Both

Some people are born with a higher intelligence quota while other work smarter and harder to make more of what they were born with

I say both too.

Studies of twins separated at birth show high heritability of IQ (quite a bit greater than parental social influence in at least some of the studies). Now whether one wants to go all the way and assume that IQ is equivalent to what we call intelligence is a good debate in and of itself.

Most people preceive that some kids just "get it" from a young age compared to other children which doesn't mean some kids can't hit the high end of their bell curve. (?).

Some people are just INTERESTED in learning. Genetically influenced? Certainly a benefit for whatever benefits knowledge provides (mnemonic tricks, learning paradigms) on any test that would purport to measure such things.

IQ is the intelligence potential.

Long story but short version is on high school paper one day, for some reason I forget at the moment, news paper editor guy had a meeting, and during it he told everyone's IQs. (He had access to them.)

Same editor guy was smartest guy in school with many many awards ands scholarships (and also lacked in many social skills). He had the lowest IQ in the room of 25 students. He applied himself more (and his parents made him), ergo, brilliant, honors student, awards, but the lack of social skills.

So you can have a large IQ and not go your full potential. Or you can have a smaller one and work it (again, something must give if you do) to it's fullest.

So yeah, they are born with the potential. How much of it will they use of it (and at what lost in other ways) is the question.

I have a brother who is so far past the genius level that it's scary. He just recently left Duke where he was getting some sort of post doctorate degree at Duke - and getting paid for it. He studies, but he LOVES to learn, so it's not work to him.

My sister always wanted to be like him - in the gifted classes, top of everything, etc. But she's not smart. However, she tried harder than ANYONE else I've ever seen and was recently one of just TWO people that was picked to have a paid internship at IBM.

I'm good at reading and writing but horrible at math. My ex was GREAT at math, OK in reading and writing. My son is GREAT in math and OK in reading and writing, yet I raised him alone and he never had a days worth of "math influence" from his father.

I think you're born with a certain level of "smartness". It's also what you DO with it that makes a difference.

Reading some of the new threads here it is obvious that some are born more intelligent that others and some show/use MUCH LESS intelligence that others and some have less intelligence than others

I think there are different levels of intelligence...

I always considered myself book smart but logic dumb...

While I'm eligible for mensa, I'm also probably going to earn myself a darwin award...

one of my many near death experiences was a near drowing in a jacuzzi when my hair (back when I had the really long hair) got stuck in the drain when I was trying to retrieve a ring that fell off...

I see a "do not touch" sign and yet something compels me to touch it.

I made the honor roll in high school, but also nearly darwinized myself with the combination of an icy sidewalk,a metal bar and an urge to run and jump over the bar....am totally amazed I am able to have children after that.....

In another thread I remarked tonight that I am a firm believer "that all men are created equal" - which has caused me to speculat on what fucking planet some recent posters have arrived on earth from.
