I think he is perhaps , undeservedly well remembered , because he didn't really have enough time as President to really fuck up.

;-))))

Only thing of note he ever did was get shot in the head. Oh yea and fucked Marilyn.

Yeah, he did not have time to really do much....

He is generally overrated ...

Well, he had nearly 3 years of his 4 in office but yeah, imagine if he had finished his term.

Invaded Cuba (thanks for the planning, Ike), created the Peace Corps, massively increased defense spending and number of armed forces personnel, started building ICBMs like crazy, sent 40,000 troops to Europe, faced down Khrushchev in the Cuban Missile Crisis and sent tens of thousands of troops to Viet Nam.

Sort of like Bush but even more belligerent and didn't use enough force in Bay of Pigs but I like him anyway for trying ;-)

Damn ... if you admire Kennedy for trying at the Bay of Pigs you must think the Gallipoli Campaign was Churchill's finest hour.

He did more good than harm, but the legend is just that - a wisp of smoke from Camelot.

Nice prose.

Compared to whom though? People often criticize presidents without comparing them to other presidents. Who do you think were the best presidents post-World War II?

Thanks, although I thought you'd comment on the "finest hour." :D

Truman, hands down, for the Marshall Plan. Honorable mention for Johnson (domestic policies, particularly civil rights) and Nixon (environment and China).

That was good too. I started this thread with you in mind BTW and definitely the JFK/Bush belligerency comment was for your eyes. lol. ;-)

Big fan of Truman and he shaped the post World War II presidency more than anyone. One of my favorites. All hands down here.

Nixon disgraced the office but he certainly had some fine moments. (with apologies to Vick ;-) )

Johnson created the social policies that have made this country much greater and we should all thank him for that. Too bad about Viet Nam.

I really liked Kennedy too.

And Reagan.

My favorite 20th century presidents then:

1. Roosevelt
2. Truman
3. JFK
4. Reagan

I like Ike too. And After that Wilson and Teddy.

Before that

1. Madison
2. Jefferson
3. Lincoln
