I love travelling, and it seems there are a few around Oprano who do as well. My own travelling has been somewhat restricted to Europe, I only really started travelling in the US and Caribbean when I started in this business.

I guess my most favourite destinations would be Holland and Germany.
I read that Serge's fave is Italy. I've been there as well. It's nice.

I made a trip to Rome in 1992, but I lived in the south of Germany for many years and I could drive through Switzerland (amazing drive with great views) and into Italy in about 6 hours. So I've been in the north a lot. We would stay in Como overnight once in awhile.

If you have the chance, make a trip to Interlaken in Switzerland. Each time I go there I never want to leave. http://www.interlaken.ch/

A suggestion for you Serge that I am sure you and LL will enjoy...

Base yourself out of a small town somewhere south of Strasbourg (German side is better.... no gypsies). I know you like wine, and both the German and Alsacian wines in this area are very good. Then, rent a nice big Audi or something and drive south to the ski resort village of Saas-Fe. You'll end up driving your car onto a train and the train will take you through the mountains. It's quite an experience.

No matter what time of year you go, you can go skiing. We did this in the summer because we always wanted to experience skiing in the summertime on the glacier.

This was one of my more memorable trips. I'm hoping to do it again sometime.

EC - I think (therefor I am) you'll find MANY posting at Oprano LOVE to travel

My travels have been mainly the continental US and will freely admit I am stuck on a few destinations such as

New Orleans (once this year) - my favorite city in the world, totally dedicated to hedonism. Home to incredible dining, shopping and 24 hour drinking. The rich, vibrant history of the city and surrounding areas is more than enough to keep a mind stimulated. The architecture is breath taking and an eclectic mix of styles and influences. The people of New Orleans are about as diverse a group as you will find anywhere. I'm only scratching the surface of reason to travel to New Orleans

Disney World (once this year in February and going again in December) - Ok so I am a Disney Freak, but there is no place like it in the world. To be a kid again (not that I ever stopped), to see the magic and then see the magic in my son's eyes. The one place all your cares and worries go away

Manhattan (4 times this year) - the capital of the world. Yes it can be dirty, nasty and foul but no other place can be so ALIVE as Manhattan. Always something to see, do and experience. Broadway, dining, shopping all a few minutes away in a sometimes death defying cab ride plus if you can't find it in Manhattan I don't know where you'll find it. It does amaze me how many families live in the city and goes to show the human condition will adapt

Might be going to Detroit in a few weeks to attend my Aunt and Uncle's 50th wedding anniversary

Would love to stay in Italy, visit the UK (in the summer), experience Japan (if nothing else for the sheer cultural differences) and see Hawaii

City I don't really enjoy - Las Vegas. I don't game much and other than seeing Cirque shows there's not a whole lot for me there. There are beautiful hotels and great entertainment and dining there but ... ennn

I love to travel, but can't find as much time and money as I'd like to be able to do much of it. I used to do a lot of day trips up and down the east coast for business, but because I was a single mother, I did what I could to be back at night so I didn't really get to see a lot of places I've been to, lol!

My son has actually traveled more than I have thanks to my generous brother. :okthumb:

Serge, if you were serious about the nazi era stuff, I suggest a visit to Dachau which is just outside of Munich. It is indeed a very sobering experience. I visited it simply because we were driving through Munich on our way back from a ski trip in Solden, Austria.

That area of German (Bayern) is just incredible. The people, the food, the culture. So many things to see and do down in that area.

Vick, I like all the places you mention... I haven't been to Disney World yet though. But my son is only 4 months old, so I think it's an inevitable destination for us.

Nice Topic EC

If you have any questions when you are ready for Disney please feel free to ask me

I've been going twice (or more) per year for a while now and have read all the books and websites - have a pretty good handle on the in's and out's of WDW

Vick, I now see how much of a kid at heart you must be, and oddly enough your avatar proves it. B)

We're a few years away from visiting WDW, and I hope we're both around when that day comes so I can hit you up for some good advice.

I don't think I'll ever run out of places to travel to. I've been to Europe. Loved Germany and Amsterdam. Want to go skiing in Switzerland and Austria one day. I've been to about 40 of the 50 US states. I love Canada but have never been to western Canada. I have to hit one of those shows in Vancouver one day. I've been to just about all the Carribean islands and having worked there on and off for 3 years I don't have much desire to go back. I would really like to go to Italy, Poland, Japan, and Thailand. Those are on my wish list for some day.

