WASHINGTON — The much-discussed, often re-played smooch between Britney Spears (search) and Madonna (search) at the MTV Video Music Awards was the Material Girl's idea, according to Spears.

But the kiss -- Spears' first girl-on-girl action -- wasn't rehearsed. The pop princess told Billy Bush of "Access Hollywood" that the idea came up in rehearsal, but was still a spontaneous moment on stage.

"[Madonna's] ...threw it around a couple of times in rehearsals, but she just kind of said, 'You know, do what you feel, you know, in the performance . . . just go with it and see what happens,'" Spears said. "And that's what happened

Pop star Britney Spears is moving on from her kiss-off with Madonna to a kickoff with the NFL.

The singer -- who raised eyebrows last week with her controversial MTV Video Music Awards opening number a week ago -- will be joined by Mary J. Blige, Aerosmith and Aretha Franklin for a concert before the season's first game between the Washington Redskins and the New York Jets Thursday night.

Concert-goers shouldn't expect a repeat performance from Spears Thursday night with either Blige or Franklin.

The singer told CNN in an interview Thursday that it was the first time she kissed another woman and "would not do it" again -- except "maybe with Madonna."

"Well, my mom liked it actually. I was really kind of nervous! I was like, `Oh my God, my mom ... she's going to see this!'" Spears told Billy Bush in an interview on "Access Hollywood." Excerpts from Thursday night's show were released in advance.

Spears said she had butterflies before the smooch on the Aug. 28 awards show in New York City.

"Oh I was very nervous and very shy," she said. "Like honestly, just being with Madonna, she has this presence about her. ... I mean I'm a shy person in general, but I got very intimidated and I was like, not myself. I was not the confident Britney, you know?


"But no, she liked it! And my dad, weirdly enough, he thought it was fine, too. I mean, come on ... it's Madonna. If you can kiss any girl in the world, that has to be her."

No, I don't start high school until next year.

Actually, I was only joking about calling her an old lady. But I really do think she looks better now than she ever has. I never really thought she was very attractive, but she's improving with age.

You have to respect Madonna's marketing ability

Since the early 80's (think of all the fashion trends Madonna inspired with her early videos) Madonna has manipulated the media and the public

I take my cone shaped bra off to Madonna's incredible marketing abilities, look at all the press Spears has gotten from one 2 second kiss - but we haven't heard Madonna's side of the story ........ yet


p.s. - did you see Spears on the Kick Off Special last night, little chunky in those pants - not that I wouldn't but she looked so much better in the Super Bowl show a few years ago
