I was trying to buy chips in Internet Casino
(Paradise Poker) and got this:

Your chip purchase was declined by your credit card issuer, most
likely for one of these reasons:

Paradise chip purchases are treated as 'gaming' purchases and some
credit card issuers do not authorize these purchases.
Try another card or set up your bank account directly.

so.........banks CAN stop Credit Card purchases ONLINE when they want it.

Nice and dandy,
but...

1) what if they treat ADULT SITES purchases in the same way?

2) why don't they?

anybody has a "Plan B" when and if they extend the practice to adult sites?

Do you want to complain to your CC providor about not being able to use your card as you want?

There is a lot of porn buyers who want to buy... I predict a bashlash from CC holders against these sort of "lazy" blanket fraud protection measures.

*edit.. an IMPA type group to promote a class action to prevent VISA/MC restraining trade at the storefront level is another prediction...

a class action of lots of "little people" rather than a billing company behind it would have a lot more public/political support too... Visa is ripe to be bitch slapped into place. (I hope)

actually,
at PartyPoker.com they are one step ahead of the game thanks to.....................

Transaction Unsuccessful

We are unable to process your credit card as your bank does not allow online gaming transactions. However, you can use your credit card to get an ePassporte Virtual Visa Card which will allow you to deposit money at our site.

It is simple and takes only 5 minutes to open a Virtual Visa account. Further, you can obtain a Visa Electron Card in addition to Virtual Visa. This Visa Electron Card allows you to withdraw cash from most ATM Machines.

Yea, I've started seeing Epassporte on a number of gambling sites, if your going to play online regularly, I also might recommend getting a firepay acct. since Most gambling sites are set up with them...

However, there's still lots of cards out there that will let you buy direct... I cancelled a card that wouldn't and found another that does... Just because I didn't want the bank telling me what I can buy!

i am looking at it for a number of applications ... its a brilliant product but still in its baby stages - just like paypal was for the first year or 2 until enough people had accounts to make it a business necessity.

ePassporte has bigger potential than that as it picks up the market that the cc's are trying to block.

time will tell, looking forward to seeing where its at 6 and 12 months from now!

Gaming transactions have been blocked by some banks for nearly 2 years now, they simply do it by BIN and MCC code.

Any type of transaction could be blocked in this manner, either by issuing banks or by the card association...

Who's Randy?

Yup... I've found that my bank debit/check card that is supposed to "act like a VISA" actually works more frequently and more efficiently online than the real VISA or AMEX. I've never had a problem using it but can count many times that I've faced multiple obstacles with other cards.