Last year I did something I always wanted to do, a US tour hooking up with people I knew in each city I went to. Started in January by going to Toronto for a Pens-Leafs game with a buddy of mine in Toronto and hung out with the Python guys the next day. Went to New Orleans (I agree with Vick, One of my favorite cities) for the crawfish boil at MikeAI's house. Went out to Indianapolis and hooked up with some friends out there and played golf at the brickyard. When football season rolled around I headed back to New Orleans and went to the Saints-Steelers game with MikeAI. (another great weekend by the way) Next, I headed to Baltimore for the Steelers-Ravens game and hooked up with Vick for dinner the night before. I also hit the shows as well but nothing compares to just going somewhere and hanging out with a few good friends for a couple of days. :)

Hmm, I think travel for pleasure and travel for business are totally different, luckily sometimes you can combine the two.

I've been to France, Switzerland and West Germany (back when there were still two Germanies), Canada, Mexico, quite a few places in the Caribbean, and a lot of US states.

Switzerland is a favorite... I really like Curacao and St Maarten as well... I love Vancouver -- and Brad's right, King Pacific Lodge totally rocks, it's incredible as a destination. In the states, Key West is so relaxing you can't help but like it there, and San Diego is really pleasant too. Vegas has some awesome restaurants, even if I didn't gamble I'd still go there just to eat at Picasso. New Orleans is another place with some majorly great food, even tho the weather most of the year drives me nuts.

My little itch at the moment so to speak is to go to Cuba and to take some time off and hang out in Asia/Pacific Rim for maybe a month.

Places I don't particularly care for would include Cancun and Aruba -- way too Americanized for me.

I've travelled to 26 countries in total. Spent about one year of the last five years overseas backpacking here and there. I travel very cheaply and can get by on around US$75-$80 a day, including accommodation. I hate hotels and only stay there if I really have to. I much prefer the atmosphere in youth hostels, especially those with a great party vibe. I travel alone and hostels are a great place to meet other travellers.

I'm a graduate of art college so I usually check out as many art galleries and museums as I can. It's amazing how much of an insight art can give you into a country's history and culture. Then I usually like checking out places of particular historical or architectural significance. I also love finding out of the way pubs and bars filled only with locals to try and get a feel for how the average person lives. I love to eat and I'm not fussy at all so I always enjoy exploring the local cuisines in different countries.

And then there's the local girls and the nightlife. :yowsa:

I used to be a travel agent and my dad was a travel agent for a large portion of my childhood so I've had th travel bug for a while. I've done 25 of the States - which considering I left at 19 isn't that bad ;) I've been throughout the eastern part of Canada, Mexico and Aruba.

When I was doing my studies I didn't have all that much money to travel and my husband's disablity makes it a bit difficult but I am doing my best. Since moving here I have been mostly exploring England and Wales as I want to know my adopted nation pretty well but have also been to Belgium and France a number of times. I have to admit to having developed a real love for Bruges.

Last week we went to Bath..the site of the old Roman spa's in the UK. I am still getting over the chest infection I picked up there but it was very nice anyway.

Here is a pic I took:

Recently, I tried a new approach. Goto a club armed

in the other.
Spot a girl you like, walk up and show her the

You either get lucky, or you dont, but saves

Love to travel.. my wife and I took 3 months off and drove at relaxed pace cross country in the US. From Vancouver, San Fran, LA to San Diego favorite spot along the way.. Northern California - Red Wood Forest. San Diego up to the Grande Canyon. Spent a week on the rim of the canyon horse back riding, helicoptor rides.. fun stuff. I wanted to head up to Colorado but my wife wouldn't go for it.. ended up cutting out across New Mexico and into Texas. Hung out in Dallas for awhile then down to South Padre Island via San Antonio and Austin.. hit Galveston and Houston on the way back up. Then on to Hot Springs Arkansas, St. Louis .. took a northern route back to North Carolina. Charlotte for awhile then down to the Georgia coast and back up through the mountains. Shot up to Virginia, DC and Pennsylvania.. I think we hit some part of about 20 states on the trip.

We have taken several smaller trips recently but we want to take another long trip sometime in the near future and hit the states we missed.. She thought she had died and gone to heaven the year we went cross country. She hit almost half the states in addition to the UK, France, and Canada. I tried to talk her into going to Mexico when we where in San Diego but she wasn't interested.

My Dad was in the military so my brother and sister got to travel a lot. They live in Austrailia, Japan, Germany, and a heck of a lot of different states. My folks had me and dropped me off in Texas for most of my life.

Worse place I've ever been? Hot Springs, Arkansas. My wife loved the spa treatment but I didn't. I got felt up by the big male masseuse. I still have nightmares.

