Australia Captures Fish Poachers After 21-Day Chase, Govt Says
Aug. 28 (Bloomberg) -- Australian Customs officers arrested the crew of a boat suspected of poaching Patagonian toothfish in Antarctic waters after a 21-day, 6,275-kilometer (3,900-mile) chase, the government said.

The Uruguayan-registered Viarsa was spotted allegedly hunting the rare fish between Heard Island and the McDonald Islands, about 4,500 kilometers southwest of the Australian coast, on Aug. 7, Australian Fisheries Minister Ian Macdonald said in a statement.

The load was reportedly worth $5million but I suspect Australian authorities were so keen to secure it in an attempt to rip off the tooth fairy. :)

They are ancient animals that live at incredible depths and come to the waters between NZ and Australia to breed... they commenced fishing them less than 10 years as shallower feeding fish became scarce..

The patgonian tooth fish was almost unknown to people 10 years ago... now it is virtually extinct..

Japanese, Indonesian and Taiwanese fishing boats come and clean them out when breeding in protected areas.. If they are not stopped right now the fish will be extinct in a very short time.

*oops think they breed south of Western australia now I think about it.. google will know if you really care ;)

I've been wondering myself what's the big deal with that fish.. it's an ugly thing, but it must taste great :yowsa:
