Excellent statistics research including do preseason records matter? (http://www.twominutewarning.com/g22.htm)

You might think preseason records don't count for much but

Also makes a compelling argument (scroll down page)

Does that mean we have to consider the Arizona Cardinals this season???

I've always guessed that there should be a slight correlation which seems to be true.

We never have to consider the Arizona Cardinals to be a contender for anything but the #6 draft pick. They have an amazing record of mediocrity.

If there is an antichrist, Arizona Big Dead owner Billy Bidwell is it.

For a while in the mid-70s the Cardinals were one, maybe two players away from going all the way (give Jim Hart Roger half of Stauback's receivers and America's Team would be known even more for its Cheerleaders); and the darkest day of the year, year-in, year-out, for a Cardinals football fan was draft day - although the day they announced they were hiring Bud Fucking Wilkinson as a replacement for Don Coryel was pretty fucking close.

By the time they left town they were giving away tickets left and right to make it look like they sold 40,000, and the call-in shows ran 5-1 between people willing to go and help them pack compared to those who were sorry to see them go.

St. Louis sports fans are pretty rough ... they'll root for a losing team that tries, but they are merciless when it comes to incompetence. A lot of folks were kind of worried about getting the Rams ... Georgia Frontiere has a reputation that made a lot of people wonder if we weren't getting another Billy Bidwell. Glad it didn't turn out that way, but after winning the first five games they played as the St. Louis Rams they flat-out sucked for four seasons.

The Rooney's have owned the Steelers since they started in the 1940's. The players love them because they treat them right. I met Art Rooney, Sr once and it was like talking to your grandfather. He loved football, but more importantly he loved his players like they were his sons. He passed that down to his kids and I think that's why the Steelers have been so successful over the years. The players love playing here. Once a Steeler always a Steeler. Very few teams have that loyalty. Green Bay is the only other team I can think of that has that kind of loyalty. Point is, it all starts with the ownership.

2 words for ya PD about that era St. Louis Cardinals
Conrad Dobler

"One game, I knocked the crap out of Merlin Olsen. If you wanted to see it on instant replay, you had to go to the kitchen because I knocked him so far out of the TV frame. After the game, he says, "One of these days, someone's going to break Dobler's neck, and I'm not going to send any flowers." What happens? He gets the $500,000 FTD commercial, and I don't get shit. He goes to the Pro Bowl fourteen times. He's in the Hall of Fame. He's probably got more money than God. When he was doing Father Murphy on NBC, he had a graveyard scene. One of the tombs said: CONRAD DOBLER. GONE, BUT NOT FORGIVEN. It's been twenty years since I played him, and I'm still on his fucking mind. And I like that. "

I am a football widow to a die-hard Charger's fan - even in their almost o-fer season...

Chargers 24 - 49ers 3 (pre-season game last night)

Do you REALLY think this predicts ANYTHING for the Chargers' future this season - or any season? It only predicts that sometimes small dreams come true... it's gonna be another season at our house of "they're gonna do it this year... it's gonna happen.. just watch... it's coming... they'll win..."

*sigh* Thank goodness I'm a Steelers' fan or this house would have no reason to celebrate during the season...