Best place I've ever been? North California.. Those trees are excellent. Walking down a black sand beach with the rocks off the coast, monster trees in the background and wild elk just hanging out. Very cool.

Favorite moment on a trip.. Driving down the PCH with the top down.. heading south. My wife is on the passengers side and wants to pull over. She looses her breakfast. The combination of convertible, high speed, and no guard rails between her and the several hundred foot drop to the ocean was more than she could bare.

austria
italy

monaco
spain
luxembourg
russia
finland
sweden
belgium
and probably some i am forgetting. i love to travel! thats what life is about for me... "experiences" - new places, new people, new foods, new cultures. i will never stop travelling. i grew up in a town in Alaska where even to this day, most people i went to school with have still never been more than 100 miles from their house. it just seems so sick and wrong to me. i have relatives whos biggest event in the week is driving 5 miles to the grocery store to buy food. its really bizarre.

on my list are:

Iceland
Greece
China (Shanghai looks kinda interesting)
Hong Kong
Japan
Egypt

WTF is up with that?
Its true. It's not an excuse.

Complimenting a girl too much when you first meet her puts her in a position where she knows she is above you. If she knows she OWNS you, you are screwed.

yes, you gotta compliment her to death and kill her with your intelligence for a balanced attack

always works for me!

I am more of a tropical island girl but I do love the mountains. The King Pacific Resort looks like something I’d enjoy. I prefer quiet and wilderness, few people and more natural settings. I loved the Adirondacks when I lived there. Alaska is defiantly on my list. I’m buying land off the coast of Panama which is really tropical but that’s partly due to the tax advantages and retirement discounts that offer. I’m not retiring yet but I will one day.

I love all the islands, West Indies, Netherlands Antilles, all of them.

I want to plan a trip next year and thinking about Figi Islands but my girlfriend wants to go to Thailand. JR can you tell me if you’ve been to Figi and how it compares to Thailand? When you were there where did you stay? Can you recommend anything? We like mountains and water. She climbs. Nothing too busy.

Also I there anyone here who has been to Alaska and knows of a company that rents cabins in the wilderness? There are places online but I’d like to know about one that someone actual recommends.

My son and brother went 5 years ago and rented an RV for 10 days. My brother travels extensively (the benefits of being single for 36 years and working for a company who flew him around 1-2 times a week where he accrued FF miles AND getting 4-6 vacation weeks a year, hehehe) and STILL says it was the best trip he's been on. My son LOVED it also and both want to go back. That's on my list of places to go, but I don't want to go by myself - we need to put together a webmaster trip there. :)

MissEve lives there so hopefully she'll pop in and give some ideas of places to stay and see.

Peaches thank you. I use to own a 33 foot motor home, really nice and tarded it for the park model I have in Key Largo. I really miss it. It certainly is an option but I think for Alaska I'd prefer a nice cabin by a stream where I can fish and build fires right outside my door.

Instead of getting another motor home I would seriously consider a nice houseboat. Florida is a great place to have a houseboat because we have all these waterways that can get you from one side to the other. I'm only a few minutes from the Caloosahatchee River which goes from Atlantic to the Gulf, big ass boats go through there. Once over in the Gulf there are hundreds of islands and places to go. Houseboats are really a lot of fun. Any of you Tampa boys, Mike, Sharky- should think about renting on and crusing the coast.

Americans are allowed to travel to Cuba now?
Americans don't have a problem traveling to Cuba. The problem comes in the fact that without clearance from the state department you just aren't allowed to spend any money.

It's a very workable situation if you think about it, BT from TCG just went a month or two ago.

Do you know if he flew there directly from the USA or if he had to arrive by way of Canada or a Caribbean country?
*edit: or Mexico?

Dianna,

If you ever decide to come up get in touch with me and I will give you all the info :) This is my favorite place to stay http://www.trcabins.com
its not super remote but its close to fishing in every direction, salmon in the river or the ocean and clamming! :)

It is eerily silent there, I sleep sooooo good! The cabins are beautiful log cabins with modern amenities and the people who own the cabins are great hosts. Only 100 bucks a night!

MsEve thank you. It looks great. I will definately look into it. No way I'm going in the winter but maybe next summer. When is the best time to go when it's sunny but still cool?

The cabins look great.

Next summer I plan on living in Vancouver. Also going to take a trip up to Alaska, maybe take a cruise up. KC offered his "special" twin bed.

Red flags and lights at CSIS just went off.

I think I hear a siren in the distance too. :D
