is equal to basketball in Indiana - it's not a relgion, but close.

If the local community felt it was in bad taste, then the organizers of the event would suffer their due fate. Their reputation would be subject to review and there would be consequences.

Certainly, you cannot expect to apply the first amendment equally and not have people offended.

Why does there have to be consequences beyond that?

It seems to me that to expect / request consequences beyond this is to merely express favoritism among ideological agendas.

er... thats been my point exactly. we are forming opinions based on assumptions of a writers explaination of an event.

those who were there, reacted to what they saw.

Actually, the teacher who put this together should be fired for trying to something educational during a football field, because last thing we want associated with football is education

again, you are making the same argument. "its a part of history" - "its education" etc etc. I can also show an aborted fetus to a group of 8 year olds and claim its "education" - however, some would argue the appropriateness of that act based on a variety of considerations.

its fine to say "i dont see anything wrong with that" - I might agree. But to defend that argument simply by saying that "its just a part of history" etc etc, is no stronger than the arguments of those saying its innapropriate for their own reasons.

how are attrocities being forgotten?

even schools as pathetic as those in the American public education system teach about world history, wars, world war 1 and 2 and how many people died etc.

i did not know Nazis were being forgotten to the point that there was a need to remind families at half time of a high school football game about 10,000,000 plus executions and victems of attrocities. i am sure many there would have preferred the antics of the school mascot and marching band, which is probably more appropriate than your argument for a statement about mass executions and more 60-70 million lost lives.

I think your Soviet schooling is taking over. although we all appreciated the fact that the Soviet Union had a vast arsenal of tanks and nuclear missiles - as Americans just never felt that showing off endless columns of weaponry while joining huge mobs of people drunk on vodka in belting out patriotic songs to the Red Army Choir about how Moscow is the capital of the world and the West will be destroyed forever, was an appropriate way to celebrate Librarians Day or any other innane event.

but opinions do/did vary.
